The skilled trades and technology sectors are essential parts of
Canada’s economy, and the need for highly skilled workers in these
areas continues to increase.

Participants in these varied and challenging Skills/Compétences Canada
competitions are an important part of the Government of Canada’s goal
to create jobs and promote economic growth and long-term prosperity.
We must ensure Canadians have the skills they need to contribute to
a strong and vibrant workforce, both today and into the future.
Les participants aux concours variés et stimulants de Skills/Compétences
Canada jouent un rôle important dans l’atteinte de l’objectif du

Our government is investing in training programs and providing tax
credits and grants to encourage young people to launch careers in
the trades. Apprenticeship grants, for example, offer up to $4,000 to
apprentices who complete their training in designated Red Seal trades.
And, in Budget 2014, the Government of Canada announced the new
Canada Apprentice Loan.
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Skills Canada National
Competition. This is an important milestone, and you can take pride
in knowing you are inspiring other young Canadians to discover
promising careers where they, too, can begin to realize their potential.
I would like to congratulate all the competitors, who have shown
exceptional ability in your respective fields, and wish you all the best
in the future.

Notre gouvernement investit dans les programmes de formation et
offre des crédits d’impôt et des subventions aux jeunes afin de les
inciter à entreprendre une carrière dans les métiers. Par exemple,

leur formation dans un métier désigné Sceau rouge peuvent recevoir
jusqu’à 4 000 $. En outre, dans le budget de 2014, le gouvernement

The first ever Skills Canada National Competition (SCNC) was held in
Hamilton in 1994 and we are excited to be bringing back this national
event to Ontario for its 20th anniversary!
Au nom du conseil d’administration de Skills/Compétences Canada,
je vous souhaite la bienvenue aux Olympiades canadiennes des métiers
et des technologies 2014. Comme les toutes premières Olympiades
ont eu lieu à Hamilton en 1994, nous sommes ravis d’organiser de
nouveau cette compétition nationale en Ontario à l’occasion de son
20e anniversaire !

Every year, this event keeps getting bigger and better and it is my hope
that one day it obtains the same level of support and recognition as do
the Olympics. I believe that this would help even more young people
and parents consider skilled trade and technology careers as viable
and meaningful options.
Putting on a large-scale event like SCNC requires the support and
dedication of many groups of people. Skills/Compétences Canada is
tremendously grateful to the National Technical Committee, the
Executive Committee, the SCC National Board of Directors, all of our
on-site volunteers and our staff.
We are also immensely thankful for the opportunities provided to us
through our funding partner Employment and Social Development
Canada, our many sponsors, education partners and suppliers.

les jeunes et leurs parents seraient ainsi plus portés à envisager une
carrière dans les métiers spécialisés et la technologie comme une
option viable et enrichissante.
L’organisation d’un évènement de grande envergure comme les
Olympiades nécessite le soutien et le dévouement de nombreux
groupes de personnes. Skills/Compétences Canada est très
reconnaissant de la contribution du Comité technique national,
du Comité exécutif, des membres de son Conseil d’administration
national, de tous les bénévoles sur place et de son personnel.

President and CEO, Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers
The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) is pleased
to support this exciting event that brings together trade and technology
students from across Canada to compete in more than 40 skilled trades.
CAPP represents the upstream Canadian oil and natural gas industry,
which currently supports about 550,000 jobs across Canada. Among
these jobs are skilled trades of all types – electricians, pipefitters,
mechanics, welders, technicians and specialists – just to name a few.
Over the next decade, it is estimated the industry will sustain an annual
average of one million jobs coast-to-coast. About 20 per cent are
direct jobs in exploration and production, oil and gas services and
pipeline operations. Almost half are jobs in construction, manufacturing,
transportation and warehousing. The remaining 30 per cent also
include many skilled trades positions.
The Skills Canada National Competition is a great opportunity to help
meet the urgent need to train and develop more skilled trade workers
in Canada, and to work together to provide secure, well-paying jobs
that fuel our economy and keep Canadians moving.

