Welcome to Sea Scout Armada 2011
Scouts and guides from around the world
are heading to Kristianstad, Sweden, where
they will join at the World Jamboree in July

2011. As sea scouts we should not miss this
event and we must join this celebration like
proper sea scouts and sea guides.
The only proper way to participate is to sail
to the Jamboree in Sweden. “That’s
impossible, too far, we do not have the
appropriate sailing vessels to do this” I am
hearing already. But we are scouts who are
always prepared to accept challenges,
and above all, we are sea scouts, willing to
participate on such a wonderful event.
Armada 2011 briefly summarized
This sailing Armada is open to all scouts and
guides who are at least 16 years old and
who are actively registered in the Sea
Scout program. The event starts beginning
of July 2011 in Norway and the Netherlands.
Along the way, other Sea Scout boats will
come together and sail to Ähus, near
Kristianstad. Two flotillas will come together
in Malmö, Sweden; one is coming from
Norway, the second from the Kiel Canal for
the more southern countries of the Baltic
Sea. Other countries are welcome to apply.
During this trip seamanship and leadership
skills will be tested as sailing on the Baltic
Sea is very challenging.
Come join the international fun. You will get
a chance to meet some of the world’s best
Sea Scout sailors and will also learn a lot on
sailing in unfamiliar waters. So if you want
action and adventure on the high seas while making a little history, then here is
your chance!
Dates
In three days of sailing for about 50-70 miles
per day, we should sail from Malmö to our
destination Ähus.
• The complete Armada should arrive
latest in Malmö on Sunday, 24 July.
• On Monday, 25 July sailing from Malmö
towards Trelleborg or Ystadt
• Tuesday, 26 July, we will sail from
Trelleborg or Ystad to Island Bornholm
• On Wednesday, 27 July, we will sail from
Island Bornholm to Ähus, our final
destination.
• Thursday, 28 July we visit the Jamboree
camp site and have a closing party
•
Friday, 29 July everybody is leaving Ähus
to sail homewards.
Organization
The Sea scout Armada 2011 is an
international flotilla sailing organization that
will provide in extra splendor for the
occasion of the opening of the 2011 World
Jamboree. During intermediate stops it will
bring together sea scouts from all over the
world, and give them the occasion to join
the Armada and the Jamboree. Further,
the event will promote sea scouting.
The organizing authority for the event is a
temporary international Sea Scout
Committee that only provides in the
opportunity and good organizational
conditions. This committee will maintain the
best contacts with all Authorities and
intermediate for all accommodation. The
Skippers are fully responsible for their crew
and ship and are asked to follow strictly the
guidelines from the Armada organization.
Ships have to be adequately insured and
to comply with all international (safety)
regulations.
Every participant (crew member) has to be
a regular member of a national or local
scouting organization and has full
insurance coverage. During the event the
growing flotilla will be hosted in the area of
different local sea scout groups who will
provide in a Program.
How to Participate
Register a soon as possible with you interest
in participating, by sending an email to
Morten Haugstad or Nico Van Mierop and
confirming how your boat/country will
participate. Please provide us some route
information and the number of boats you
will sail.

Nouveaux bateaux pour les Scouts

New Boats for Danish Sea Scouts

Danish Sea Scouts have taken delivery of
two new boats with which they will
experiment as boats for patrols. As a result
of the current financial situation it proved
impossible to set the BP 100 boat in
production, so a good look at boats
already in production was made. After
trying various boat types it was decided
that the Skippi 650 (from Skipper Yachts,
Poland) matched our requirements the
closest.
We
managed
to get
them
home in
time to
launch
them on
Hosterbro
Lake
during our
National
Camp
2009. In
the photo
you can see the Camp Chief Inga
christening Cicely. The other boat was
named Warington by Helle our Chief Scout.
We have trailers for both boats so Cicely
went direct from the camp to
Copenhagen and off for 2 weeks summer
cruise while the other went home with a
local group. One of the boats is stationed
on Sjælland and the other in Jutland and
Fyn. Groups can borrow the boats for four
to six weeks free of charge. It is hoped that
the boats will visit all Sea Scout groups over
the next two years, after which time we will
evaluate their usefulness.

