SCHOOL TERM DATES 2015-2016 Term 4 2015 12 October – 18 December Term 1 2016 1 February – 10 April Term 2 2016 26 April – 1 July Term 3 2016 18 July – 23 September I would like to acknowledge the following students for their recent achievements. In the ICAS competitions, George Kelleher received a High Distinction in English and Elise Kelleher a High Distinction in Science. In both cases these students were invited to a special presentation at the University of NSW. Sam Parkinson and Zackery Needham were named among the top 26 performers within Australia in the Australian Informatics Olympian Competition. Only four students in the ACT received this honour with two were from Telopea. Congratulations also to Ines Kusen, who achieved third place in the National Final of the Young ICT Explorers Competition in Sydney recently. These students are just a few from a long list of excellent achievements at Telopea. A remarkable effort. Next week Kerrie Blain and Emmanuel Texier will visit New Caledonia to set up partnerships with two schools with which our students will be exchanging next year and into the future. These schools are Collège Baudoux for Year 6 and Lycée Jules Garnier for Years 10 and 11. We have a number of upcoming events at this busy time of year. Your participation is always encouraged and appreciated and reminds our students of the ongoing partnerships between teacher and parents. Events include: Volunteer’s Morning tea on Tuesday, 15th December, from 8:30 in the school’s main Common room. Bien cordialement, Tom Kobal Principal adjoint TOP Page 2 of 14 SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENTS You may have heard the report of the Expert Panel Review on Students with Complex Needs and Challenging Behaviours. The Government response was recently released. The Government will be acting on all of the recommendations in the report. The Expert Panel led by Professor Tony Shaddock recognised that the ACT has strong schools systems and achieves outstanding results on many measures. The Review rightly draws attention to the commitment, expertise and good practice that is evident in many schools. It also identified challenges for schools in supporting students with complex needs and challenging behaviours. This is an important issue for all of us in the Canberra community and we will be working with other schools and services to build on the great work already being done. There will be further opportunities to allow families and students to discuss the report and Government response, however I encourage you to discuss the report with any of the school’s senior executive staff should you have any questions. The report and the www.det.act.gov.au Government response can be found on the Education and Training Directorate website: BYOD By Tom Spollard Device Use in Classrooms for Term 4 Telopea Park School is currently implementing a soft launch BYOD program for students in year 6 to year 10. The model of implementation is the mixed model, with Chromebooks being the recommended device of choice. Students may use other devices provided that those devices have a minimum 10" screen, six hour battery charge, are readily able to connect to the school's Wi-Fi and include a touch type keyboard. Please note that students will not be able to change their devices at school. Students are encouraged to bring these devices for current use for the remainder of this year's program. Please note that mobile phones are not acceptable devices for use in the classroom. We are currently consulting with the Directorate about the inclusion of information in the school's webpage that will assist in the purchasing of devices for 2016. Click here for more information: https://goo.gl/1uoSQO . Cyber Safety Committee Expressions of interest are called from members of the Telopea Park School community to participate in a cyber safety committee. The scope of this committee will be to develop an implementation plan for recommendation that guides students at Telopea Park School towards safe, enjoyable online experiences and that encourages appropriate, safe and acceptable online use. Expressions of interest can be sent to [email protected] . Please add "Cyber Safety Committee " as the subject header. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________ HIGH SCHOOL ANNOUNCEMENTS Career Development …. for Year 9 & 10 students The end of the school year maybe in sight, however Telopea Park School's work experience program will continue to function. Both Year 9 and Year 10 students can seek a WEX placement until the end if the 2015 school year. Work experience placements will resume early February 2016. One of the best work experience opportunities is offered by ACT Government t Health. Students can seek a 4 day placement in medicine, nursing, physiotherapy, podiatry, occupational therapy, radiology, biomedical engineering, medical physics, dentistry, IT, management and clerical. These placements are only open to students in Year 10 and are highly competitive to secure. Work Experience placements with ACT Health for 2016 are open now. This means that students currently in Year 9 can complete the application form and submit it for a 2016 placement. If any current Year 9 students are interested in a Health career pathway, I highly recommend they complete the application forms and give it to me to submit before the end of the 2015 school year. Page 3 of 14 Students need to complete 4 forms: Application form, confidentiality form, placement form and fulfil all immunisation requirements. I have attached all forms to this newsletter and students may also obtain the forms from me. At a recent Careers Education conference, contemporary research indicated that many job opportunities in the future will be in Health. I have been most impressed with the number of Year 9 and Year 10 students who have taken up work experience placements during 2015. To date 70 students have had a placement and three times as many students have investigated a placement, but were unsuccessful. Please do not hesitate to contact me, if you have any questions regarding