L’Association canadienne des producteurs pétroliers (ACPP) est
heureuse de soutenir cette manifestation passionnante, durant
laquelle des élèves des secteurs des métiers et des technologies
de partout au Canada se livrent concurrence dans au-delà de
40 domaines spécialisés.
L’ACPP représente le secteur canadien du pétrole et du gaz naturel
en amont, qui soutient actuellement environ 550 000 emplois à travers
le pays. Électricien, tuyauteur, mécanicien, soudeur, technicien,
spécialiste : voilà quelques-unes des catégories de gens de métier
œuvrant dans cette industrie.
On estime qu’au cours de la prochaine décennie, le secteur appuiera
annuellement un million d’emplois en moyenne d’un océan à l’autre.
Environ 20 p. 100 d’entre eux seront des emplois directs dans
l’exploration et la production, les services pétroliers et gaziers et
l’exploitation de pipelines. La construction, la fabrication, le transport
et l’entreposage seront responsables de près de la moitié des emplois,
et de nombreux métiers spécialisés seront nécessaires pour les
30 p. 100 restants.
Les Olympiades canadiennes des métiers et des technologies
constituent une occasion en or d’aider à répondre à l’urgent besoin
de former davantage de gens de métier spécialisés au pays et de
perfectionner leurs compétences ainsi que de collaborer pour
fournir des emplois sûrs et bien rémunérés qui stimulent notre
économie et font progresser nos compatriotes.

UA Canada would like to welcome everyone to the 2014 Skills Canada
National Competition being held in Toronto, Ontario. We are funding
this event as a presenting sponsor this year as a continuation of our
three year commitment to the future of Canada’s youth. We believe in
preparing our new workforce to start a career in the piping industry as
apprentices and future journeypersons because Canada was built with
the skills of these workers and cannot progress without skilled trades.

For those of you who do not know us, the United Association has been
in business in North America as a union organization since 1889. Our
members are primarily tradespeople including steamfitter-pipefitters,
plumbers, high pressure welders, and heating ventilation air conditioning
refrigeration (HVACR) technicians, sprinklerfitters, instrumentation
technicians, and non destructive technicians. We also now have the
plumbers union from Australia as part of our organization and we are
growing steadily here in Canada. We know what is needed for the future
of our country in the way of skilled apprentices and journeypersons and
we know they will be in great demand. A career in the pipe trades is a
future you can count on, and will create a better quality of life for you and
your family.
We know you will enjoy your time at the Skills/Compétences Canada
event and we are looking forward to talking to all of the apprentices,
technicians, the public and officials attending, about a future in the
skilled trades, and especially watching competitors be successful
in their chosen field competing against others.

Pour ceux et celles qui ne la connaissent pas, l’Association unie est
un organisme syndical qui exerce ses activités en Amérique du Nord
depuis 1889. Ses membres sont surtout des gens de métier, notamment
des tuyauteurs-monteurs de conduites de vapeur, des plombiers, des
soudeurs haute pression, des techniciens en chauffage, en ventilation,
en conditionnement d’air et en réfrigération, des monteurs de réseaux
de gicleurs, des techniciens en instrumentation et des techniciens en
essais non destructifs. Le syndicat australien des plombiers a adhéré
à l’Association, qui connaît une croissance soutenue ici au Canada.
Nous connaissons les besoins de notre pays en matière d’apprentis
et de compagnons qualifiés pour son avenir et nous savons que ces
travailleurs seront en forte demande. Une carrière dans les métiers de

Thanks to funding provided by the Government of Canada through the
Office of Literacy and Essential Skills within the department of
Employment and Social Development Canada, Skills/Compétences
Canada (SCC) is promoting Essential Skills through a two year “I AM
ESSENTIAL” campaign.
Grâce au financement consenti par le Gouvernement du Canada,
par l’entremise du Bureau de l’alphabétisation et des compétences
essentielles, au sein d’Emploi et Développement social Canada, Skills/
Compétences Canada (SCC) a mis en œuvre la campagne « Je suis

Essential Skills are used in nearly every job and at different levels
of complexity. You need them to get into a great career. They enable
people to evolve with their jobs and adapt to workplace change.
Les compétences essentielles sont utilisées, à divers niveaux de
complexité, dans pratiquement tous les emplois. Il te les faut pour
accéder à une excellente carrière.
There are many opportunities in the skilled trades and technology
occupations, but you need Essential Skills to succeed in them. If
you have good Essential Skills you will understand and remember
concepts introduced in technical training.
Elles permettent aux gens d’évoluer avec leur emploi et de s’adapter
aux changements dans leur milieu de travail.
The level for Essential Skills required for most trades is as high or
higher than it is for many office jobs.
Many industries have integrated the importance of Essential Skills
within the hiring process. Apprentices and tradespersons are
evaluated and assessed on their levels of Essential Skills.

