Diodon Holocanthus
Le Diodon est un des poissons coralliens qui peuple les mers
chaudes de toute la région Indo-Pacifique et des Caraïbes. Il
mesure entre 20 et 30 cm de long et peut vivre jusqu'à 20
ans.
Le nom Diodon qui signifie littéralement en grec « deux
dents » s’explique par sa dentition continue. Ses dents sont
soudées entre elles, forment un bec. Il s’en sert pour broyer
la carapace des oursins ; des coquillages ou les coraux dont
il se nourrit.
Diodon is one of the coral fish which populates the hot seas
of all the Indo-Pacific area and the Caribbean. It measures
between 20 and 30 cm length and can live up to 20 years.
The name Diodon which literally means in Greek “two teeth”
explains by its continuous teeth. Its teeth are welded between them, form a nozzle. It makes use of it
to crush the carapace of the sea urchins; shells or the corals of which it is nourished.
Craintif et timide, quand on a la chance de
pouvoir l'approcher sans le stresser et de capter
son regard, on remarque ses grands yeux qui
possèdent la particularité de s'orienter dans des
directions différentes.
Lorsqu’il se sent en danger, le poisson porc-épic
(encore appelé poisson-hérisson) justifie son nom
en se gonflant d’eau, faisant alors ressortir ses
épines venimeuses. Trop volumineux pour être
ainsi avalé et trop piquant pour servir d’amusebouche, le prédateur s’enfuit ou le recrache !
Après être resté gonflé pendant quelque temps,
le diodon chasse ordinairement l’air et l’eau avec
une force considérable par les branchies et par la
bouche. Il peut se débarrasser à volonté d’une partie de l’eau qu’il a laissée entrer.
Apprehensive and timid, when one with the
chance to be able to approach it without
stressing it and to collect his glance, one notices
his large eyes which have the characteristic to
be directed in different directions. When it feels
in danger, the fish porcupine (still called fishhedgehog) justifies its name by inflating water,
then emphasizing its poisonous spines. Too
much bulky to be thus swallowed and too
pricking to serve as amuse-stops, the predator
flees or slackens it!
After being remained inflated during some time,
the diodon usually expels the air and water with
a considerable force by the gills and the mouth. It can get rid at will of part of the water which it let
enter.
La chair du poisson porc-épic contient une substance très toxique, le
tétrodotoxine, qui la rend mortelle.
On le cuisine au Japon mais il faut pour cela une licence spéciale.
The flesh of the fish porcupine contains a very toxic substance, the
tétrodotoxine, which returns it mortal.
One cooks it in Japan but one needs for that a special licence.
