1 LE COEUR DU SINGE: Student exercises Bonjour! I hope you enjoyed the video of LE COEUR DU SINGE. These exercises are meant to be interesting and fun. (If they’re not, write me a note and tell me what you would suggest!) Some of them might be easy; others might be hard. If you can’t do one, skip it and move on to another one. Each time you watch the video, you’ll be able to do more of these exercises. You might come across a few words here that aren’t in the video; they are all words that you can look up in a French dictionary, though. I’d love to hear from you! Glover www.anneglover.com 3 “Est-ce que” These simple little words are very powerful! They change a sentence (like Tu aimes les bananes) into a question (Est-ce que tu aimes les bananes?) Turn these sentences into questions using est-ce que. La maman crocodile a faim. La maman crocodile veut manger un coeur de singe. Le bébé crocodile ne veut pas attraper un singe. Le bébé crocodile a une idée. Les singes aiment les bananes. Le papa singe a faim. Le bébé singe adore les bananes. Le bébé singe embarque sur le dos du crocodile! Le crocodile plonge sous l’eau. C’est grave! Le bébé singe trouve des bananes dans l’arbre. C’est parfait! ***************************** © 2006 A. Glover www.anneglover.com 4 “Dans” & “Sur” These words tell us where things are. Dans is for things in or inside something; Sur is for on, or on top of something. Which word would you use in these sentences? L’île est ………. la rivière. Les arbres sont ………..l’île. Les bananes sont ………….les arbres. La rive is the land at the edge of the river. In English we say “the riverbank.” Les crocodiles sont …………la rivière. Le bébé singe est …………le dos du crocodile. Le papa singe est …………..la rive. La maman singe est ……………..la rive. Now here are some sentences that aren’t from this story. Complète les phrases avec “sur” ou “dans.” Le livre est ……… la table. Le fromage est …………mon sandwich. Le chocolat est ……….. ma bouche. Le chat est …………….le dos du chien. L’enfant est …………..mes épaules. It’s pronounced sort of like “Ba-na-nyay, and it’s the name of the tree that grows bananas. Listen for it the next time you watch the story. Here are some fruit trees; see if you can name the fruit each one grows. Glover www.anneglover.com Lemon Papaya Apricot Coconut 6 Féminin & Masculin In French, nouns (words for things, people and places) are feminine or masculine. If it has “le” or “un” in front of it, it’s masculine. If it has “la” or “une,” it’s feminine. Which of the fruits are feminine? Which ones are masculine? What about the fruit trees? (Arbre is masculine, so any kind of tree is also masculine, even if its fruit is feminine) Make a list of words you know in French. Beside it, write if it’s a word for a person, or a place, or a thing. If it is one of those, it’s a noun. Now write whether it’s feminine or masculine. You can look up the words in the dictionary if you’re not sure. ***************************** © 2006 A. Glover www.anneglover.com 7 J’aime, j’adore… It’s important in life to be able to say what we like and what we don’t like. What’s the difference between the Papa Singe saying J’aime les bananes and Bébé Singe saying J’adore les bananes? Of course, none of the monkeys said Je n’aime pas les bananes, or even stronger, je déteste les bananas! Here’s a list of foods, animals, activities, and other things. For each one, say whether you like it “J’aime…” you love it “J’adore…” you don’t like it “Je n’aime pas…” or you hate it “Je déteste…” Say or write the whole sentence.
