The very restrictive enrolment policy is achieving the expected results
where we had just over 200 new enrolments this year compared to over
330 last year. Of this about half were siblings from the EN/FR/DE/ES
sections while the rest were new applicants from the EL/NE and CZ
sections where there were no constraints. By contrast Uccle grew by
around 450 people to nearly 3100 and Woluwe dropped slightly to just
under 3000. So we are the smallest of the 3 schools at present!

How long this will last is still up in the air. In its September meeting the
Board of Governors decided to refuse the Berkendael site proposed by
the Belgian government as a transition school and urgently requested a
seriously suitable alternative: close to Laeken, large enough for the
requirements, suitable for nursery as well as primary, with minimal
logistical issues etc. The arguments have been well aired. The 3
Brussels APEEE’s advocated this position as did (overwhelmingly) a
General Assembly of the present and future parents called by the local
Staff committees of the Institutions. At the same time for us at Ixelles it is
vital to maintain the decision made at the Hague in April that all current
pupils and sections in the existing schools stay put and that the
Transition site (wherever located) be part of Brussels IV and not an
annex to an existing school. So for now everything is at a standstill for at
least a month.
September is the month when all our children get used to their new
classes and teachers and, for many, new subjects. And soon over 400
parents will have volunteered their time and effort to be Class
Representatives. On behalf of the Association I would like to thank all
those who decided to continue in this role and welcome all the new
representatives.
This term we have a brand new event organised by the APEEE’s of the 3
schools : a month-long Art Ex h ib it io n at the Berlaymont displaying
the artistic gifts of our children - with a C hr i s t ma s M a rk e t evening on

December 8 during which our talented children and teenagers will have
the opportunity to sing, dance or play an instrument while the public
walks around to admire the art work or taste different national foods.

Tony Lowe has inspired and
supported Springfest at our school
from the moment Mr McArdle
introduced it. I am writing this article
to thank him publicly for a
contribution, which over the years
has become a t ra d it io n,
s l ig ht ly dif f e re nt , s li g ht l y
be t t e r e a c h t i me .
There can be few parents, teachers
or secondary pupils who would not
recognise the man who always
sings at Springfest and in primary
who wrote songs specially for them
at the opening ceremony! Primary
secondary liaison? His daughters
taught the primary their first
Springfest dance!
When I first became involved in
Springfest, people referred to 'Tony,
the person who sorts the outside
podium entertainment, oh and helps
with the opening ceremony' I could
add lots more 'Oh ands'. He has
been a be hi n d- t h e - s c e n e s
e nt hu s i a s t and hard worker as
well as a performer. Who was
around to sort the sound when we
couldn't find the experts? Tony!
We will all remember fondly the
atmosphere created by him at those
moments between performances, as
well as that time at the end of the
primary school day when teachers
could relax with parents and
children in the primary playground
with a drink and a snack, backed by
his live music and last year by his
band as well.

Nous recherchons pour le comité de la
bibliothèque de l’école primaire des membres
volontaires prêts à prendre la responsabilité
de la section française et de la section
néerlandaise. Cela veut dire s'impliquer dans
les réunions du comité (1 fois tous les 2 mois),
aider à organiser des manifestations
ponctuelles pour collecter des fonds (foire aux
livres, marché de Noel, concert) et aider
quand cela est nécessaire et de manière
ponctuelle
notre
bibliothécaire.
Nous
souhaitons aussi mettre en place des projets
tels que "le journal de la bibliothèque".

Dear parents,
The primary library committee is looking for
volunteer members willing to represent the
French and Dutch language sections. The
representative would participate in the
committee meetings (once every two months),
help organize special fund-raising activities
(book fair, x-mas market, concert) and help
our librarian when necessary. We would also
like to start new projects, such as the library
newspaper.

„Diverse but United“
Last June, the APEEE of Woluwe organised an art exhibition at
the Berlaymont; gathering paintings and sculptures of their
talented students. The children were very proud to show their hard
work to parents and officials form the different institutions.
The Commission President Mr Barroso addressed the public
during the opening ceremony, the Woluwe APEEE President Mr
Stenger was also extremely proud of the organisation of the
event.
At the end of the last school year, the three APEEE Presidents,
Alain Kruys, Michael Stenger and Tony Bernard thought of
organising a joint event before the holiday season starts,
promoting the talents of all three schools and Périscolaires.
The theme is “Diverse but United for the Holiday Season”.
The exhibition will be held from November 20 to December 14
with a special evening on December 8 (5PM-10PM).

representing all the EU member states’ holiday foods.
During this evening, our talented children and teenagers will have
the opportunity to sing, dance or play an instrument while the
public walks around the Berlaymont Piazza to admire the art work
or taste the different foods for sale in the cafeteria. The earnings
of the food sale will go to charities.
We will also welcome, during this evening, the Commission
President, Commissioners, members of the Parliament and other
high level officials.

national specialities and/or help on the different food stands.

