A Word from Our President
Over this past year, we faithfully pursued our
mission and have collaborated with many
partners and experts to improve the fate of
children, who have no voice within the political
arena. It is unacceptable that millions of
deprived children suffer around the world each
year. Even in a prosperous country like Canada,
one child out of every ten still lives in poverty, a
situation which entails serious consequences
for our children’s future and the future of our
country. According to the Ministry of Health and
Social Services of Quebec, growing up in a poor
family has dire consequences on the health and
the development of individuals during childhood,
but the harmful repercussions are also felt
during adulthood.
Young people living in low-income families
face the risks of poor developmental outcomes
in their health, behaviour, learning and
socialization. It is therefore our collective
responsibility to prevent child poverty and the
innumerable problems it can lead to.
It is through the intervention of community
organizations such as Children Now,
that we can help to prevent the devastating
effects of poverty and restore children’s
chances of success. We organize recreational
activities, which were specifically designed
for underprivileged kids who do not have
access to the leisurely pursuits favourable
to their social, intellectual, physical and
emotional development.
It is therefore thanks to the generous
contribution of our precious donors and
sponsors that we were able to bring joy and
hope to close to 1800 underprivileged children
in Montreal and Quebec greater areas. Some
70 youngsters enjoyed the wonders of winter
during the Snow Camps, our Easter Parties
delighted another 700 little ones, we brightened
up the summer of over 200 disadvantaged kids
via our four Summer Camps, 120 youngsters
participated at Ecological and Prevention Day
and finally, more than 700 children were able
to attend our fabulous Christmas Shows over
the holidays.
CHILDREN NOW also offered a free counselling
and referral service by providing assistance
and resources to support individuals dealing
with separation/divorce or other family
conflicts. We lent an attentive ear as well as
free legal information to family members
in distress, whether they are children,
adolescents, parents or grandparents. This
service provided favourable results for those in
need, as well as essential communication and
problem‑resolution tools.
In November 2011, we launched a preventive
program of education and awareness against
street gangs. The “Say NO to Gangs” campaign
aims to develop a collective commitment to
educate young people, parents and other
community stakeholders to face serious
destructive phenomena which includes
bullying and gangs as well as violence against
children. The more we know about this social
phenomenon, the more we will be able to
prevent it. This campaign will help to raise
awareness of parents and educators to better
support children.
Our Youth Program also continued to support
teenagers by offering them the opportunity to
have a first work experience and to acquire
skills which will be useful for them in their
future career.
I want to truly thank our Board of Directors, our
volunteers, our donors, our sponsors and our
employees, for their loyal support. With your
help and your generosity, we are able to improve
the quality of life for many children. Thank you
so very much!

Our Mission and Initiatives
Everything for the Love of Our Children!
Description of Our Logo
CHILDREN NOW is a registered charitable
The CHILDREN NOW logo
organization whose goal is to advance the
cause of the family in our society. In order to
achieve this, we look at a number of phenomena
including divorce, poverty, delinquency, school
drop-outs, street gangs, environment, health
and family mediation, to name a few.
is very inspiring. We see
the hands of children of
different cultures holding
the Earth. It signifies how
important children are for
our society and everywhere
around the world. We must
provide children with the
best conditions possible to
grow and prosper. The logo
shows an earth that is blue
and green which points to
the sustainable and healthy
environment that we need
for our youth. All of this is
completed with bright and
attractive colors.
One of our objectives is to educate the public by
offering seminars and workshops on themes
related to the well-being of children and the
family with family and community experts.
We provide the necessary advice and support to
individuals in distress through a free telephone
helpline. Children Now offers children and young
people in difficulty, as well as everyone in the
family in distress, the necessary assistance and
resources to overcome barriers specific to their
own situation through a free telephone helpline.
We help to solve all kinds of problems in an
attempt to prevent their consequences: drug
addiction, alcoholism, psychological or physical
disorders, domestic violence, separation,
divorce, legal rights and obligations, suicide, and
many others.
Our free telephone helpline offers
underprivileged individuals access to free legal
information services. Our professionals advise
and direct these individuals to the appropriate
services Legal information for low-income
parents and children is also available free of
charge so that they may be better informed on
their rights and obligations.
CHILDREN NOW also developed an educational
program for primary and secondary school
students to encourage parents and teachers to
sensitize children about street gangs, including
bullying, intimidation and all other forms of
violence experienced by the youth of today. This
initiative also provides a partnership program
which gives businesses the opportunity to
sponsor a classroom or a entire school.