feront des expériences comme de
nouveaux bateaux de patrouille.
À la suite de la situation financière actuelle
il était impossible de mettre le bateau "BP
100" en production, donc on a fait un bon
coup d’oeil aux bateaux déjà dans la
production, et il a été décidé que le Skippi
650 (de Skipper Yachts, la Pologne) a
correspondu à nos exigences le plus
proche.
Nous avons réussi à les recevoir à la maison
à temps pour les lancer sur le Lac Hosterbro
pendant notre Camp National 2009. Dans
la photo vous pouvez voir le Chef de
Camp Inga baptiser "Cicely" pendant que
l’autre bateau a été appelé "Warington"
par Helle, notre Chef Scout.
Nous avons des remorques pour les deux
bateaux, donc "Cicely" est allée directe du
camp à Copenhague pour croisière de 2
semaines pendant que l’autre est allé à la
maison avec un groupe local. Un des
bateaux est posté sur Sjælland et d’autre
dans Jutland et Fyn. Les groupes peuvent
emprunter les bateaux pendant 4/6
semaines gratuitement. Il est espéré que les
bateaux passeront à tous les groupes
pendant les 2 ans prochains où nous
pouvons évaluer leur usage.
Comme Helle a dit quand elle a baptisé
Warington “si ce bateau n’est pas que
vous cherchez alors nous devrons essayer
quelque chose d’autre, la chose
importante est de continuer à essayer de
nouvelles choses.”
As Helle said when she christened
Warington, “If the boat is not what you are
looking for then we will have to try
something else. The important thing is to
keep trying new things.”

L’histoire du scoutisme
marin n’avait jusqu’à
présent que très peu
été étudiée. Le
centenaire offre donc
une bonne occasion
de s’y plonger pour
de bon avant que
certains témoins
n’aient disparu et que
des pans entiers de
cette riche épopée
n’aient été oubliés des
scouts actifs. Un livre
en français vient heureusement répondre à
cette préoccupation. En 260 pages et 22
illustrations souvent peu connues, il
présente le démarrage du scoutisme marin
en Grande-Bretagne et aux Etats-Unis, puis
le déroulement de 90 ans de scoutisme
marin en France sans oublier de jeter un
oeil plus rapide sur d’autres pays.

The History of Sea Scouts
The history of sea scouts has not been very
much studied until now. The centenary is a
good opportunity to plunge in before some
witnesses have disappeared and whole
sections of this rich epic have been
forgotten by working scouts. A book in
french answers happilessly to this concern.
In 260 pages and 22 pictures generally not
known, it introduces the beginning of sea
scouting in the UK and the US, then the
sequence of 90 years of sea scouting in
France and sometimes in other countries.

Velascout Lombardia: First Scout Sailing

The centenary of Scouting occurred in
2007, and 2010 marked the centenary of
Sea
Scouting.
In Italy this
form of
Scouting
has
remained
fairly small
but has
neverthele
ss made
good progress. In our region however we
had to wait until 1984 for the Nautical
Department of Lovere to be established.
The head of the regional Nautical
Department undertook the development
of Sea Scouting and of Scout sailing in
Lombardy. As a result, 15 boats with crews
of leaders and Explorers from Lombardy
competed in the first Sea Scout Sailing
Regatta on 22-23 May 2010.
Participants gathered on Saturday at the
Lovere Sailing Club for a briefing. Scouts
then shuttled by boat to the Pisogne Sea
Scout Base where they stayed overnight.

