TICSO-OCCTI will start Saturday evening, May 7, and end Thursday evening, May 12. INVITATION TO AUDITION Musicfest Canada, “The Nationals” invites you to audition for the Thomastik-Infeld Canadian String Orchestra, an honour group for string players aged 14 to 24. Participating in the orchestra under Maestro Michael Gilbert will be an important and memorable event in your life. Please contact us if you have any questions. HOW TO AUDITION • Prepare the audition material as outlined below. Be sure that you have the etude for your instrument. • Record your audition (audio only) in a single take. See directions below. • Upload the recording to the Musicfest.ca website on or before March 1, 2016. AUDITON MATERIAL 1. Scales - The highest notes can be repeated to make it easier to fit the patterns. a) Three octave major scale (2 octaves for Double Bass) to be played in quarter notes at MM q = 96: ascending using separate bows in detaché strokes and descending in the pattern two separate, two slurred. b) Three octave minor scale in melodic form (2 octaves for Double Bass) to be played in eighth notes at MM q = 96: slurred in groups of four. 2. Technical Etude composed by Wayne Toews – play as much of the etude as possible. Partial performances are acceptable. See below. 3. Own choice - one or two pieces totaling not more than 5 minutes that will demonstrate your tone, intonation and musical interpretation. Do NOT use an accompanist for the audition recording. If your selection has a passage where only the accompaniment would play simply count one measure rest and continue. THE RECORDING Use recording equipment that will give a clear and accurate account of your playing. 1. Begin my stating your name, instrument then your city and province of home residence. 2. Record the material in the order given above in a single take. Give the name and composer of your own choice selection(s). 3. At the end of your own choice selection you are welcome to select ONE of the items (a scale, etude or own-choice piece) and re-record it. 4. Those who are accepted must login again to complete the registration process. This is in addition to everything you have done before. INFORMATION ABOUT COSTS SPONSORSHIP/REGISTRATION FEE There is NO audition/registration/participation/ fee to participate with any of the honour ensembles. Thomastik-Infeld and Musicfest Canada underwrite the operating costs for conductors, music, rehearsal space, clinicians, guest soloists, musical equipment, technical staff and concert venue. The objective is to provide a special educational opportunity for Canada’s most outstanding young musicians. TRANSPORTATION to and from Ottawa is the responsibility of each individual musician. Ellison Travel and Tours can make arrangements either by air, train or bus and they will find the lowest possible price. PARTICIPANT ACCOMMODATIONS Accommodations for members, directors, and staff have been arranged at the University of Ottawa, University Residence, 90 University Ave., Ottawa, ON, K1N 1H3. They are private sleeping rooms with a common area. Complimentary WiFi is available. Members of the honour ensembles are encouraged to stay at the University of Ottawa, but ARE NOT required to do so. Some members will be traveling with their own school group(s) and others are local students who already have accommodations in the area. For those wishing to stay at the University of Ottawa, the cost is $375.00 for the week. All meals will be the responsibility of the individual. Cheques should be made payable to Musicfest Canada and mailed to 311 Main St., Exeter, ON N0M 1S7 by April 8, 2016. Musicfest is subsidizing the cost to have participants reside close to the rehearsal locations. Because these rooms are subsidized, they are limited to members of the honour groups and can only be booked through the Musicfest Canada office. These arrangements are limited to six (6) nights only. If you require accommodations, please indicate so on your online registration record by April 1, 2016 so we can make the proper arrangements. If you have a preference for the person sharing the room, please indicate that on your online registration. These rooms are limited to parents, relatives and friends of participants of the Honour Ensembles. Those who are accepted into the Thomastik-Infeld Canadian String Orchestra will be notified and sent details about accommodation, schedule, etc. before March 30, 2016. BONUS All who are accepted into the Thomastik-Infeld Canadian String Orchestra can purchase Thomastik-Infeld Orchestra Strings (not guitar strings) at any location of Long and McQuade from the time they receive their acceptance until April 30th of the following year at a 25% discount. These strings are for their own personal use only. They must be willing to provide Long and McQuade with some basic information (such as name, address, and telephone number) so that they can be set up with an account identifying them as a member of the orchestra in order to register their discount. Une étude composée par Wayne Toews – jouez autant de l’étude que possible. Les versions incomplètes seront acceptées. Voir ci-dessous. 3. À votre choix - une ou deux pièces d’une durée totale de cinq minutes maximum qui démontre votre qualité de son, votre intonation et votre interprétation musicale. Ne utiliser PAS d’accompagnateur(trice) pour l’audition enregistrée. Si votre répertoire comporte un passage où seul l’accompagnement joue, veuillez compter une mesure de silence seulement avant de continuer jouer. L’ENREGISTREMENT Utilisez d’équipement d’enregistrement de qualité avec un son clair. 1. Commencez en disant votre nom, et ensuite présentez votre instrument ainsi que votre ville et votre province. 2. Enregistrez le matériel selon l’ordre décrit plus haut en une seule prise. Nommez le titre et le compositeur des œuvres choisies. 3. À la fin de vos œuvres choisies, vous pouvez réenregistrez un élément (gamme, étude ou une des pièces choisies). 4. INFORMATIONS À PROPOS DES FRAIS COMMANDITAIRES/FRAIS D’INSCRIPTION Il n’y a PAS de frais d’audition/inscription/participation pour participer aux groupes d’honneurs. Musicfest Canada et ses commanditaires absorbent les coûts d’opérations pour les chefs, les partitions, les lieux de répétition, les cliniciens, les solistes invités, les équipements musicaux, l’équipe technique et la salle de concert. L’objectif est de fournir une opportunité spéciale d’éducation pour de jeunes musiciens Canadiens exceptionnels. LE TRANSPORT Le transport sera la responsabilité de chaque participant. Ce sont des chambres à coucher privées avec un espace commun. Le Wi-Fi est disponible et gratuit. Les membres des ensembles d'honneur sont encouragés à rester à l'Université d'Ottawa, mais NE SONT PAS OBLIGÉS de le faire. Certains membres se rendront avec leurs propres groupes et d'autres sont des étudiants locaux qui ont déjà un hébergement dans la région. Pour ceux qui souhaitent rester à l'Université d'Ottawa, le coût est de 375,00 $ pour la semaine. Tous les repas seront à la charge de l'individu. Ces cordes doivent être à l’intention d’une utilisation personnelle.