We also organize activities for underprivileged
children since they rarely have the opportunity
to participate in cultural activities which
are essential for their social, emotional and
psychological development. These activities
provide a number of benefits for underprivileged
children and allow them to hope for a better
future: they reduce stress and anxiety, help
develop self esteem, increase creativity and
academic performance, promote better
interaction with peers and help develop
social skills. Furthermore, the activities allow
children to experience happiness in the short
term, but the activities also provide long term
benefits. Thanks to the benevolence of our
donors and sponsors, we can bring to life these
extraordinary events which enrich the lives of so
many children, pursue our mission and offer our
services free of charge.
These activities include: the Easter Party
for preschoolers (prekindergarten and
kindergarten), the Christmas Show for
1st, 2nd and 3rd grade children, Ecological and
Prevention Day for 4th grade children and finally
a Summer Camp for children who are in the
5th and 6th grades.
The mission of Children Now is to
help children – the most deprived and
under‑represented persons of our society – to
express themselves. Our objective is to make
these voices heard by everyone so that their
well-being becomes an uncontested priority by
the entire universal community. Our duty to our
children and ourselves, is to make a difference
in their life.

Did You Know That...
Facts and Figures on Impoverished
Children in Canada
• Despite the Parliament’s unanimous
resolution in 1989 to eliminate poverty among
Canadian children by the year 2000, recent
reports show that 760,000 children – almost
one child out of every nine – still live in
poverty today. (2011 Report Card on Child and
Family Poverty in Canada, Campaign 2000)
• Almost one in two Aboriginal Children (49%)
under the age of six lives in a low income
family, and nearly one out of every two
(49%) children living in a family that recently
immigrated to Canada (1996 – 2001) lives in
poverty (2011 Report Card on Child and Family
Poverty in Canada, Campaign 2000). Single
parents and people with disabilities who have
children are also at higher risk of being poor.
• A recent study found 39% of Canadians
believe they are only one to two pay cheques
away from living in poverty. (Ready for
Leadership, by T. Hennessy and A. Yalnizyan)
• HungerCount 2011 reports that
704,414 individuals turn to food banks in an
average month, and that more than a third
of them are children. During the month of
March 2011 alone, food banks served a total
of 3,091,777 meals, a 32% increase since
2007, though the number of meal programs
counted has not changed significantly. (Food
Banks Canada)
• To live in poverty in Canada is to be at
much greater risk of poor health, violence
and a shorter lifespan. It is to be unable to
participate fully in one’s community and
greater society, and it is to suffer great
depths of anxiety and emotional pain.
(Canada Without Poverty)
• Children’s involvement in cultural and
recreational activities helps them build
healthy bodies and acquire valuable skills,
and can also protect them from emotional
and social problems. However, about 80%
of children from low-income families rarely
participate in these types of community
programs. (Income and Child Well-being:
A new perspective on the poverty debate,
by David P. Ross and Paul Roberts)
• The impact and cost of poverty is not
borne by the poor alone, though the poor
bear the brunt of it. There is an impact
on and cost to society as a whole: greater
demands on the health care and criminal
justice systems; diminished workplace and
economic productivity; and unnecessary,
harmful divisions in society based on
economic status. In dollar terms, one recent
estimate of the cost of poverty, by the Ontario
Association of Food Banks, placed that of
Ontario alone at $32 to $38 billion – annually.
(Canada Without Poverty)
• The rate of low-income individuals
(after income tax) in Quebec is 12%, or
900,000 people. In fact, 60% of low-income
Quebecers are persistently in this situation
(at least three of the four previous years).
In average, they live in a family unit whose
income is 28.5% lower than the poverty
threshold. In Quebec, children represent 15%
of the low‑income population and almost one
in every three (27.8%) single-parent family
lives in poverty. (Données sociales du Québec,
2006, Institut de la statistique du Québec)
4
• In 2011, 42% of food banks in Canada saw
an increase in the number of people they
assisted. From the 18 known food banks
in Quebec, more than 156,000 people
were helped, which represents 23.3% of
the Canadian portion. From this number,
35.7% were children. (HungerCount 2011,
Food Banks Canada)
• In 2005, Quebec had 15,423 divorces for
21,793 marriages, which equals seven
divorces for each 10 marriages. The total
divorce rate, an approximation of the
proportion of marriages that end in divorce,
was of 51.9 for 100 marriages, which reveals
that more than half of marriages fail. The
total divorce rate has hovered around 50% for
the past ten years. (Portrait social du Québec,
Institut de la statistique du Québec)
• The number of children affected by their
parents’ divorce was estimated at 14,300 in
2003, which is an average of 1.8 children per
divorce with a dependant child. The mother
obtains the guardianship of 59% of children,
the father 13%, and 20% of children are
subjected to shared custody. (La situation
démographique au Québec, Bilan 2006, Institut
de la statistique du Québec) Teenagers
with divorced parents can develop sexual
relationship problems, and are more prone
to consuming drugs than children from
intact families. In fact, 39% of girls and 50%
of boys with divorced parents increase their
drug consumption. (Le divorce et la séparation
affectent-ils vos enfants ?, Canal Vie)
• In Quebec, the percentage of low-income
individuals without a diploma is twice as high
as that of people with university diplomas:
12.3% compared with 5.3%, in average, from
1996 to 2006. (Données sociales du Québec,
2006, Institut de la statistique du Québec)
This statistic demonstrates the importance of
preventing school drop-outs in the province,
to consequently reduce the number of
Quebecers living in poverty.
