British Columbia News - Canadian Dermatology Association
January 2016 British Columbia News Evert Tuyp, MD, FRCPC 2015 has been quite a year for dermatology in BC. BC enthusiastically welcomed the world to one of the most successful World Congresses of Dermatology. We supplied beautiful weather, an outstanding venue, a program par excellence and hopefully an experience that was incredibly memorable to all who attended. The CDA also partnered to supplement the program in a unique fashion. Canadian dermatology is suitably proud of pulling off this achievement. UBC Clinical Professor Emeritus the late Dr. Stuart Maddin was the only missing piece but I am sure he would approve of the final result. Dr. Jerry Shapiro closed his office after the World Congress of Dermatology and moved to New York full time. Drs. Larry Warshawski, John Amiss, David Tsang, Nhiem Nguyen, Alastair Carruthers, and Rusty Harris retired after full and productive careers. Dr. Eiman Nasseri gave up trying to start a Mohs practice in the lower mainland and moved to become Univerity of Illinois College of Medicine at Chicago Assistant Professor of Dermatology and Director of Dermatologic & Mohs Surgery. This past year we welcomed recent graduates Drs. Kristin Noiles (Nanaimo) and Allison Sutton (Vancouver) as well as Dr. Sylvia Garnis-Jones back to BC (Maple Ridge) from St. Catharines. Despite these new additions to our workforce, there is still a dire shortage of dermatologists in BC resulting in long wait lists, if there even is a dermatologist available. The Dermatology Society of BC Practitioner of the Year was Dr. Jerry Shapiro.