day,
wearing
life jackets,
embarked in their boats, prepared for the
start of the regatta with as little time
wasted as possible! Participants had field
manuals available so that they could
correctly interpret signs and flags from the
race committee boat. Finally, the horn
sounded and the race began.
The triangular race was run twice: Lovere /
Trentapassi / Pisogne / Lovere. Winds were

gusty with intermittent calms. After two
hours of racing and maneuvering, all but
two crews crossed the finish line. From there
the Scouts sailed to the boat dock, folded
sails, and waited to find out who won.
The race jury finally announced the results
and presented the awards:

Le centenaire du Scouting était en 2007, et
en 2010 le centenaire du Scoutisme Marin a
commencé. En Italie en général cette
forme de Scouting est restée relativement
petite, mais a fait le bon progrès, Mais dans
notre région, nous avons dû attendre
jusqu’à 1984 le département nautique de
Lovere d’être fondé.
Les responsables de ce département ont
entrepris le développement de Scoutisme
Marin, et
de la voile
en
Scoutisme,
à
Lombardie
. À la suite
de ce
travail, 15
bateaux
avec les
équipages des Chefs et des Explorateurs de
Lombardie ont rivalisé dans la premiére
régate du Scoutisme Marin en Lombardie,
22-23 Mai 2010.
Les participants se sont rassemblés samedi
dans le club de navigation de Lovere, pour
le briefing et l’allocation des bateaux, Ils
alors transféré en bateau à la Base des
Scouts Marins de Pisogne, où ils sont restés
jusqu’au lendemain.
Les équipages se sont rassemblés dans le
club de navigation le jour suivant - “s’usent
votre ceinture de sauvetage” ‘entreprennent vos bateaux’ - “se
préparent pour le début si vite que
possible! - “le manuel de course en main
pour correctement interpréter les signes et
les drapeaux du bateau de juges” finalement le son de la corne pour le début
de la course.
La course court deux fois autour du triangle
- Lovere / Trentapassi / Pisogne / Lovere. Le
vent était venteux, avec les p`eriodes de
calme. Après deux heures des courses et
du fait de manoeuvrer, tous les équipages
(moins deux, pour le record), a traversé la
ligne d’arrivée, au nouveau son de la
corne du bateau des juges. Ils naviguent
au dock de bateau et plient les voiles et
attendent... Qui gagnera ?
Le jury est finalement prêt avec les résultats
sur le temps corrigé et commence la
présentation des prix :

The Big 5 Kayak Challenge 2008-2009
In 2008, the “Big 5 Kayak Challenge” was
planned by a small team of canoeists in
the U.K. to undertake 5 distinct and unique
expeditions, to try to raise money for
Muscle Help Foundation. One of the
canoeists in this team is Aisling Ní Chuinn,
former Sea Scout Leader of Buíon Fodhla in
8th Port of Dublin Sea Scouts Dun Laoghaire,
who is currently working in the UK.
This group of canoeists decided to attempt
5 big challenges in canoeing:
1. Circumnavigation of the Isle of Wight,
South Coast of England – 85 miles;
completed in September 2008.
2. Paddling the length of the River Thames
– 183 miles (in Arctic conditions, as it
turned out!); completed February 2009.
3. Crossing the English Channel, dodging
ferries, 30 miles open sea
4. Crossing from Lands End to Scilly Isles –
30 miles open sea; May 09.
5. The Inside Passage - Vancouver to
Alaska – nearly 1,000 miles, from
Vancouver to Glacier Bay in Alaska