• In 2000, 26% of young people in public high
school quit without a diploma. In 2011, this
number rose to 29%. In underprivileged
areas, the situation is even worse. If in a
rich neighbourhood of Montreal, only 6% of
teenagers drop out of school, the percentage
surpasses 40% in impoverished districts. The
consequences of this massive abandonment
of school seats can be dramatic, for the
teenagers themselves as much as for society
in general. A young person who has dropped
out runs much higher risks than one with
a diploma of living off social assistance,
having to accept a precarious job, or having
health problems. For the State as well,
costs of school drop-outs are excessive:
each dropped-out teen represents lower
tax revenues, a slower economic growth,
a shortage of skilled workers, and more
pressure on social programs. (Statistique
Canada – Le décrochage scolaire a augmenté
au Québec sous les libéraux, La Presse
canadienne, Monday, February 9, 2009 edition)

Programs for Youth
Provide Tools for Youth as
They Transition to High School
The 10/12 Prevention Program to ensure
a positive transition from elementary school
to high school
Children Now implemented the 10/12
Prevention Program, with the collaboration of
Youth Protection Services and social community
agents, to better prepare teenagers, aged 10 to
12, as they are about to transition to high school.
The program’s hour-long information sessions
are targeted at 5th and 6th graders, but are
also useful for teachers, school principals,
and counsellors.
On June 5th, 10th and 16th, two representatives
from Children Now presented this program in
three primary schools of Montreal: Hochelaga,
Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes and La Dauversière.
The 5th and 6th grade children who participated
at the information sessions are now better
equipped to protect themselves against the
negative influences of their neighbourhood and
school environment.
Numerous topics are approached with tact,
respect, and sensibility, such as cigarettes,
alcohol, drugs, delinquency, street gangs,
bullying, and sexuality. The students always
ask an impressive number of questions,
which demonstrates their interest in the
conveyed information and confirms this
program’s importance.
Children Now distributes the guide
A.D.O. : Guide pratique pour les jeunes to the
children who partake in this program and in
the other activities that we organize. The guide
gives children useful information and practical
solutions with entertaining games such as
crosswords, riddles and word search.
Each year, we offer this book free of charge to
more than 240 children of community centers
from Montreal and Quebec City. The A.D.O.
guide is available in bookstores, by contacting
Children Now by phone, or by visiting
its website.
The Youth Program to encourage youth
professional development
Children Now offers a program to students
aged 14 to 20, to help them develop their
professional skills by working in one of its
call centres in Montreal or Quebec City. Their
experience starts with a paid training and
is followed by a flexible work schedule to fit
their studies.
Although this youth program constitutes many
of these students’ first job in a professional
environment, they learn quickly and feel
rewarded by their contribution to their team’s
success as well as the achievement of personal
goals. They also have the opportunity to develop
new skills, adequately prepare for their future
career and directly contribute to improving the
situation of underprivileged children.

Help Line and Counselling Services
Listening to the Population
Many individuals in distress due to the breakup
of their family unit or other situations dealing
with family matters, turned to Children Now
for advice in 2011. Some of the problems we
worked on included: family mediation, support
payments, domestic violence, changing custody
arrangements, deprivation of parental authority,
visitation rights of grandparents, respect of
children’s will, discipline, delinquency, family
inheritance, parent who moves away, fear of
abuse, recognition of paternity, health and
safety of children, threats of suicide of a parent,
intervention by Youth Protection Services,
non compliance with a judgment, parental
alienation, drug addiction, and cancelling
an adoption.
court. The parents can go see a mediator who
will sit with them and work out a new custody
arrangement with the input of both parents.
(Please see more details on family mediation
below Case B.)
Examples of Actual Cases in 2011
Facts Mrs. L. has custody of her 13-year-old
son who visits his father every second weekend.