your student undertaking a work experience placement. Susan Alexander Telopea Park School Career Development Officer Email : [email protected] Phone: 0407110853 SECONDARY NEWS Mathematics Matters In years past, the Canberra Mathematical Association awarded schools with the title of “Maths Active School”. The awards were given at various levels, based on the activity of students in extra-curricular mathematical pursuits, as well as the activity of teachers in professional pursuits outside of the classroom. Based on the participation of students and staff at Telopea Park School this year, there is no doubt that we would have been ranked as a Gold standard Maths Active School, if the award was still in existence. Students at Telopea are keen participants in the large number of mathematics-based competitions that are held each year, such as the Australian Mathematics Competition, ICAS Maths, the Maths Challenge for Young Australians (MCYA - Challenge & Enrichment stages) and the Australian Informatics Olympiad, to name a few. Some of these competitions are particularly difficult. Students gain a lot through just participating in these competitions, and it is a bonus if they achieve a Credit, Distinction or High Distinction award. The number of highly successful students this year meant that we had to limit the number of students who received recognition at our assembly to awardees with multiple High Distinctions and/or Distinctions across all competitions. Space limitations in this newsletter mean that the full list of awardees will be provided via the school website. However, I would like to highlight a few outstanding performances. Congratulations are extended to Shiyamar Sivapatham of Year 8 (HD in both AMC & ICAS, Distinction in the MCYA, Credit in the Tournament of Towns) Shiyamar also achieved the Prudence Award in the AMC, with a score of 25 consecutive correct answers out of 30. Zac Needham of Year 9 also has achieved multiple HDs in the AMC and ICAS, Credits in the Tournament of Towns and Australian Intermediate Mathematics Olympiad and a Silver certificate in the Australian Informatics Olympiad. On the basis of their performances, Zac, along with Sam Parkinson, also in Year 9, have been invited to attend the Australian Informatics Olympiad School of Excellence in December. This exclusive event is part of the identification process for selecting the Australian Informatics Olympiad team who will compete in Russia in July 2016. Zac and Sam are two of four participants from the ACT. We wish both boys all the best. Other students who performed exceptionally well this year were Ranusha Nanayakkara of Year 7, Thomas Fearn and Gordon Lum of Year 8 and Tze-Ming Lim of Year 9. Numeracy Day – Maths Challenge. We held our annual Year 7 Numeracy Day Challenge in early Term 4 this year. Once again students enjoyed participating as an entire year group in some recreational mathematics. Competition was strong between all the teams but once again Mathematics was the real winner! Thanks to the assistance of our Year 10 Peer Support leaders, who encouraged and inspired their group to have fun as they participated in Maths. Enrichment I have over the last few years offered Mathematics based recreational activities for Thursday Enrichment, such as “Maths Competitions for Fun” and “Letters & Numbers”, both of which were well-received. During Term 3, a small but keen group of Year 8 students used the opportunity to work on their entries for the University of Wollongong “Maths via Digital Media” Competition. Students were required to produce a short (3 minute) video, explaining some aspect of their mathematics curriculum to their peer group or younger. Students had to call on their skills in maths, creative arts as well as technical digital media skills. One entry was selected to represent our school. Unfortunately, they did not win; however, the final result was most entertaining and very commendable. I would hope that students would consider participating in this competition in future. Tutoring Occasionally, we receive enquiries about tutors for maths. May we suggest that in the first instance, students be encouraged to make use of the coaching available through their Mathletics account. Short videos step students through concepts that may need reinforcing or consolidating. This is good use for the $25 per year investment already made. Page 4 of 14 A second suggestion is for parents to consult the Position Paper on tutoring prepared by the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers (AAMT). The paper presents advice on a range of issues that should be considered for those thinking of engaging a tutor or attending a tutoring franchise. Associated with the Paper are a number of support documents. The url is: http://www.aamt.edu.au/content/download/25488/353109/file/Position_statement_tutoring.pdf Please be aware that it is school policy that staff of Telopea Park School are not available to tutor students of the school. Regards, Jurek Paradowski, Executive Teacher Mathematics PRIMARY NEWS With three weeks left of the 2015 school year, we have been busily organising all the end of year events and celebrations. It has been a wonderful year full of exciting teaching and learning. Kindergarten 2016 Orientation Mornings From Tuesday 24 November to Friday 27 November, we warmly welcomed our new Kindergarten 2016 students and parents to our school. While the parents took care of some administration, the students enjoyed their first experience of ‘big school’ with the Kindergarten teachers in the classrooms and playground. Their excited, happy faces showed their enthusiasm to become part of the Telopea Park School community and we are looking forward to seeing them all again next year. Volunteers’ Breakfast Each day, many members of the broader school community work in our school to assist with a great number of different tasks. We have people who come and read with our students in Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2; people who give their time at school events and sports carnivals; people who accompany our teachers and students on excursions; as well as many other wonderful deeds. They give their time and share their talents to support us in so many ways. They are our ‘quiet achievers’ who often go unrecognised in the community, but without them, we would not be able to carry out many important tasks. We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all those people who help us in any way by having a Volunteers’ Breakfast in their honour. This will take place on Tuesday 15 December from 8.30am in the Common Room near the front of the school. Anyone who has volunteered in any way in the school this year is warmly invited and encouraged to come and be thanked in person. Please RSVP to [email protected] by Friday 11 December. