“The wildflowers were abundant. I could
hear the woodpeckers, the chickadees and
the nattering of the magpies. The Saskatoon
berries were just making up their mind to flower.
Mallards and Canada geese were frantically guarding their youngsters from the Bald Eagles soaring
above. People in Calgary are so friendly. As I rested
on the bench, taking in the blue-blue of the sky,
people would join me and we would chat about

You and Value
I can’T say I’ve sampled all of the restaurants, attractions, festivals and other travel
experiences voted “best values” by thousands
of our readers in our third annual Value
awards issue. What I can say definitively is
that based on the ones I have, it is clear that
our readers appreciate the true essence of
a great deal—that the cheapest option isn’t
always the best choice when it comes to money well spent in
a WestJet destination.
Take Mama’s Fish House, tucked on Maui’s north shore and
the top-voted restaurant in the U.s. by our readers. Entrées start
at about Us$40 and bounce from there, but guests dine a conch
shell’s throw from a palm-ensconced private beach with views
of the infinite Pacific beyond, and where each locally caught fish
served includes the name of the Hawaiian who caught it. Impeccable service and a drink list that belies the restaurant’s isolated
location round out what our readers declared the best way to
spend your money on a meal in the U.s.
Our Value awards package is full of equally unforgettable
crowd-sourced gems that have enhanced our readers’ vacations
and business trips for years. as such, we’ve highlighted repeat
winners in each of our categories, organized by region starting
on pg. 35 and spanning the WestJet destination network, from
canada and the U.s., to Mexico and the caribbean.
Enjoy this very special issue created and inspired by the
million-plus WestJet guests who turn to up! magazine every
month for local secrets and new takes on well-trodden routes in
their favourite destinations. Better yet, go to valueawards.ca
to share experiences, attractions and hotspots from your travels
that offer great value. your fellow WestJet guests will appreciate it, and you can win one of three sweet prizes from WestJet
Vacations. This year’s grand prize winners include Matt Murdoch who won an all-expenses paid stay at the Bellagio in Las
Vegas, while sharon Howe will enjoy the sun in the Gran Bahia
Principe resort in Jamaica.
congratulations to them, and best of luck to you next year.
Happy trails.

Putting the "care"
in care-antee
On behalf Of more than 7,600 WestJetters across
Canada, thank you for flying with us. as WestJet
owners, we are committed to offering you a worldclass guest experience at an affordable price.
hundreds of WestJetters recently shared their
personal pledges (or as we call them, care-antees)
to a great guest experience on youtube.com/
westjet. Whether we’re greeting you in person or
over the Internet, the message is the same: we
appreciate your support and we are going to do
our best to offer you a fantastic travel experience.
When our airline first took to the sky 14 years
ago, WestJet owners made a collective commitment to providing a caring travel experience—
and that commitment is as strong as ever.
each of the guest care-antees that we have
put in writing on westjet.com is based on our
promise to always care. Whether you’re travelling
for business or leisure, you can count on caring
WestJetters to do their best to ensure you enjoy
the journey—care-anteed. I hope you enjoy the
caring service on board your flight today. If you
have feedback about your WestJet experience,

Think of Disney’s California Adventure’s
new World of Color “water spectacular”
as a roller-coaster for the sedentary. After
all, the Imagineers who designed it do.
“It’s media blended with magical waters,” raves Steve Davison, VP of Parades
and Spectaculars, part of the Walt Disney
Imagineering Creative Entertainment division. What can only be described as the
best water fountain ever, World of Color
is the third attraction launched as part of
the US$1.4-billion overhaul of the grounds
that’s scheduled to be completed by
2012. With 1,200 nimble, powerful nozzles
capable of bursts of up to 200 feet as a
canvas, Disney unveiled an unprecedented
“kaleidoscopic” projection system that includes fire, fog lasers and surround sound

Where to find the best
Bermuda fish chowder
on the island
Lobster Pot Restaurant
Since 1973, chowder devotees
have come here for a cup or
bowl of soup with a broth that’s
the colour of milk chocolate and
fortified—amply—with rum.
The décor, featuring lobster
traps and underwater treasures
like coral branches and seashells,
make it clear that seafood reigns
here (6 Bermudiana Rd., Hamilton; 441-292-6898).
Fresco’s
This eatery takes a different approach to its soup by venturing
into stew territory with ample
chunks of rock fish. Get there
before your reservation time
and pull up a chair at the wine
bar that’s reminiscent of a
Tuscan villa: all trailing vines
and sun-drenched shades of
gold and red (2 Chancery Lane,
Hamilton; 441-295-5058).