Mrs. L. and the father have been separated for
nine years. It seems that the son experiences a
number of difficulties when he is with the father.
The father has a new spouse and Mrs. L’s son
does not get along with her. According to Mrs. L.,
the new spouse will say negative things about
Mrs. L. to her son as well as screaming at him.
It also seems that Mrs. L.’s son does not do
his homework when he is with the father. Mrs.
L. gave her son a cellular phone but the father
takes the phone away from him when he is at
the father’s home. The father will use the son
to send messages to Mrs. L. – such as “Your
mother owes me $20.00.” Unfortunately, the
father has made it clear to Mrs. L. that he does
not want her to call at his house.
Case A
Fact s Mrs. C. has been separated for one year.
She has a daughter who is 8 years old. There is
a shared custody arrangement with the father
where the child is with one parent for one week
and then with the other parent for the other
week. The father is experiencing some mental
health issues and would like to change the
custody arrangement so that he can concentrate
on getting better. Mrs. C. agrees with the change
and wants to know how to go about this. She
also has a question regarding what needs are
covered by child support payments.
Qu esti ons How do we go about changing a
custody arrangement? What needs are covered
by child support payments?
answers There is a judgment that spelled out
the custody arrangement for Mrs. C.’s daughter,
therefore it is best that Mrs. C. and the father go
to mediation to have a new agreement drafted
and then get the agreement homologated by the
There are nine basic needs that are covered
by child support, these include: food, housing,
communications, housekeeping, personal
care, clothing, furniture, transportation and
recreation. Since Mrs. C. and the father will have
a different custody arrangement, the amount
of child support that was being paid will have
to be recalculated using the provincial child
support guidelines.

out. Children whose parents are separated
should not be used as “messengers” between
the parents since this creates uneasiness for
the children especially when the message is not
a very friendly one. Children love their parents
equally and are deeply disturbed by the never
ending conflicts between the parents. When
parents draw children into the conflict, it places
children in the unbearable position of choosing
one parent over the other – it is very stressful for
a child to experience such a conflict in loyalties.
of receiving free services from an accredited
mediator to negotiate and settle custody and
child support, among other things. Family
mediation provides numerous advantages.
For example, it encourages cooperation and
compromise and, consequently, a greater
respect for the reached agreements because of
the parties’ active participation in the process.
Long-term benefits include a decrease in
judicial proceedings, as well as a reduction of
the stress felt by the entire family.
For Mrs. L., there were a number of
suggestions that could help her situation.
First, it would be advisable to encourage the
father to communicate directly with Mrs. L.
and not involve the son at all. There are many
tools available nowadays that help parents
communicate either through various websites or
with parental planners (agendas).
Family mediation facilitates the peaceful
resolution of conflicts. Its strong point relies
upon the fact that the conflicting parties are
directly involved in the settlement process.
Hence, the individuals do not experience the
unpleasant feeling of having to submit to a
judgment rendered by a third party, and this, not
in the interest of a single individual, but of all
the individuals concerned by the problem. As a
result, all parties derive a greater satisfaction,
instead of being left with an impression of
loss. The mediator, by discouraging conflict,
gives center stage to the actual issues. Family
problems must be approached from a more
humane viewpoint, by worrying about the
well‑being of children and by not losing sight
of this aspect throughout the duration of the
mediation. Furthermore, the atmosphere of
cooperation that emerges from the process will
be beneficial when the time comes to review the
terms of the agreement, following a change in
the circumstances involving the parties.
Planners could be used to facilitate exchanges
between the parents so that they are both aware
of major events and tasks that need to be taken
care of. These planners could contain various
information including important appointments,
school calendar, homework, projects, tests,
expenses that need to be taken care of and/or
reimbursed, etc.
Another avenue that could be taken to deal with
this issue is to contact a mediator or a social
worker, psychologist or other professional that
would sit down with Mrs. L., the father and the
son in order to encourage alternative means of
expressing one’s needs and expectations.
Family Mediation
One of Children Now’s main objectives is to
encourage family mediation in situations such
as the one experienced by Mrs. C. In Quebec, a
law adopted in 1997 offers parents the possibility
In the case of Mrs. C., if mediation is successful
and the couple agrees on the amount of child
support, the mediator will prepare a summary
of the agreement. An agreement project will
then be drafted and judicial procedures will be
prepared so it can be accepted by the court.

Regional Activities
Expanding Our Knowledge
to Offer a Better Service
A child who suffers from
ADHD (attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder) has
difficulty waking up and
getting ready for school
in the morning. Once the
child arrives at school, he
lacks concentration and
has bad marks. He also has
disturbing behaviors, and
has difficult relations with
friends and the school staff.
