It includes an introduction to function, curve sketching, elementary theory of equations, sequences and series, matrix algebra and systems of equations, linear, polynomial, logarithmic, exponential, inverse and composite functions, variation, and systems of equations. Lecture hours per week (4 :45). Prerequisite(s): Qualifying score on the ERAU Mathematics Placement Examination or MATH 106. Blended Format: This course is offered in blended format. 70% of the required course will be conducted in-class. 30% will take place online in Blackboard. Class meetings will be comprised of lectures, audiovisual presentations, discussions, exercises, and student presentations. Online activities will include discussion with classmates, posting of your work, reviewing classmates’ work, and feedback from the instructor on your work. During the first class meeting, we will thoroughly review the online Blended Course activities. 1 Course Goals: This course is designed to provide students with mathematical skills to support further work in calculus as required in Aviation Computer Science, Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics, and other degree programs. Learning Outcomes: Alignment with departmental program outcomes is indicated in parentheses. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to do the following: 1. Use basic properties of fractional and integer exponents and radicals to simplify algebraic expressions including expanding and factoring polynomial expressions and performing arithmetic operations on algebraic fractions, exponentials and logarithms. (PO 1 & 7) 2. Solve linear, quadratic, and factorable higher degree polynomial equations. (PO 1 & 7) 3. Use the properties of logarithms and exponentials to change forms and solve logarithmic and exponential equations. (PO 1 & 7) 4. Solve linear systems in two and three variables using substitution, elimination and Gaussian methods. (PO 1 & 7) 5. Solve linear and factorable algebraic inequalities. (PO 1 & 7) 6. Calculate slopes, determine the equation of any straight line and graph the line determined by any linear function. (PO 1 & 7) 7. Determine the domain and range of elementary, logarithmic and exponential functions, including graphically-defined functions. Identify and graph linear, quadratic, logarithmic, and exponential equations. (PO 1 & 7) 8. Recognize and evaluate composite functions and calculate and verify inverses of functions. (PO 1 & 7) 9. Blackboard assignments (if required) are graded with class participation. This course includes weekly activities, each of which may have grade points associated with them. Unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor, students are expected to participate each week, according to the course schedule. This is especially important with regards to discussion activities. Weekly discussions typically include both an initial posting and one or more substantive replies. Note: Proper etiquette has to do with keeping it simple by using proper English and proper spelling – spell check works well in Blackboard. Eagle Vision (EV) Web-Conferencing Technology: Eagle Vision is a web video conferencing platform, powered by Saba Centra, that provides a real time collaborative environment with tools such as white board, application sharing, polling, and voice over the internet (VOIP). This platform provides capacity for live virtual classrooms (synchronous learning), meetings, training, and conferences as well as recording and playback capabilities. Students are expected to come to class with the proper required equipment for an Eagle Vision Home class (headset and camera). Students not in compliance with equipment requirements will be automatically withdrawn at the second class meeting. If this is your first Eagle Vision Home class then you must do an EV pre-flight check ride before the first class meeting. To obtain the dates and times for pre-flight check rides go to ERNIE>INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY>EAGLE VISION>STUDENTS and then click on the pre-flight check ride link. Students will attend class in a designated area where there are no distractions (TV, kids, phones, etc.). All classes are recorded and available for playback. Students aren’t permitted to purposely skip classes & watch the playback. Text chat is part of the recording and there is an expectation of academic decorum when chatting. Students and faculty using Eagle Vision Home modality must not use any Embry-Riddle classroom resources. Each student and faculty will use his/her own computer & internet service provider (ISP).
