Saturday, February 21st PARK AVENUE ARMORY New York City 9 Welcome to the sixteenth annual Gala of the Lycée Français de New York, “Sortir du Cadre – The World is Your Canvas.” We are delighted that you have been able to join us this evening, helping our school to advance its mission: to provide our 1350 students, from some 50 countries around the world, with an outstanding education inside and outside the classroom, in keeping with the best of French and American educational principles and practices. Bienvenue au 16ème Gala du Lycée Français de New York, « Sortir du Cadre – The World is Your Canvas. “Sortir du Cadre – The World is Your Canvas” celebrates art as a form of self-expression, as a reflection of our shared humanity, as a means of community-building around the globe. Art occupies an especially important place in the LFNY’s bilingual, pluricultural program, which prepares our students to be highly inquisitive, dynamic, creative contributors to the world at large. This year, we are privileged to honor the visionary artist JR with the Charles de Ferry de Fontnouvelle Award. Renowned for the global, participatory project “INSIDE OUT”, JR demonstrates the power of art to inspire and unite people across boundaries. On behalf of the Lycée Français de New York, we wish to express our deep appreciation to JR for his support to our school as it continues to excel and to innovate. Thank you very much for your presence among us tonight. Our sincere gratitude to everyone who has enabled “Sortir du Cadre – The World is Your Canvas” to be the remarkable success our students deserve. Special thanks to Gala co-chairs Anne-Gaëlle Van de Weghe, Catherine Flores Silie, Nastassja Balick Coppers, and Anthony Coppers, for the extraordinary imagination, care and dedication with which they have organized this unique event. STEPHAN H. HAIMO Chairman, Board of Trustees President, Conseil D’Administration SEAN LYNCH Head of School Proviseur 11 JR exhibits freely in the streets of the world, catching the attention of people who are not typical museum visitors. From the suburbs of Paris to the Israel/Palestine border, to the slums of Kenya to the favelas of Brazil. In 2006, he created Portrait of a Generation, portraits of suburban “thugs” that he posted, in huge formats, in the bourgeois districts of Paris. This illegal project became “official” when the Paris City Hall wrapped its building with JR’s photos. In 2007, with business partner Marco, he made Face 2 Face, the biggest illegal exhibition ever. JR posted huge portraits of Israelis and Palestinians face to face in eight Palestinian and Israeli cities on each side of the wall of separation. In 2008, he embarked on a long international trip for Women Are Heroes, in which he underlines the dignity of women who are often the targets of conflicts, and created The Wrinkles of the City. In 2010, his film Women Are Heroes was presented at Cannes. In 2011 he won the TED Prize, and created Inside Out, a global participatory project that allows people worldwide to get their picture taken and paste it to support an idea and share their experience – as of September 2014, over 220,000 people from more than 120 countries have participated, through mail or gigantic photobooths. His most recent projects involve a photobooth truck in Times Square where 6,000 New Yorkers participated, a collaboration with New York City Ballet, a huge installation on the Pantheon in Paris, and the pasting of a container ship. “Unframed – Ellis Island” is JR’s current project in NYC. As he remains anonymous and doesn’t explain his huge full-frame portraits of people making faces, JR leaves the space empty for an encounter between the subject/protagonist and the passerby/interpreter. That is what JR's work is about, raising questions...