avoiding orcas and bears; completed in
July 09.
The “Why Not” attitude runs deep in the
team and the idea of fund raising seemed
obvious. But as well as raising money for
charity, the canoeists also wanted to raise
awareness for the “River Access
Campaign” in England and Wales, where
canoeists have access to only 3% of English
and Welsh rivers – unbelievable !!!
Les 5 Grands Défis de Kayak 2008-2009
Les Grands 5 Défis de Kayak a été planifié
par une petite équipe de canoéistes dans
le Royaume-Uni. Le but fut d’entreprendre
5 uniques expéditions, de procurer des
fonds pour le “Muscle Help Foundation”.
L’une des canoéists, Aisling Ní Chuinn, qui
en ce moment travaille au Royaume-Uni,
était la responsable d’une troupe des
Scoutes Marines à Dublin. Aisling et sa
soeur Caoimhe participerent à la Course
de Canoë de Westminster en 2006 (voir
l’article dans l’Édition 23 d’Euronaut, l’avril
de 2008).
Les 5 Grand Défis sont:
1. La circumnavigation de
l’Ilot de Wight, 85 miles Septembre 08.
2. La Tamise, 183 miles en 36
heures dans les conditions
arctiques -Fevrier 09.
3. La Traversée de la La Manche,
esquivant des navires, 30 miles au large.
4. La Traversée de Lands End aux Ilots de
Scilly - 30 miles au large, Mai 09 .
5. “Le Passage par l’Intérieur” - Vancouvre
à l’Alaska - 1000 miles, de Vancouver au
Clacier Muir, évitant orques et ours ! juillet 09.
Le philosophe de “ Pourquoi Pas ?” est trés
fort dans l’équipe et l’idée de la collecte
de fonds semblait évident. Ils ont aussi voulu
mettre en relief “ la Campagne d’Accès
des Rivières” dans le Royaume-Uni, où les
canoéistes ont accès à seulement 3% des
rivières en Angleterre et au Pays de Galles –
incroyable !!!
The next Big 5 Kayak Challenges 2010

After last year’s adventures we were left
wondering what to do next.
We loved the mixture of a physical
challenge, the spiritual peace of being in
remote places and the sheer beauty of the
natural world.
We wished to retain the best parts of the
earlier challenges and reduce the
elements that weren’t so much fun. We
wanted less of the long open water sea
crossings, out of sight of land for hours at a
time, which were often very tedious. It was
so much more enjoyable to paddle close
to the shore, enjoying the fascinating
coastal landscapes, and regularly
encountering wildlife.
We also wanted to continue river paddling
and to continue to promote and support
the River Access Campaign. We talked to
many people along the Inside Passage
challenge, including members of the first
nation communities. They
couldn’t believe that
some waters in England
were private and had
restricted access. England
and Wales are the only
countries in the world that
operate bizarre and
outdated legislation which restricts public
access to rivers on such a large scale.
So, 2010, these are our challenges:
1. Kayaking Round Malta – As with the Isle
of Wight in last years challenges, we
wished to include a circumnavigation.
An invitation was extended to the team
by “Rugged Coast Adventures” (based
in Malta) at last year’s Outdoor Show,
which we have happily accepted. This
Challenge has already been
completed.
2. Canoeing the Yukon River – We have
been unable to shake off the draw of
the Alaskan wilderness, and plan to
return to experience more of the wild
side of Alaska, as well as the Yukon
region, this time river canoeing, and
Euronaut / Issue 27 / June 2010 / page 6 of 10
following the prospectors’ route along
the Yukon River.
3. John O Groats to the Orkney Isles –
Scottish sea paddling is simply stunning
and the Orkneys will provide a great
destination, at the end of a very
exposed open sea crossing.
4. Scotland to Ireland, via Jura and the
Corryvreckin whirlpool – The idea of
paddling to Ireland (to keep our Irish
team member happy) has been there
for a while. And we thought we might as
well paddle across the third biggest
whirlpool in the world along the way.
5. London to Marrakesh – We love the idea
of paddling to Africa, but without
enough time to paddle all the way, we
decided to include cycling into the mix.
This challenge will involve over 2,000
miles of kayaking and cycling. Paddling
the straits of Gibraltar and landing on
the shores of Morocco will no doubt be
an unforgettable experience.

