Your dedication toward Canada’s mission against ISIL is truly appreciated, and the sacrifices you and your families made will never be taken for granted. The Wing Chief and I want to once again thank you, congratulate you and welcome you home from a successful mission. As the Op IMPACT mission transitions, our focus remains on those still in theatre carrying out the revised Government of Canada mandate. The exercise is taking place between February 28 and March 23. Twice a year, 410 Tactical Fighter (Operational Training) Squadron, alongside various elements of 4 Wing Cold Lake and the RCAF, deploy to locations in the southern United States to conduct warm weather training exercises. “This deployment is a vital piece to the overall readiness and force generation of the RCAF’s fighter force capability,” said MGen Dave Wheeler, Commander 1 Canadian Air Division. “[It] allows us to bring together our fighter jet and air-to-air refueling capabilities to conduct intensive training with our Allies in a deployed environment.” This year’s Exercise Puma Strike includes pilots, crews and technicians from 410 Tactical Squadron, 401 and 409 Tactical Fighter Squadrons, students Cpl Maillet, Wing Imaging Cold Lake Business Directory OPTOMETRISTS 5205 - 51 Ave Cold Lake, AB Clinic Hours Mon 7 am-5 pm Tues-Thurs 7 am-8 pm Fri 7 am-4 pm 780-594-5755 LIFE INSURANCE Bryon Pearman, CFP, CHS P.O Box 360 5104A-50 Avenue Cold Lake, AB T9M 1P1 T: (780) 594-1857 C: (780) 815-0010 F: (780) 594-2200 www.bpwealthandinsurance.ca E: [email protected] Denture Care 780-594-5150 5213 - 51 Ave Cold Lake www.lakecentredental.com Crisis Centre ÃÃ}ÊÌiiÌ ÊÀÊÃiÊ`iÌÕÀiöÊÀiiÊ«>ÌÊVÃÕÌ>Ìð >V}Ê>Û>>LiÊ" ° Dentist General Dentists Cold Lake Real Estate À°Ê>Û`ÊÜÀÞÊEÊÃÃV>Ìià À°Ê>Û`ÊÜÀÞÊEÊÃÃV>Ìià À°Ê>Àà >Ê>ÀÀÌÌ À°Ê>Àà >Ê>ÀÀÌÌ À°Ê/ÀiÌÊiÛ>à À°Ê- iÀÀÊÊ6>ÊÀi iiÀ>ÊiÌÃÌÀÞÊÊvviÀ}Ê«>ÌÃ]Ê ÀÌ `ÌVÃÊ>`ʰ6°ÊÃi`>ÌÊ`iÌÃÌÀ Þ xÓÓxÊxxÊ-ÌÀiiÌ]Ê `Ê>iÊÇnäx{xäxÈ DR. For larger versions, such as this particular iteration, it takes a large contingent of personnel coming together to make it happen. “We have deployed personnel from most of our units at 4 Wing to ensure all receive appropriate training to function as a team and to maximize the training opportunity,” said Col Kenny. “The logistical elements of deploying such a large contingent of personnel, equipment and aircraft for a three to four week exercise should not be understated,” he said. Col Kenny reports the exercise is going well so far. “I couldn’t be happier with the way the exercise is unfolding, and I’m extremely proud of our dedicated members,” he said. We just happen to be right here in Cold Lake.” For car buyers, that translates into low pressure “big-city” saving and the local angle means much more than just convenience. “We’re a part of this community, and that means we have to perform. When you drive off the lot from an outof-town dealer, you’re gone and forgotten,” Kjarsgaard said. “But you’re going to see us in the grocery store or at our kids’ soccer games. That’s small-town life.” “It’s great to bump into one of our customers and ask them how they’re enjoying their new car, or answer their service questions. When you’re honest and upfront with people, you can be comfortable meeting up with them in town.” “Word travels fast in smaller centres, so it’s important that the news is always good,” he said. As Cold Lake’s number one dealership, Cold Lake Chrysler plays a prominent role in community life – something that only a local business can offer. “Half of our employees are from military families,” Kjarsgaard said. “That really helps us relate to our military clientele and meet their needs. It also injects some of that attitude military families are famous for – rolling up our sleeves and pitching in around town.” Cold Lake Chrysler takes pride in supporting “It’s all about wanting town feel as our big-city local charities and our customers to feel savings.” Courier Lifestyle is an activities that enhance good,” Kjarsgaard said. the quality of life in Cold “We want to be known advertising feature of The Lake. as much for our small- Courier. Derek Coe, Health Promotion Manager When I ask people what it means to eat healthy, almost everyone provides the obvious answers: eat good food like fruits and vegetables, eat breakfast, and eat three meals per day plus snacks. Although these are part of a healthy diet, they miss one key element: portion sizes, or the overall amount of food you eat. This is important because although everything you eat could be considered healthy, eating too much can still cause complications. So this week, the Dietitians of Canada are encouraging everyone to “Prioritize Portion Size!” to prevent ourselves from overeating. There are a number of different ways that we can do this. First, we need to understand what a portion is, what a serving is, and what is the difference between the two. To answer this, visualize two of your plates at home side by side. Let’s call them Plate A and Plate B. On Plate A, place one slice of bread. On Plate B, place 10 slices of bread. Despite the fact that each plate has a different amount of bread, both plates represent one portion of food. But each plate holds a different number of servings. According to the Canada Food Guide, Plate A would have one standard serving of grain, while plate B would have 10 standard as everyone needs a amount of servings of grain. So different the amount of food on food based on height, gender and your plate represents weight, a “portion” regardless overall level of physical But despite of how much food it activity. is, while each portion this, the typical North diet still is made up of multiple American standard servings as consists of more food represented on the than we need. If so, it’s likely too much. The ideal plate is eight inches in diameter. Now that doesn’t mean you should go out and buy new plates, but maybe start leaving some room on your plate. An eight inch plate, if not over-filled, essentially has four servings of food on it: one serving of meat (1/4 of the plate); one serving of grain (1/4 of the plate); and two servings of vegetables (1/2 of the plate). Have some milk or water on the side, some fruit for dessert, and there you have it: a well-balanced meal that’s not too much food! If you would like more information on how to prioritize your portion sizes, or on other healthy nutrition tips, don’t hesitate to contact the Health Promotion Office at (780) 840-8000 extension 6958.