In sports activities, there are
risky behaviors and injuries
during games. It is difficult
for the child to remain
seated during supper and to
be calm during the evening.
The bedtime routine is also
difficult and the child often
has sleeping disorders.
On January 20th, 2011, representatives from
Children Now attended an informative
meeting at the CLC of Laurier MacDonald
High School given by expert mediator
Dr. Dominic D’Abate.
Dr D’Abate spoke of the various stages of a
separation/divorce, the needs of children during
a separation and divorce and the need for
parents to develop a parenting plan. He spoke
of the advantages of mediation and the various
resources available to parents.
Conference hosted by the Barreau du Québec
Recent Developments in Family Law
Palais des Congrès de Montréal
September 16, 2011
Eminent jurists and other professionals
presented dynamic conferences on the recent
developments in family law in Quebec.
The presentation of Me Dominique Goubau
concerned the status of the significant
third party. Because there are many family
separations, there is more discussion
concerning the definition of the family and
thus the question of the significant third party
becomes more and more important.
For example, it is necessary to examine the
status of the step-father or the step-mother who
lives as the common law spouse with the parent
of the children during their cohabitation versus
their status when there is a break-up. During
cohabitation, the status of the step-parent is
embryonic because there is a temporary and
revocable delegation of parental rights. That is,
the biological parent is going to entrust the child
to his/her common law spouse when he/she is
temporarily absent, but as soon as the biological
parent returns, he/she resumes parental rights
on the child.
Dr. Leila Ben Amour, a child psychiatrist,
discussed anxiety disorders and shared custody.
She explained that one in ten children presents
problems of attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD). Furthermore, in 80% of the
cases, the problem continues into adolescence
and in 60% of the cases, the problem is still
present when the person becomes an adult.
ADHD includes inattention, hyperactivity and
impulsivity. A child who suffers from ADHD does
not pay attention to details, often does not seem
to listen when we speak to him, loses objects
that are necessary for his tasks or activities,
often forgets the daily routine, gets up when
he has to sit, etc. In this kind of situation, it is
essential that separated or divorced parents
cooperate even more so than usual when
dealing with the rules which must be followed
since the routine must, as much as possible, be
similar in the two homes.
Me Violaine Belzile presented the doctrine of
unjust enrichment and common law spouses.
Quebec is the only province in Canada where
there is no obligation of support for de facto
spouses who separate. The theory of the
enrichment without cause is often the only
option available to restore, in certain conditions,
the balance that has been broken at the end of
a de facto relationship. Articles 1493 to 1496 of
the Civil Code of Quebec set out the rules and
conditions which apply to unjust enrichment.
It is necessary to prove an enrichment of a
spouse, an impoverishment of the other person,
a link of causality between the enrichment and
the impoverishment and an absence of legal
justification of this state of affairs. An example of
unjust enrichment would include the case where
one of the spouses pays all the expenses of the
household while the other partner has a well
paying job and accumulates goods and savings.
Me Belzile explained the principles established
by the decision of the Supreme Court on Canada
Kerr v. Baranow (2011) 1 S.C.R. 269 concerning
unjust enrichment.

“Say NO to Gangs” Campaign
An Important Campaign to Fight Against
Violence, Bullying and Street Gangs
On November 4th, 2011, we launched the «Say
NO to gangs» campaign in the Guzzo Cinemas.
As in numerous countries, street gangs are
invading our cities, district by district until their
reign of terror destroys the social fiber. Their
number just continues to increase each day and
their recruitment process is targeting the most
vulnerable members of our society: our children.
The cycle of violence starts at the beginning of
life and schools are often the place of choice
where this cycle evolves. It starts with bullying
or vandalism and then progressively reaches a
destructive climate.
That is why on November 4th, 2011,
Children Now organized the launching
of a prevention program in schools with
the collaboration of Céline Dion and
Luciano Bentenuto.
The message was released in all Guzzo
Cinemas, as a video clip, before the start of
every movie for three months. It aimed at raising
awareness about the growing phenomenon that
is street gangs. The international gang expert,
Luciano Bentenuto reminded us that “Saying NO
to gangs is everybody’s business”.
Following the launching of the campaign,
1,500 children from 19 different schools
benefitted from the prevention program. They
received over 1,500 books on street gangs
and 55 Study Guides were distributed to help
teachers present the material to their students.

Activities for Children
Improving Children’s Situation
with Concrete Gestures
Poverty within a rich country is not the only paradox facing underprivileged children.
Their exclusion from recreational and educational activities favourable to their well-being
on a physical, psychological, social and moral level is alarming.