Après les aventures d’année dernière, nous
nous avons demandé que faire ensuite.
Nous avons aimé le mélange d’un défi
physique, la paix spirituelle d’être dans les
endroits lointains et la beauté absolue du
monde naturel.
Nous avons voulu retenir les meilleures
parties des premiers défis et réduire les
éléments qui ont été pas tellement
amusants. Nous avons voulu moins des
longues traversées marines ouvertes, hors
de vue du terrain pendant les heures, qui
étaient souvent très assommantes. Il était
tellement plus agréable de pagayer près
de la côte, en appréciant les paysages
côtiers fascinants et de rencontrer
régulièrement la faune.
Nous avons aussi voulu continuer le fait de
pagayer de rivière et continuer à
promouvoir et soutenir la Campagne
d’Approche de Rivière. Nous avons parlé à
beaucoup de personnes le long du défi de
Passage Intérieur, en incluant des membres
des communautés des premières nations. Ils
ne pouvaient pas croire que quelques
eaux en Angleterre étaient privées et
avaient restreint l’approche. L’Angleterre
et le Pays de Galles sont les seuls pays dans
le monde qui font marcher la législation
bizarre et démodée qui restreint
l’approche publique aux fleuves sur une
échelle si grande.
Ainsi, pour 2010, ceux-ci sont nos défisFaire de Kayak autour de la Malte.
Comme avec l’Île de Wight, nous avons
voulu d’inclure une circumnavigation. Nous
avons reçu un invitation des “Aventures de
Côte Robustes” (basé en Malte), et ce Défi
a déjà été accompli.
En faisant du canoë le Fleuve Yukon - Nous
avons été incapables de nous débarrasser
de l’attraction de la région sauvage de
l’Alaska et projeter de revenir pour
connaître plus de côté sauvage d’Alaska,
aussi bien que la région Yukon, cette fois le
fait de faire du canoë de rivière et après le
trajet des prospecteurs le long du Fleuve
Yukon.
De John O’ Groats aux Iles d’Orkney – le
fait de pagayer marin écossais est
simplement étourdissant et l’Orkneys
fournira une grande destination, à la fin
d’une traversée de haute mer très
exposée.
De l’Ecosse à l’Irlande, via Jura et le
tourbillon Corryvreckin – l’idée du fait de
pagayer en Irlande a été là pendant
quelque temps. Et nous avons cru que nous
pourrions aussi pagayer à travers le
troisième tourbillon le plus grand dans le
monde le long de la voie.
Londres à Marrakesh – nous aimons l’idée
du fait de pagayer en Afrique, mais sans
assez de temps pagayer entièrement, nous
avons décidé d’inclure le cyclisme dans le
mélange. Ce défi impliquera plus de 2,000
miles de kayaking et le cyclisme. Le fait de
pagayer les détroits de Gibraltar et en
posant sur les côtes du Maroc sera sans
doute une expérience inoubliable.

appreciation

Scout leader Ömer K.
Şölen has gone
home after many
accomplishments in
the development of
Sea
Guiding/Scouting in
Turkey.
Omer was born in
Istanbul in 1924,
attended elementary school in Aydin, and
lyceum in Izmir Province. He was invested in
Scouting in 1933. He graduated from Gazi
Higher Education School with a BA degree
in 1947, and worked in several schools in
Iskenderun and Kayseri. He began to work
at the National Police Academy in 1965
and retired in 1981.
He was a teacher of physical education
and sports. He started sport clubs in the
schools where he taught and founded
strong Guide and Scout Groups, especially
his work for a Sea Guide/Scout Group in
Iskenderun Lyceum. He became a Troop
leader in 1941, and in 1963 became a
leader trainer and
ran national
training courses
up to 1965.
He organized
improvements
and development
in Sea Scouting,
beginning in 1990
with a Sea Scout
Leaders’ Course
at Iskenderun,
based at the
Guiding/Scouting
training facility, and on the nearby beach
of the naval base, with support of local
Commander. By arrangement with the
European Region Office, Eoghan Lavelle
from Ireland was on the team for this
course. Some thirty leaders trained in Sea
Scouting.
Later Omar ran Annual Sea Guide/Scout
Camps at Izmir, and also trained many
more Leaders in three consecutive camps
in 1991-1993. He ran his last annual Sea
Guiding/Scouting camp in 2004. These
camps still continue, mainly in Dardanelles
area, with leaders that he trained.
We sent him home on 29 Ocak 2010 at
noon time at Ankara Kocatepe mosque,
with student groups from Kayseri Lyceum
and his Guides and Scouts from
everywhere.
He is survived by his wife and son.

