Then write into the chart if the following statements are True (T) or False (F). 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 British People and Foreign Languages Martin Last year, I was on holiday in Argentina, and I saw British tourists: they were not even able to say “hello”, “please” or “thank you” in Spanish, the local language. I was embarrassed. I think most native English speakers are lazy. Why? Because they do not need to learn another language: most people around the world are able to speak at least a bit of English. I’m not very good at languages (I can get by in Spanish, French and Italian; I’m not fluent in any of them), but I think it’s important to make an effort when you’re travelling abroad. Liz I hated languages at school, but as an adult it’s all different. Two years ago I started learning French just as a hobby – I don’t need it at work – , and six months ago I started learning Hindi because my boyfriend is from India and next month I’m going over there to meet some of his family. It’s difficult, but also really interesting. Paul At school, I’m studying two foreign languages, Spanish and French. They’re not my favourite subjects, but sometimes they can be quite fun, like when we learn slang words, or music and sport vocabulary. But I can’t get my head round all those grammar rules. When I went to Spain on holiday last month I was able to ask for drinks and I also understood a little bit of Spanish TV. Louise I teach French and Spanish at a school in London, so obviously I’m fluent in both languages. I like my job, although sometimes it can be a bit frustrating. It would be good if the students cared more about foreign languages: lots of business companies want people who can speak European languages. But young people don’t seem to realize that speaking another language can improve their job prospects. adapted from Macmillan website 1. Martin can’t speak any French. 2. According to Martin, trying to speak in the local language when travelling abroad is essential. 3. Liz didn’t like studying languages when she was a student. 4. Liz is learning French to help her with her job. 5. Languages are the subjects Paul likes the most. 6. Paul enjoys some aspects of his language lessons at school. 7. According to Louise, foreign languages are interesting but not useful. 8. Louise thinks her students love learning foreign languages. ____/ 16 pts Page 2 / 9 Anglais série 2, 2011 Gestionnaire du commerce de détail CFC Exercise 2 Complete the gaps 1 to 10 in the sales dialogue between a shop assistant (SA) and a customer (C) with one of the expressions A to L. Then choose the correct sentence from questions 1 to 8. There is only one correct sentence for each question. Report the letters into the chart. TWILIGHT, a Hot-Blooded Romance Fourteen agents told Stephenie Meyer that Twilight, the young-adult vampire-romance novel she wrote in 2003, was not right for the market and rejected it. However, once it was finally published in 2005, it became an instant bestseller. That same year, Twilight was named Best Children's Book of the Year. It was also the biggest selling book of 2008 all over the world. What makes Twilight so successful? The exciting mixture of romance and horror. Bella and Edward are two deeply romantic heroes. Bella, a beautiful shy adolescent moves from sunny Phoenix to rainy Forks in Washington State to live with her father, while her mother travels with her new husband. She finds her life in danger when she is irresistibly attracted to the enigmatic Edward, one of her new classmates. After initially avoiding her, he saves her life in the school parking lot. However, Edward is a vampire, a predator, who finds the smell of Bella's blood desirable. He must fight his instincts and resist drinking her blood because it would kill her. At the end of the book, Bella expresses her desire to become a vampire, but Edward refuses. S. Meyer says that the idea for Twilight came to her in a dream one night in June. She wrote down her dream and in three months transformed it into a completed novel. She didn't intend to publish what she wrote. However, she showed it to her sister who was so enthusiastic that she sent it to literary agencies. S. Meyers has said that the apple on the cover of the book represents the forbidden fruit from the Book of Genesis in the Bible. It symbolizes Bella and Edward's love. The film was a great success and it works because it treats this fantastical story in a refreshingly natural way. It's smart, likable and often quite funny, although many say that the book is more exciting. The choice of actors is terrific: Kristen Stewart as Bella gives her best performance of the year. On screen she is a real teenager, pensive and intelligent. And Robert Pattinson, a British actor who acted in one of the Harry Potter movies, is more than up to his job as the impossibly perfect vampire. He manages to find both humour and passion in his situation. Example 0.
