Xavier Dolan was just 20 years old
when his celebrated first feature,
I Killed My Mother, wowed both
audiences and critics in 2009. It was
a remarkable debut, but it was just
the beginning. The prolific Montreal
director has since established himself
as a leading Canadian talent on the
international scene.
Mommy, Dolan’s most ambitious
film to date, screens this month in
the Franco Movies category. It tells
the story of Diane Després, a fiery
single mother determined to get her
violent teenage son on track. Praised
for its emotional depth and vivid style,
the film won the Jury Prize at the 2014
Cannes Film Festival, the César for
Best Foreign Film and nine Canadian
Screen Awards, including Best Motion
Picture. No small feat for a filmmaker
who just turned 26 last month.

Xavier Dolan avait seulement 20 ans quand

mère, a séduit le public et la critique en
2009. Ce n’était que le début. Depuis, le
prolifique réalisateur montréalais a fait sa
marque à l’international comme cinéaste
canadien de premier plan.
Mommy, son film le plus ambitieux à
ce jour, est disponible ce mois-ci dans
la catégorie de films Franco. Il raconte
l’histoire de Diane Després, une fougueuse
mère célibataire résolue à mettre son ado
violent sur le droit chemin. Louangé pour
son intensité émotionnelle et son style
percutant, le film a reçu le prix du Jury
au Festival de Cannes 2014, le César du
meilleur film étranger et neuf prix Écrans
canadiens (dont celui du meilleur film), en
plus d’être sélectionné pour représenter le
Canada à l’Oscar du meilleur film en langue
étrangère. Tout un accomplissement pour
un cinéaste qui a eu 26 ans le mois dernier !

This month’s family lineup features two star-studded
adaptations of beloved musicals.
Fairy tales collide in Into the Woods, the first-ever movie version of Stephen Sondheim’s Tony Award–winning
fantasy. Weaving together storylines from Cinderella,
Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood and Jack and the
Beanstalk, the film boasts a magical ensemble cast,
including Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, James Corden,
Johnny Depp and Anna Kendrick.
Annie, another loads-of-fun musical, stars acclaimed
11-year-old Quvenzhané Wallis (Beasts of the Southern
Wild, 12 Years a Slave) as a Harlem orphan adopted by
Manhattan billionaire Will Stacks (Jamie Foxx). The
Broadway classic got a modern makeover for this latest

Hollywood revival, but you can still sing along to iconic
tunes like “It’s the Hard-Knock Life” and “Tomorrow.”
For fuzzy family fare, cuddle up to Paddington,
a heartfelt comedy inspired by the Paddington Bear children’s books. After journeying from Peru to London,
Paddington (Ben Whishaw) seems poised to start a new
life with the benevolent Brown family – that is, if he can
avoid the clutches of Millicent Clyde (Nicole Kidman), a
ruthless museum taxidermist.
Ben Stiller also takes on the role of a museum worker
in Night at the Museum: Secrets of the Tomb, the final
instalment in the Night at the Museum trilogy. When
the magic that brings the exhibits to life is threatened,
security guard Larry Daley has no choice but to embark
on his wildest adventure yet.

THE BOOK OF NEGROES
This powerful six-part miniseries recounts the life
of Aminata Diallo (Aunjanue Ellis), an African woman
who was taken from her village as a young girl and sold
into slavery in the Southern United States. Based on a
bestselling novel by Canadian author Lawrence Hill,
The Book of Negroes charts Aminata’s riveting struggle
to reach Canada and eventually return to her home
in Africa. Although Amanita’s journey is treacherous,
what defines her decades-long fight for freedom is not
her cruel circumstances but her unflagging sense of
hope. Directed by Clement Virgo and co-starring Cuba
Gooding Jr., the series screens this month on the Drama
TV channel.