Ömer K. Şölen, responsible Scout, est mort,
après beaucoup d’accomplissements dans
le développement du Scoutisme Marin en
Turquie.
Omer est né à Istanbul (1924) Il a assisté à
l’école primaire dans Aydin et plus tard au
lycée dans la province d’Izmir. Il a été
investi dans le Scoutisme en 1933. Il a
terminé les études à l’École
d’Enseignement supérieur Gazi avec le
degré BA (1947)
et a travaillé dans
plusieurs écoles
dans Iskenderun
et Kayseri. Il a
commencé à
travailler à
l’Académie
Nationale de La
Police en 1965 et
a pris sa retraite
en 1981.
Il était profeseur
d’éducation
physique et des Sports. Il a créé des clubs
sportifs dans les écoles où il a travaillé, et a
fondé des Groupes forts de Scoutisme,
surtout son travail pour un Groupe de
Scoutisme Marin dans le Lyceum
d’Iskenderun.
Il est devenu un chef de Troupe en 1941. et
en 1963 est devenu entraîneur des chefs et

a dirigé des cours d’entraînement
nationaux jusqu’en 1965. Il a organisé des
améliorations et le développement dans
Scoutisme Marin, en commençant par un

Responsables Marins à Iskenderun, basé à
la facilité d’entraînement Guide/Scout, et
sur la plage proche de la base navale,
avec le soutien du Commandant local.
environ trente chefs se sont entraînés dans
Scouting Marin. Eoghan Lavelle de
l’Association Scout d’Irlande était dans
l’équipe pour ce cours selon l’arrangement
avec le Bureau du Région européen,
Plus tard, Omar a dirigé des Camps Annuels
de Guidisme/Scoutisme Marin à Izmir et a
aussi entraîné beaucoup plus des Chefs
dans trois camps consécutifs dans
1991-1993. Il a dirigé son dernier camp
annuel de Guidisme/Scoutisme Marin en
2004. Ces camps continuent toujours,
surtout dans la Région Dardanelles, avec
les chefs qu’il a entraîné.
Nous avons fait nos adieux à Omer à 29
Ocak 2010 au temps de midi à la mosquée
de Kocatepe en Ankara, avec les groupes
d’étudiants du lycée de Kayseri, et de ses
Guides et Scouts de tous côtés
Sa femme et son fils lui survivent.
Accident on-board UK Sea Cadet
training ship TS ROYALIST
The Editors of Euronaut wish to record, with
deep sadness, the tragic death of a Sea
Cadet, aged 14 years, on board the U.K.
sail training brig, TS Royalist, after a fall from
the rigging on Sunday, 2nd May.
Our deepest sympathy is extended to the
family and friends of the cadet who so
sadly lost his life, and also to the Sea Cadet
Corps in general.

Les Rédacteurs d’Euronaut veulent
enregistrer, avec la tristesse profonde, la
mort tragique d’un Cadet Marin, de 14 ans,
à bord le voilier britannique, TS Royalist,
après une chute du gréement, dimanche,
le 2 mai.
Notre sympathie la plus profonde est
prolongée à la famille et aux amis du
cadet qui ainsi a malheureusement perdu
sa vie, et aussi au Corps des Cadets Marins
en général.