These ill-fated young people are the ones who need most to learn to live within a community,
to enjoy the escape brought by holidays and to feel valued.
Consequently, with the aim of improving the fate of these youngsters, Children Now developed
activities that allow them to learn while having fun.
In 2011, 1,790 children took part in our activities: Snow Festival, Easter Party, Summer Camp,
Ecological and Prevention Day and Christmas Show.
The generosity of donors, sponsors and volunteers has allowed these underprivileged kids
to benefit from moments of true happiness, auspicious to discovery and enchantment.
11
In 2011, 70 children experienced the magic of winter by attending the
Snow Festivals, organized by Children Now. From February 8 to 10,
35 students from Chanoine-Côté School in Quebec City took part in this
activity which was held at the Domaine Scout St-Louis-de-France. Then,
on February 16, 17 and 18, 35 students from the Montreal area went to
Camp Papillon in Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez. The children were delighted
by this break, which uplifted their spirits by allowing them to participate
in a series of exciting activities.
In 2011, a new group of 70 children from
underprivileged backgrounds discovered
the thrills of winter by participating in the
Snow Festival, organized by Children Now
whose goal is to put a little joy in their hearts.
The children, aged from 10 to 12, spent
three exceptional days in the country with
their friends.
Each day, they ate three delicious meals
and three generous snacks, which they
savoured with rosy cheeks resulting from
their participation in fun-filled activities in the
frosty air.
Innumerable entertaining activities, which
they may never have experienced otherwise,
were part of the program, such as tube sliding,
skating, tobogganing, curling, building snow
fortresses, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing,
preparing campfires in the snow, winter
camping, challenge courses, and identifying
animal trails.
This festival truly allowed them to celebrate the
cold season in all its glory.
Not only did they walk away with beautiful
memories that restored their hope for a better
life, but thanks to Children Now’s generous
donors and sponsors, the children also returned
home with surprises and useful items which
they will continue to benefit from, including
a sleeping bag, a tuque, a scarf, mittens and
winter boots.

On April 21, 2011, at the Holiday Inn Montreal Airport, 350 children
from the Chanoine-Joseph-Théorêt, Lévis-Sauvé, Ludger-Duvernay,
Notre‑Dame-de-la-Paix, Sainte-Colette and Saint-Rémi schools took part
in Children Now’s Easter Party. In the Quebec City region, at the Loews
Le Concorde Hotel, 350 children from the Chanoine-Côté, de l’Escabelle,
du Parc, Saint-Albert-le-Grand, Sainte-Odile and Saint-Fidèle schools as
well as the CPE Jardin Bleu participated in the festivities, and were, in
turn, equally spoiled!
Easter
Party
In the eyes of children who grow up in highincome families, Easter is a unique holiday
marked by countless chocolates, an Easter egg
hunt, and the presence of adorable bunnies,
chicks and ducklings. Sadly, Easter does not
make all children smile from such wonderful
surprises.
For numerous parents dealing with financial
difficulties, it is distressing to think that their
children will spend a day just like any other,
while everything stimulates their curiosity and
enthusiasm.
It must have been very reassuring for many
parents when they learned that their children
were invited to attend a celebration organized in
their honour by Children Now.
The interactive show by professional animators,
the impressive decorations from Serrano Studio,
and the warm hugs from their favourite mascots
made this Easter Party an unforgettable event
for 700 needy children.
Children between the ages of 4 to 6, had the
chance to jump on gigantic inflatable toys,
partake in arts and crafts workshops and have
their faces painted with colourful make-up
before the thrilling Easter egg hunt even began.
They were also astonished by the abundance
of yummy chocolates, the hot all-you-can‑eat
buffet, the candies and the magnificent
surprises.
A truck from RCI Environment Inc. awaited
the children at the end of the Easter Party,
overloaded with presents and chocolates
especially reserved for the 350 disadvantaged
children of the Montreal region, whereas
friendly policemen handed multicoloured stuffed
animals to the 350 underprivileged kids from the
region of Quebec.

In 2011, 200 children experienced the joys of a summer camp:
100 children from the Quebec city region participated at the Kéno Camp
in Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures and 100 children from Montreal did the
same at the Papillon Camp in Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez. Knowing how
challenging everyday life can be for these children, we ensure these trips
allow them to have fun, make friends, acquire new values and satisfy
their hunger each day. The gratitude they profusely express confirms the
importance of maintaining this activity, a source of genuine happiness for
these kids.