Bermuda fish chowder at Tamarisk Restaurant
in the Cambridge Beaches Resort
National Secret
30
Bermuda-RAISED chef Keith De Shields breaks into a broad
smile as he recalls the aroma of Bermuda fish chowder simmering in the family kitchen of his youth. His father would
often stand at the stove, dropping fish bones into a huge pot.
“That’s the secret,” De Shields says. “For good chowder,
you have to have homemade fish stock.” But that’s just the
beginning of creating the island nation’s much-loved and
often-tinkered-with dish.
There’s the addition of finely chopped vegetables, fragrant
spices and the local white fish, followed by the slow mixing of
ingredients over a moderate flame. And, right before the soup
meets the bowl, the catalysts that bring it all together: a dousing
of hot pepper sauce and a shot of dark rum. That’s the way
De Shields makes it for guests of the Cambridge Beaches
Resort & Spa: no modern reinvention; no short cuts.
“I didn’t see the need to change it,” says De Shields.
It’s a version that would be right at home in the early
1600s when the first British colonists arrived in Bermuda.
The chowder the colonists prepared left locals unsatisfied,
so they quickly made it their own. It was also an inexpensive
way to fill bellies. Readily available vegetables and spices
blended perfectly with leftover fish meat.
It’s a streamlined efficiency that today is a point of fiery
national pride, as uncomplicated as it is delicious.
Tamarisk Restaurant
Overlooking the glittering blue
waters of Mangrove Bay, this
fine-dining restaurant presents
chowder so delectable you
almost forget about its great
views. Swimming with fine pieces
of wahoo and crowned by fresh
flat-leaf parsley, it arrives steaming to the table in a deep white
bowl, perfect for showing off its
exquisitely red broth (Cambridge
Beaches Resort & Spa, Somerset;
441-234-0331).
White Fish
Local wahoo,
similar to king
fish, is the only
way to go. “It’s
not too fishy,
and it has a
light, delicate
flavour and its
firm flesh stands
up well in the
broth,” explains
De Shields. Bermudians take joy
in sport-fishing
for wahoo. It’s
plentiful in local
waters and puts
up a good fight
when being
reeled in—especially the bigger
75-pounders.
Gosling’s
Black Seal
Rum
Dating back to
1850s, this rum
was once bottled in reclaimed
champagne
bottles from the
British Officers’
Mess. Fermented from molasses in charred
oak barrels, it
has a lightly
sweet taste.
“Its roasted,
caramel flavours
add richness to
the broth when
added during
cooking,” says
De Shields.
Outerbridge’s
Original
Sherry Peppers Sauce
Since the 19th
century, the
British Royal
Navy added
hot peppers to
fortified sherry
to create an allpurpose seasoning. Now, it’s one
of the defining
ingredient for
the chowder,
thanks to its
fruity picante
bite. Order it online, or buy some
at the airport
before boarding
your flight (outerbridge.com).
Fresh
Tomatoes
Some versions
of the chowder
swap fresh tomatoes in favour
of ketchup,
but that’s just
wrong. Demand
the fresh stuff
to ensure the
customary
thickness and
the chowder’s
deep red colour.
And tomatoes
thrive in balmy
Bermuda, so no
self-respecting
restaurateur
should cut
corners here.
Bermuda
Onions
In 1616, early
British settlers
planted the first
onion and it’s
been thriving
since, captivating
local cooks with
its mild flavour
and sweetness.
The Bermuda
onion’s popularity grew among
visiting traders,
who began
exporting them.
Soon the island
became synonymous with
the bulb-shaped
vegetable, so
much so that
Bermudians
were nicknamed
“Onions.”

