The Bell Tower
The bell tower of the Church of Saint Jean-Baptiste
offers a panoramic view of the town of Bourbourg
and surrounding countryside. The 50 bells chime automatically, or by the pulls of the bell-ringer, marking
the rhythm of the lives of people living in the city of
Gédéon.

Brouckerque: Heritage Village accreditation
The Les Pays de Flandre region introduced the new
‘Heritage Village’ accreditation in 2009. This accreditation aims to promote tourist circuits that showcase and preserve the heritage status of buildings,
landscapes and local people throughout the area’s
remarkable villages. It encourages visitors to explore
its rich local culture and history.
Once a marshland, the Brouckerque lowlands are
located in Flandre Maritime. Criss-crossed with waterways and ditches, they are home to typical buildings made from sandstone. The heritage circuit is
currently being drawn up.

Abbey of Watten
Archery Museum
Mountain ‘s mill
The abbey was founded in 1097,
under the name of ‘Notre Dame du
Mont de Watten’.
Classified as a Historic Monument,
its history, fortifications and site
can be explored in the summer via
a nature trail along the mountain
path.
Dedicated to vertical pole archery,
a variation of the sport which is
typical to the Flanders and Artois
regions, La Maison des Archers tells
you the history of vertical archery
from its origins to the present day.
This stone mill dates back to 1731
and was built on the site of an old
wooden mill using materials taken
from the former abbey.

There are 116 steps up to the lighthouse, which dominates the seaside resort, with its fantastic views over
Gravelines and surrounding areas! An exhibition traces

pontoon and fresh water point are
available to use free of charge.
People living in both fortress towns
feel great affection for this service,
which takes passengers from
one riverbank to the other! This
free shuttle has been connecting
Grand and Petit-Fort-Philippe for
almost 15 years.
Make the most of the quality
nautical infrastructure available at
the 3rd largest marina on the Côte
d’Opale. The marina has more than
450 mooring rings for welcoming

permanent exhibition, «Estampes Collection» will take

Discover different species of migrating birds from
observation points situated along the walkways all over
this 20 hectare area, which was created to encourage the
birds to stop and reproduce here.

Millam ponds
Located on land that is now restored and managed
to encourage biodiversity, these ponds are the only
remaining refuge known in Flanders for ‘Hyla Arborea’
(European tree frog), an endangered and protected
species. This site is also home to 19 species of dragonflies
and around 70 species of migrating birds.
This protected site is only accessible via nature walks hosted by the
Yserhouck association.
The site is visible on the St Mildrede walking circuit.

Platier d’Oye Nature Reserve
If you are a nature-lover or walker, don’t miss Platier
d’Oye! Wet grasslands, paths bordered by wild roses and
sea buck-thorn, puddle geese, observation points, long
beaches of fine sand... You will go from one discovery to
the next in this 300 hectare nature reserve.

The Aa claypit
Clay lies underneath the grasslands! In this area now
classified as a Protected Nature Park, clay was once
extracted to produce the beautiful typical Northern
bricks. But it was soon reclaimed by nature, to the
delight of anyone who appreciates high quality natural
environments. The flower-filled grasslands are home
to the discreet Grass Vetchling and as well as several
orchids. Waterfowl love the tranquility of the lake where
the Eurasian bittern is regularly spotted.