The organising committee, Cynthia Simpson (XL), Antonella
Moruzzi (Uccle), Helena Correia (Woluwe) and Irina Sels
(Woluwe) have agreed to divide the responsibilities for the food
sale (of the large linguistic sections) amongst the three schools.

All the other linguistic sections will be covered by the school they
belong to.

« Unis dans la Diversité… »
En juin dernier, l'APEEE de Woluwé a organisé une exposition au
Berlaymont; réunissant des peintures et sculptures de leurs étudiants. Les
enfants étaient très fiers de montrer leur travail aux parents et aux
fonctionnaires des différentes institutions.
Le Président de la Commission M. Barroso s’est adressé au public pendant
la cérémonie inaugurale, le Président de l’APEEE de Woluwé Mr . Stenger
fût également très fier des travaux présentés.
A la fin de la dernière année scolaire, les trois Présidents APEEE, Alain
Kruys, Michel Stenger et Tony Bernard ont décidé d’organiser un
événement commun avant les fêtes de fin d’année, promouvant les talents
des trois écoles et du périscolaire.
Le thème est “Unis dans la Diversité pour de Joyeuses Fêtes”.
L'exposition se tiendra du 20 novembre au 14 décembre inclus avec une
soirée spéciale le 8 décembre (17 heures-22 heures).
Le 8 décembre, se tiendra le Marché de Noël représentant tous les produits
alimentaires des différents états membres.
Durant cette soirée, nos enfants et adolescents auront l'occasion de
chanter, danser ou jouer d’un instrument tandis que le public pourra se
promener entre les œuvres d’art et goûteront les différentes spécialités
vendues dans la cafétéria. Les bénéfices de la vente iront à différentes
œuvres de charité.
Nous accueillerons aussi, pendant cette soirée, le Président de la
Commission, les Commissaires, les membres du Parlement et d'autres
fonctionnaires de haut niveau.
Pour réussir cet événement, nous avons besoin de volontaires pour

During the Christmas Market, each country represented in the schools will have a booth to present their
Holiday Specialities (food). In order to organise this efficiently, each school has been allocated certain
sections: Ixelles will coordinate the French/Belgian, Dutch/Belgian, Greek, Czech and Slovak
sections. WE NEED YOU TO BRING YOUR SPECIALITIES TO THE STAND. We also need a
coordinator for each one of the countries represented. Please contact [email protected] if you
wish to help out! All the earnings collected during the Christmas Market will go to charities.

Des bonnes surprises comme ça, on
en redemande!
Le 22 juin dernier, nous étions invités (parents et
professeurs concernés) à une représentation de FANFAN
LA TULIPE, organisée principalement par la S2eFRa avec
le concours de quelques « électrons libres » d’autres
classes.

Le théâtre de l’école était presque plein : quelques
professeurs au premier rang, des parents armés d’un
caméscope ou d’un appareil-photo, des frères et sœurs…

J’avais bien sûr entendu parler de la chose. J’avais bien
conduit ma Victoria à une ou deux répétitions dans une
maison privée. J’avais prêté des costumes et donné des
fonds de peinture pour la réalisation des décors. Mais
franchement, j’y allais pour faire plaisir à ma fille… comme
beaucoup d’autres, j’imagine.

Et là, quelle merveilleuse surprise ! C’était d’une telle
qualité ! Des décors colorés réalisés avec deux fois rien, un
vrai casting de pro, des costumes qui typaient bien les
personnages, un scénario tout à fait construit et une mise
en scène dynamique. J’étais tellement médusée que j’en
oubliais quelquefois de prendre des photos !
Sous la houlette enthousiaste de Carlotta Lateur (qui avait
même embauché sa maman de force dans le stress de la
fin des répétitions), ces élèves ont réalisé seuls un travail
extraordinaire qui a été très applaudi. De plus, à la sortie
dans le hall, un petit apéro bien sympa nous attendait.
Merci à tous et toutes. Bravo encore et … rendez-vous en
juin prochain pour une autre pièce ?
