The scene represented here relates the famous episode in the fall of Troy when the Trojan prince Aeneas, bearing his old father Anchises on his back, fled the burning city with his son Ascanius Julius. In the Aeneid, Virgil makes Ascanius Julius the ancestor of the Iulii family, to which Octavius Augustus, Virgil's patron, belonged.