HOW IS SCC PROMOTING
ESSENTIAL SKILLS AT THE SKILLS CANADA
NATIONAL COMPETITION?
Through our hands-on experiential experiences, such as our
Try-A-Trade® and Technology activities we will be highlighting the
importance of Essential Skills. Students will be given a passport
where they will identify an essential skill used in the activity they
performed.
The Essential Skills stage will allow sponsors and partner
organizations to showcase their industries and the importance
of Essential Skills as it relates to the crucial foundational skills
needed for those occupations.
To emphasize the importance of the Essential Skills, each of the
550 competitors will be introduced to the Essential Skill pertinent
to their area of competition/trade, not only through their own work
but they have also been identified within their project scope.
Il y a de multiples possibilités d’emploi dans les métiers et les
technologies, mais pour y accéder, tu dois posséder les compétences
essentielles. Posséder des compétences essentielles permet de
comprendre les concepts enseignés dans le cadre d’une formation
technique et de s’en rappeler.
Le niveau de complexité des compétences essentielles pour la plupart
des métiers est égal ou supérieur à ce qui est exigé pour nombre
d’emplois de bureau.
Une multitude d’entreprises ont intégré les compétences essentielles
qu’elles jugent importantes dans leurs procédures d’embauche.
En effet, les apprentis et les gens de métier sont évalués selon leur
niveau de maîtrise des différentes compétences essentielles.
POURQUOI SCC FAIT-IL LA PROMOTION
DES COMPÉTENCES ESSENTIELLES ?
74 % des employeurs au pays jugent que les compétences
essentielles ont une pertinence stratégique pour la conduite de leurs
affaires. (ABC Alpha pour la vie, 2013)
Les Canadiens de 16 à 24 ans se classent sous la moyenne en lecture
et en calcul, comparativement à leurs pairs dans 23 autres pays et
régions développés. (OCDE, 2012)

LES COMPÉTENCES ESSENTIELLES AUX
OLYMPIADES CANADIENNES DES MÉTIERS
ET DES TECHNOLOGIES ?
L’importance des compétences essentielles sera soulignée au
moyen de nos activités pratiques, par exemple aux stations Essaie
un métier et une technologie. Les élèves recevront un passeport,
où ils pourront indiquer les compétences essentielles utilisées dans
chacune des activités à laquelle ils auront participé.
En outre, sur la Scène des compétences essentielles, les
organisations commanditaires et partenaires présenteront leurs
secteurs d’activité ainsi que les compétences essentielles à maîtriser
dans les occupations qu’ils englobent.
Toujours dans le but de souligner l’importance des compétences
essentielles, on présentera à chacun des 550 jeunes concurrents
et concurrentes les compétences essentielles dans leurs domaines
de compétition respectifs, à la fois dans les projets à réaliser et dans
les fiches de description des concours.

At the 42nd WorldSkills Competition last July, our 35 WorldSkills
Team Canada 2013 competitors traveled to the Leipzig Trade Fair
and Exhibition Centre to compete against 1,000 representatives
of 65 countries.
En juillet dernier, au 42e Mondial des métiers, nos 35 compétiteurs
et compétitrices d’Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2013 se sont rendus
au Centre des foires et des expositions de Leipzig afin d’affronter
1 000 représentants de 65 pays.
Overall, the event was a great success for WorldSkills Team Canada
2013. Michael Scheideman, who competed in Refrigeration and Air
Conditioning, proudly stood on the podium to receive the gold medal.
He also won the ‘Best of Nation’ award having received top marks
amongst his Canadian peers.
Dans l’ensemble, la compétition s’est révélée un grand succès pour
Équipe Canada WorldSkills 2013. Michael Scheideman, qui s’est
présenté dans la catégorie « Réfrigération et climatisation », a gravi
fièrement la première marche du podium afin de recevoir la médaille
d’or. Il a aussi remporté le prix du meilleur concurrent de son pays
pour avoir obtenu une meilleure note que ses compatriotes.

