Today, Marquillies is known in particular for its museum of horse-drawn vehicles, which has over thirty vehicles dating from 1900 to 1960 and used for carrying people in town and country, including farm carts, fire engine pumps and even a hearse. Finally, let us pay tribute to Paul Sion, born in Marquillies in 1886. He was a trades union leader and politician in Lens, a valiant member of the Resistance and presided over the Liberation Council until 1945. Marquillies. of the few parts of the church that survived the destruction was the bell, on which was inscribed: “… I hope one day to ring in celebration of victory and the return of Alsace and Lorraine to France”. The Germans therefore decided to put it on show in Berlin rather than turn it into munitions. After being kept for a while in the Museum of Fine-Arts in Lille, it was re-hung in the new church in Marquillies. The second incident was the explosion in mid-air, on the night of the 5th-6th October 1942, of a British Halifax bomber on its way to bomb Aachen. Fortunately for the Museum of horse-drawn vehicles. Two incidents, however, provide evidence of a degree of mercy shown to the town. During the First World War, one Countryside in the Weppes district. Gifts from the skies and the earth 2 Notes for walkers: A trail predominantly on farming land around Marquillies. Take care along the RD 145, which at least has a wide verge. Best time of year: April to October. A B C D E F G Autour de la Libaude (11 km - 2 hr 45 or 3 hr 40) 1 Start: church, Marquillies. The church bell dates from 1700. The steeple fell silent in 1870 after the Germans requisitioned the bell. Intending to melt it down to make cannons. When it was restored, it bore the inscription: “I praise the true God, I call the faithful to divine office and I hope one day to ring in celebration of the return to France of Alsace and Lorraine.”. In 1914, the Germans wished to recover the bell and discovered the compromising inscription. From that time onwards, each German victory on the Russian front was rung and engraved on the bell. It was transported to Berlin in 1916, but later returned to its new steeple. In the cemetery, visitors can reflect at the tomb of the Chevalier Edouard Peterinck (1797-1835) groom to Charles X, or of Monsignor Clabaut who was the first bishop to the Inuit. 1 Go along the rue Léon-Bacquet towards the Mairie, then the rue de Verdun. At the next intersection turn left and cross over the railway line and then, a little further on, right. 3 5 2 5 Head off to the left towards the hamlet of Hocron and then 600 m further on take a path to your right that runs along besides some farms. 6 Turn left; at the road turn left and at the wayside cross turn right along the cobbled track. At the end, walk along to the left on the wide verge of the RD 145 for 800 m, before turning left towards the horse-drawn vehicle museum. 4 3 4 2 Go right. Pass by the Ferme des Mottes (dried flowers) – a large building dating from 1769 and with an enclosed courtyard – and turn left. At the stop sign, carry on ahead on the route de Franquise, along the left-hand side of the farm buildings. Follow the guide! Arrows, marker posts and paint marks are positioned all along the various circuits. 7 Go on to the museum on your right – take care. The museum is housed in an old sheepfold dating from 1750.