Don’t all children dream of spending their
holidays in a summer camp, surrounded by
friends with whom they can participate in a vast
array of exciting activities? For children who
grow up in the impoverished neighbourhoods of
Montreal and Quebec City, where there are very
few green areas or playgrounds, it is difficult
to even entertain the possibility. To alleviate
this injustice, Children Now allows these kids
to discover what real holidays are, a unique
experience that will brighten their childhood
and one they will remember throughout their
adult life.
In 2011, 200 children, aged 10 to 12, fully enjoyed
summer by participating in our camps. In
the Quebec City region, on July 21, 22 and 23,
35 children from the Association des familles
monoparentales ou recomposées La Source
and the Centre Communautaire Beauport
spent wonderful holidays at Camp Kéno in
Saint‑Augustin-de-Desmaures. From July 17
to 19, 30 kids from Centre Jeunesse de l’Estrie
and from July 19 to 21, 35 children from Patro
Charlesbourg enjoyed their stay there, too. As for
the Montreal region, 50 children from the Centre
communautaire de loisir de la Côte-des‑Neiges,
the Centre communautaire Val‑Martin and
from OMH de Laval stayed at Camp Papillon of
Saint‑Alphonse-Rodriguez between June 28
to 30. Finally, from August 23 to 25, another
50 children from CLSC Hochelaga‑Maisonneuve,
the Maison de famille Entre Parents in
Montréal‑Nord and from Loisirs communautaires
St-Michel enjoyed themselves at the same camp.
For the first time, these children got a taste of the
excitement of challenge courses and canoeing,
in addition to taking part in a treasure hunt,
going for long walks and taking in the beautiful
scenery, discovering the basics of a campfire,
enjoying themselves on waterslides and so much
more. Apart from the happiness that resulted
from spending time in the country, they also
received numerous surprises. Thanks to our
generous donors and sponsors, we gave children
essential goods they will continue to benefit
from long after their summer vacation, such
as sleeping bags, clothes, shoes, and toiletries
(toothpaste, soap, shampoo, etc).

During the fall of 2011, 120 children took part in Children Now’s
Ecological and Prevention Day. On September 27, kids from the Montreal
area went to Camp Papillon in Saint-Alphonse-Rodriguez. For their part,
children from the Quebec City region took the road to Domaine Scout
St‑Louis-de-France, near Trois-Rivières, on September 29. (Please note
that in Montreal, children benefitted from two Ecological Days instead of
one because the preceding year, a school had been forced to cancel at the
last moment.)
Ecological
and
Prevention
Day
Every year, Children Now’s Ecological and
Prevention Day allows 120 poverty-stricken
youngsters to spend a day outdoors and learn to
respect and protect nature.
Organized in the fall while the leaves are
changing colour, this activity becomes an
unforgettable experience.
During this magnificent day, children between
8 and 10 years old discover authentic and
remarkable landscapes under the friendly
supervision of devoted counsellors.
They are taught how to handle a compass,
pick wild mushrooms, complete a challenge
course, master the art of camouflage and many
other things.
Thanks to our loyal donors and sponsors,
they also receive their own compass, games,
clothing, a flashlight, and much more. Above
all, these children, who are often exposed to
the brutality of the poor neighbourhoods where
they are raised, realize the importance of
self‑respect, of respecting others, and of course,
of respecting our planet.
They learn that all is not bad in this world filled
with good people and wonderful discoveries.
Finally, an entertaining and educational
day where underprivileged children can be
immersed in the spectacular beauty of a
bountiful and serene nature, filled with treasures
worth protecting for the rest of their lives!

It is thanks to the generosity of our donors, sponsors and volunteers,
that December 2011 will remain forever ingrained in the minds of
700 kids from the Quebec and Montreal regions who participated in our
Christmas Show, On December 23, 350 children, aged six to eight, and
attending Dante, Sainte-Colette and Saint-Jean-Baptiste-de-la-Salle
schools, were entitled to an exceptional day filled with entertainment
and beautiful surprises at the Delta Hotel in Montreal. On December
20, 350 more children in grades 1 to 3 from La Pléiade, Saint-Fidèle,
Saint‑Jean‑Baptiste and Sans-Frontières schools had just as much fun at
the Hilton Hotel in Quebec.
Christmas is probably the most important day
of the year for kids. Although Christmas is a
magical time of year, very few children who grow
up in underprivileged families know what this
holiday means, apart from a feeling of exclusion,
injustice and lack of love, an unacceptable reality
for Children Now. For this reason, we organize
Christmas Shows to bring hope to these children
who, very often, have never had a Christmas
tree, never receive presents, and rarely eat to
satisfy their hunger.