Canadians love to skate, bowl and bungee
jump. They love paralyzing roller-coaster flips,
show-boating sea lions and shopping. What
they don’t love is costly parking and frostbite.
So for the northernmost Canadian metropolis,
it just made sense to turn 48 city blocks into an
indoor cornucopia with 20,000 parking stalls,
800 stores, 110 eateries, 21 amusement park
rides and the world’s biggest indoor wave pool.
Of course being Canadian meant sharing, so 28
million visitors a year enjoy West Edmonton
Mall’s bounty, popping one off at the Wild
West Shooting Centre and seeing Public Enemy
at the Edmonton Event Centre in the same
hour; leaving nightclub-packed Bourbon Street
for Chinatown with a few steps onto an escalator; and winning big at the Palace Casino and
blowing it all on sweet, sticky crépes.
gEtting thErE WestJet flies to

—Omar Mouallem

some decisions to make before coming back

Back when Comox Valley cuisine was about as creative as a corned
beef sandwich, restaurateurs Trent McIntyre and Sandra Viney arrived
to open the Atlas Café. The goal was simple: offer up a delicious
menu reflecting the seaside farming character of Vancouver Island,
but infuse it with a hint of international flavour. They then paired
that with top-shelf service in a casual, warm space. It’s a winning
formula. Atlas celebrated its 15th anniversary this year and continues
to set the standard for dining in the Comox Valley. Starters like the
warm roasted beet salad with goat cheese basil terrine are only
outdone by entrées like the garlic- and herb-marinated lamb sirloin,
or fish tacos featuring seasonal catches and fruit salsa. A fresh menu
reflects the local abundance, whether it’s Baynes Sound oysters or
farm-raised chicken.
—Andrew Findlay

When you consider the fish at Hawaii’s most-lauded seafood restaurant
is often caught the same day it’s served, the name of the fisherman
is right there on the menu (which changes every day), and that the
greens are grown less than 10 km away in the maintenance manager’s
garden fertilized by the kitchen’s scraps, the US$48 mahi mahi entrée
starts looking like a bargain. And at Mama’s, a fish dish is never what
you expect—often stuffed full with lobster, crab and onions, then
baked to nuanced local perfection. To make it feel like an outright
bargain, be sure to reserve an oceanview table way in advance—and
sear it into your consciousness for eternity with a twilight seating.

Amid the choking jungle of the Yucatan Peninsula, ancient history
is immersive and interactive. Millennia-old limestone sentinels rise
out of the verdant canopy, none more impressive than those at
Chichen Itza, the site recently declared one of the New Seven
Wonders of the World, and the iconic symbol of the Mundo Maya.
Flashes of ancient brilliance are everywhere: the Kukulcan Pyramid’s
365 steps, one for every day of the year, or how a clap or yell is
echoed back 13 times in the ball court, still true to the Mayans’
reverence for their lucky numeral. With admission costing less
than US$10 to explore the site’s 15 square kms, goosebumps don’t
come any cheaper.
—Tom Gierasimczuk

Once upon a time, a five-star all-inclusive resort was an oxymoron.
That was until the Dominican Republic’s Gran Bahía Príncipe Punta
Cana opened. You check in and hit the beach—a half-kilometre
of alabaster sand and neon waters splattered with dinghies sporting tropical fish-coloured sails. You pass the free-form pool and the
thatched-roof beach bar. Here, royal palms share guard duty with
huts. Hibiscus scents the lush gardens, poincianas dressed lavishly
as debutantes dance in the breezes. Your room is a junior suite in a
pumpkin-painted, low-lying colonial building. Dinner tonight is Italian;
Japanese tomorrow; seafood the day after. There are seven restaurants, so you do the math. Your significant other scans the welcome
brochure in delight: spa, Pueblo Principe shopping, merengue lessons.
One of you notes the Nick Price designed golf course five minutes
away. Some resorts are pieds-á-terre for exploring the destination.
Others, like this Gran Bahía Principe, are their own destinations.
—Mark Stevens

HETHER IT’S THE JOKE by a winking
flight attendant or the enthusiastic
service that’s part of every WestJet
flight plan, you know that WestJetters
are different. They put themselves out
there for the common good.
And outside of the airports and WestJet offices
things are no different—the popular WestJet Cares for
Kids program proves it.
The company launched the initiative in 2007, with
a focus on children’s health and wellness. The overarching goal, then and now, is to build partnerships
and allow WestJetters to touch the lives of families in
the communities where they work.
WestJet provides the “gift of flight” in support of
the program’s nine national children’s health and
wellness charities, including Big Brothers Big Sisters
of Canada, Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada, CNIB,
Hope Air, Kids Help Phone, KidSport Canada, Missing
Children Society of Canada, Ronald McDonald House
Charities of Canada and Make-A-Wish Foundation of
Canada. In addition, WestJet works with children’s
hospitals and pediatric wards across the country
through the program.
Over the past three years, WestJet Cares for Kids
has grown into the company’s signature community
endeavour. In 2009, WestJet donated more than 6,600
flights worth the equivalent of $1.8 million. The charitable partners use these flights both to deliver community services and to raise funds through such things as
prize draws and silent auctions. In fact, WestJet flights
were used to fundraise $950,000 in 2009.
The numbers are impressive, but what’s most
remarkable about the program’s success is the eagerness of WestJetters to get involved personally. Their
energy and goodwill have grown the program into
much more than donated flights.
“WestJet employees have
become engaged volunteers
in their communities”
—Jennifer Ritter, Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada

KidSport Canada, Missing Children Society of Canada,
« WestJet a toujours accordé beaucoup

“WestJet has always been about people, and our investment in communities is no exception,” says Scott
Hartley, Community Marketing and Creative Services
at WestJet
“The WestJet Cares for Kids program allows WestJetters to help a lot of kids who have been in some very
tough situations. It’s a very emotional experience.”
Last March, WestJetters donned aprons and channelled their inner chefs by volunteering their time to
make home-cooked meals for the 200-plus families
being served at the time by the Ronald McDonald
House across Canada. Ronald McDonald House
provides accommodation for families of hospitalized
children who need a supportive place to stay while
the child undergoes treatment.
“Ronald McDonald House Charities of Canada is
thrilled to receive such strong support from WestJet,”
says Shelagh Barrett, the organization’s Executive
Director. “After a long day at the hospital, there is
nothing like a home-cooked meal for the families.”
In May, hundreds of WestJetters participated in the
Walk for Kids Help Phone in 51 cities across Canada,
in support of an agency that provides children with
anonymous and confidential professional counselling
24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
“The value of this support was priceless for an
organization that relies on our annual walk to raise
almost 30 per cent of our annual operating budget,”
says Kate Munoz, Kids Help Phone Regional Director
for Alberta and the Northwest Territories.
This September and October, WestJet will partner with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada on the
Passport to Success program, which gives young
boys and girls an inside look at how an airport works.
Children will be invited to tour 13 airports in WestJet
cities across the country, and WestJet pilots will travel
to host cities to speak to local Boys and Girls Clubs
about careers in the aviation industry.
“Passport to Success presents our children with a
remarkable educational opportunity and a chance to
be inspired by positive role models,” says Boys and
Girls Clubs President and CEO Pam Jolliffe.
And WestJet’s support of worthy causes doesn’t take
time off for Christmas. This holiday season, WestJetters across Canada will deliver thousands of toys to 29
children’s hospitals and pediatric wards in 27 cities as
part of the annual WestJet Cares for Kids Toy Drive.
WestJet Cares for Kids will continue to bring WestJetters from across the country together to use their
diverse talents to make a collective difference in their
communities.
“WestJet employees have become engaged volunteers in their communities through events, wish
granting, fundraising and more,” says Jennifer Ritter,
CEO of the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Canada,
which endeavours to make dreams come true for
children with life-threatening conditions. “WestJetters
continually go that extra mile to make Make-A-Wish
children and their families feel at ease and comfortable no matter what the circumstances.”
« Les employés de WestJet
s’investissent vraiment dans
leur communauté »
Except during an actual seat sale.
Then it’s a seat sale sale.

What’s so neat about our all-Boeing fleet?
Trop Boeing pour être vrai?
WestJet’s entire fleet consists of Boeing Next-Generation 737
aircraft. In fact, our desire to provide a consistent and great
guest experience is a major reason why we use our 600-, 700and 800-series aircraft.
It’s more affordable and efficient to operate a single fleet type.
By keeping costs low, we can care-antee that we will offer our
guests great value.
An inquiring-minded WestJetter once asked our Technical
Operations team if we could modify a Boeing Next-Generation
737-600 into a 700-series aircraft. The answer is that turning
a Boeing Next-Generation 737-600 into a 700 is like turning
a sedan into a stretch limo. With aircraft, certification issues
make it too expensive to consider that type of modification.
That said, if it was the last one on Earth and you absolutely
had to do it, it could be done.
Fast fact: According to Boeing’s website, the 737 is the
world’s most successful commercial airliner.