At this year’s meeting, NYF participants will work on a social
media marketing campaign and will learn to harness the power of
promotional and marketing strategies and tools. The group will
work in teams to create a marketing campaign focusing on career
opportunities in the oil and gas industry and to highlight the
importance of Essential Skills in the trades. Each team will be
required to then present their campaign to a panel of judges that
includes delegates from this year’s sponsor, Shell Canada.
Au Forum de cette année, les participants travailleront à une campagne
de marketing dans les médias sociaux et apprendront à exploiter la
puissance des stratégies et des outils de promotion et de marketing.
Le groupe se divisera en équipes afin de créer une campagne de
marketing axée sur les perspectives de carrière dans l’industrie
pétrolière et gazière et de faire valoir l’importance des compétences
essentielles pour les métiers. Chaque équipe devra ensuite présenter
sa campagne à un jury, composé notamment de délégués de Shell
Canada, commanditaire de cette année.
The 2014 National Youth Forum (NYF) will be held in conjunction
with the 2014 Skills Canada National Competition. NYF will bring
together a diverse group of young adults, aged 18-22, from
across Canada.
The main goal for the NYF participants is to provide a platform
for analysis of Skills/Compétences Canada (SCC) programs and
activities and report recommendations that will improve SCC’s
programming and outreach to Canadian youth.
Last year their focus was sustainability. The group analyzed the
economic, environmental and social aspects of the Competition,
as well as Skills/Compétences Canada’s future. The group came
up with a series of recommendations such as going paperless,
obtaining resources and materials from local suppliers and
re-using or re-purposing projects from SCNC. They also made
recommendations to promote public awareness including engaging
large-scale media partners to increase visibility and encouraging
exhibitors to have hands-on demos at their booths.
Through the NYF 2014 experience, participants will hone the
knowledge and skills to develop a marketing strategy for any
project, company, awareness campaign or entrepreneurial activity
in the future. To practice the skills they learned during the National
Youth Forum in Toronto, each participant will be asked to present
the campaign on which they worked and speak of the uses of
social media marketing to organizations within their home region.

Le Forum jeunesse national 2014 se tiendra en marge des Olympiades
canadiennes des métiers et des technologies. Il rassemblera un groupe
diversifié de jeunes adultes, âgés de 18 à 22 ans, de partout au Canada.
Le Forum vise surtout à donner à ses participants la possibilité
d’analyser les programmes et les activités de Skills/Compétences
Canada (SCC) et de formuler des recommandations destinées à
améliorer la programmation et les initiatives de sensibilisation de SCC
auprès de la jeunesse canadienne.
L’an dernier, le groupe s’est concentré sur la durabilité. Il a analysé les
aspects économiques, environnementaux et sociaux des Olympiades
ainsi que l’avenir de Skills/Compétences Canada. Il a notamment
recommandé l’abandon du papier, l’obtention de ressources et de
matériaux de fournisseurs locaux ainsi que la réutilisation ou l’adaptation
de projets réalisés durant les Olympiades. Afin de sensibiliser davantage
les gens, le groupe a suggéré de s’associer avec des médias grand
public pour accroître la notoriété de la rencontre et d’encourager les
exposants à présenter des démonstrations pratiques à leur stand.
Grâce à leur expérience au Forum 2014, les participants acquerront
les connaissances et peaufineront les compétences nécessaires
à l’élaboration d’une stratégie de marketing, peu importe le projet,
la compagnie, la campagne de sensibilisation ou l’activité d’une
entreprise. Afin de mettre en pratique les compétences acquises au
Forum jeunesse national à Toronto, chacun d’eux devra présenter la
campagne qu’il a aidé à concevoir et parler de l’utilisation du marketing
dans les médias sociaux à des organismes de leur région d’origine.

ATOMIC ENERGY OF CANADA LTD. (AECL)
The ‘scientific glassblowing’ demonstration showcases the skills
required to produce custom glass products for use in the nuclear
laboratories. Students will have an introduction into what a scientific
glassblower produces, and the techniques and equipment used.
They will receive hands-on glass blowing experience and learn about
a variety of glass components required in the nuclear workplace.
Participants will learn about different types of glass, and their
applications, and will have an opportunity to try glassblowing and

scientifique ainsi qu’avec les techniques et le matériel employés. Ils
effectueront une expérience pratique du soufflage et se familiariseront

production Try-A-Trade, students can experience how a live television
show is made. Aim a camera, be on-camera, control sound and video
images.
School of design programs applied technology: participants will build
one module of Habitat 67 (an architectural icon/ famous multi-unit
housing complex in Montreal) by referring to architectural drawings
which will give them instructions on how to assemble their module, and
tell them where to adhere the module in relation to the other modules.

les étapes de la réalisation d’une émission de télé. Ils peuvent diriger
une caméra, se faire filmer, ajuster le son et les images vidéo.
École des programmes de conception en technologie appliquée :
Les élèves peuvent construire un module d’Habitat 67 (symbole
d’architecture de renommée, qui sert de complexe domiciliaire à
multiples logements, à Montréal), en se basant sur des dessins
architecturaux. Au moyen de ces directives, ils assembleront les
pièces, puis pourront joindre leur module aux autres.