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 (K-2) Concert One of the nicest events in the school year is the K-2 Concert. This special event will be held on Thursday 3 December (Week 8) between 11.15am and 12.30pm in the School Hall. The students in lower Primary would love to see a large audience in the hall to watch them perform, as they have been working hard with their class teachers and the music teacher, Susan Cribb, to prepare some lovely items (they are also extremely cute!)The gold coin entry donations collected at the door are used to further enhance the music program so we thank you in advance for your generosity. We look forward to seeing you there. Science activities The students in Year 5, under the supervision of teacher Valerie Sharpe, have been running rotational science groups for students from Kindergarten to Year 6. They have set up activities based on topics such as; Acids and Bases, Eye Spy (colour and the eye), Sports Science, The Flooding River (study of the meniscus) and Environmental Science (e.g. exploding colours, the water glider etc.) This has given the Year 5 students leadership experience as well as a keen interest in Science. Stationery Lists for 2016 We have begun a new relationship with OfficeMax; who will be providing the stationery and book packs for all students in Primary next year. Due to their broad range of distributors, they are able to offer competitive prices to families and generous incentives to the school. Unlike previous years, where packs were collected from the school near the end of the January holidays, OfficeMax offers free postage directly to your home if the orders are placed by a certain date. The lists are due to arrive in the school shortly and will be sent home with students. Please read the special conditions to enjoy free delivery. First Aid Courses The students have been learning about First Aid over the past week. A trainer from St. John’s First Aid has been coming to the school to provide basic training. I must admit that I was startled by one student who was quite heavily bandaged one afternoon. They reassured me that they had not been in a serious accident; it was just part of their First Aid training. That was a relief! Thank you to Maria Magdic for organising these valuable classes. Library Books and Home Readers Any students with outstanding borrowed library books will be receiving a list shortly. Please encourage your children to check for any home readers that have not been returned to school as well. Thank you for your support in maintaining our valuable resources. Swimming Program for students in Years 2, 3 and 4 In line with ACT Public School requirements, a swimming program has been booked for all students in Years 2, 3 and 4. All students are expected to attend; regardless of their swimming ability. Please remember to complete the online data that is required. All information is included in the notes sent home with students. Semester 2 Reports Teachers are busily completing assessment tasks in preparation for the Semester 2 Reports. The reports will be sent home with students on Thursday 17 December. If your child is not going to be at school on that day, please advise the Primary Office where you would like reports posted to. Any reports not posted or collected before the end of Term 4, Friday 18 December, will be kept in the Primary Office for collection in 2016. This is a very important meeting where the Treasurer will announce the funds raised from the recent Fete and the total amount of funding that we are able to contribute to the school for next year. In the past, funds have been allocated for French and English language readers, French culture resources for the school library, K-10 awards, playground projects, interactive whiteboards for classrooms, as well as science and physical education equipment. Last year funding was also allocated towards a flexible learning space for student support services. Come along if you are keen to see how our hard-earned funds are to be spent next year! FETE and RAFFLE SPONSOR APPRECIATION In the last Telopea Topics, we thanked those volunteers who coordinated and manned stalls throughout the event. This time, we Page 10 of 14 want to send a whole-hearted note of appreciation to those businesses who provided us with much-needed donations for our food stalls this year. Booking a holiday? Flights for Telopea funds We have an ongoing agreement with Manuka Flight Centre whereby 1% of all Telopea Park School bookings made through Manuka Fight Centre will go back to the school. This is open to students, teachers, friends and family, so please ask to speak to Maddie (who is their French speaking consultant) and mention the Telopea arrangement when making your booking. Buy shoes and help raise money for Telopea If you are buying school or sports shoes from The Athlete's Foot, a $5 donation will come back to our school! This is a major fundraiser for our school in 2015. What? Any shoes for anyone in your family: Sport, School or Casual Where? The Athlete's Foot - Canberra Centre, Tuggeranong Hyperdome, Westfield Woden or Westfield Belconnen. How? When purchasing, just tell the staff at Athlete's Foot that you are from our school. Then every pair of shoes you purchase will generate a $5 donation back to the School. Plus it also contributes towards a reward voucher for your family as well.