From the day’s very beginning, the extraordinary
arrival of Santa Claus in his sleigh, pulled by
nine reindeer, as well as sightings of Mrs. Claus
and the Star Fairy amazed the children. To
create a wonderfully festive atmosphere,
Kromatik make-up artists painted the children’s
faces. The youngsters also took part in arts and
crafts workshops and watched energetic shows
by the Clowns du Carrousel who, once again,
stopped at nothing to amuse the crowd. Sixty
volunteers, all dressed up as elves, watched
over the children as they were delighted by
such great company. The attending mascots
also played and danced with the kids: Angus
from Industrial Alliance, Bobo from Brunet
Pharmacies, Caillou from Éditions Chouette,
Champion from the Québec Remparts, Coco
the ladybug from IKEA, Ecolo from the Comité
Écologique of Grand Montréal, Flik from the
Service de police de la ville de Montréal, Inuk
from Télé-Québec, Jippy from Métro GP, Krispy
Kernels from Aliments Krispy Kernels, Natureuil
from Clubs 4-H du Québec, Safety Bear from the
Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Polix from the
Sûreté du Québec, Slush Puppie from Monroy
Inc., Tac-Tik from the Impact of Montréal, Ti-Ga
from Sobeys, Vigile from the Service de police de
Québec and, of course, our mascot Pama.
The personnel of the Hilton Hotel in Quebec
City and the Delta Hotel in Montreal treated the
children to delicious hot all-you-can-eat buffets.
The spectacular decorations by the craftsmen
of Serrano Studio largely contributed to the
celebration’s magic. Finally, this memorable day
was marked by long-awaited presents, as well
as by an abundance of entertainment, surprises
and affection, which overjoyed the children.

Different Ways to Contribute
Help Us Offer Our Children
a Better Future!
CHILDREN NOW is a registered charitable
organisation and does not receive any continual
funding from the government or other financial
institutions. Therefore, it depends entirely on
funds generated by its donors and sponsors.
Without their support, Children Now could not
pursue its mission to protect and defend the
rights of children and youth in difficulty. You can
contribute in various different ways and help
make a difference in these young people’s lives.
Sponsor a child
For each annual activity designed for children,
Children Now seeks donors (residential,
corporate, religious institutions and foundations)
to give underprivileged children a chance
to participate. Thanks to their generous
collaboration, these kids have the opportunity to
live an unforgettable experience.
You can sponsor a child by contacting
Children Now by telephone, regular mail, or by
visiting the website at www.childrennow.ca.
Become a sponsor
Sponsors are essential to the realisation of our
activities, because they allow the organization
to offer impoverished children essential goods,
gifts, surprises, food, and much more.
Children Now accepts material
sponsorship throughout the year and, more
specifically, before the beginning of one of its
children’s activities.
Contribute to Children Now’s overall funding
While we require donations and sponsorships
for our specific events, we also encourage
contributions to the funding of our
overall activities.
Many costs are tied to the other initiatives
described in this annual report, such as the
international conferences and youth program.
Without the financial support of donors and
sponsors, Children Now could not help
children in our society.
It is also possible to make donations to the
organization in honour or in the memory of a
family member, friend or colleague.
To honour the memory of a loved one, you can
ask that donations be given to Children Now.
We will then send a thank you letter on your
behalf, to confirm that we have received
their contribution.

Lotomatique
Volunteer
Lotomatique is a subscription service that
allows you to play the lotteries of your choice
without having to buy tickets each week.
Due to the very limited budgets of non-profit
organizations, the collaboration of volunteers
is essential to ensure the continuity of their
services to the community in need.
These tickets are issued and verified directly
by Loto-Québec. Just as with the various
Loto‑Québec points of sale, you can either
play your own numbers or select Quick Pick
(computer-generated numbers).
By participating in Lotomatique, you help
finance CHILDREN NOW without spending an
extra penny. Since 1978, Loto-Québec has
entrusted Lotomatique sales to non-profit
organizations (NPOs) and charities for more
than 30 million dollars. The registration number
of Children Now is 603410.
Children Now wants to specify that is not
encouraging gambling but just offering people
another way to donate for underprivileged
children.
To signup to Lotomatique, just call
Children Now or visit the Loto-Québec
internet site.
If you do not have the means to make a financial
contribution, but wish to offer a few hours
per week to a good cause, Children Now
encourages you to get involved as a volunteer.
Children Now is looking for devoted,
energetic, motivated, reliable and
responsible individuals to help
in the organization of its
many activities for
disadvantaged children.
To join our team, you can complete
a volunteer form on our website
at www.childrennow.ca. You can also
download and print the form, and
send it to us by fax or by mail.
