Welcome from the Alberta Host Committee Edmonton hosted its 100th consecutive Music Festival last month which makes the Edmonton Kiwanis Music Festival the longest running music festival in Canada. Hosting the National Music Festival here in Edmonton will be a very nice finishing touch to this year of celebration and recognition. Plans for the 2008 National Music Festival here in Edmonton are coming together nicely. The Alberta Music Festival Association will be your host and all members of the executive and many members from local festivals across the province are Les plans en vue du Festival national de musique 2008 ‘pitching in’ to ensure a successful festival. Delegates and comà Edmonton progressent bien. Our Annual General Meeting will be held in brand new facilities adjacent to the residence and the cafeteria is similarly close at hand. There are several restaurants and pubs across the street if delegates want to sample alternate fare. The Alberta College building houses the fine and performing arts programs for Grant MacEwan and consequently is an ideal facility for our purposes. Having all of the practice and performance venues in the one building is very convenient. The Lt. Governor’s Office has agreed to host our Welcome Reception at Government House. Government House was the official residence of the Province's first six Lieutenant Governors. It is now used for high-level government conferences, receptions, and dinners. The Federation Dinner (Gala Centennial Dinner this year) is to be held in the Faculty Club at the University of Alberta. This is a very formal setting on the banks of the Saskatchewan River. In addition to an address by Senator Tommy Banks, we will be entertained by a local talent, Lizzy Hoyt, on the fiddle. We are also planning to hold a “Dutch Auction” so we need all delegates to bring items to donate to the sale. You know the kind of things we need, treasures that you picked up at a garage sale that you can’t live without! Hey, one person’s junk in another’s treasure. Terry Atkinson, a former member of the AMFA Executive has been our auctioneer many times in the past and has agreed to serve in this capacity for Nationals. We are going to go to West Edmonton Mall for Host Night. Delegates and Competitors will have the option of spending a couple of hours in World Waterpark or Galaxyland. If you fancy a swim, be sure to bring your bathing suit. Galaxyland Amusement Park includes some of the best rides anywhere including the Galaxy Orbiter and the Mindbender said to be the world’s largest indoor high speed, triple loop roller coaster. If you don’t fancy either of these activities there are hundreds of stores to visit. The evening will end with a pizza party in the Fantasyland Hotel which is part of the West Edmonton Mall Complex. If you’re coming to Edmonton from way down east and don’t get out west often, you might consider coming early or staying after the festival to visit the Rocky Mountains in Jasper and/or Banff. The Jasper to Banff Parkway is one of the most beautiful highways in the world. On behalf of everyone on our committee we are looking forward seeing you here in Edmonton. We know that the Festival will be exceptional and the social activities will be memorable. Larry Johnson, Chair, Alberta Host Committee ...cont’d page 4 President’s Message Dianne Johnstone As I sat down to write this for the Piu Mosso I thought about the local and provincial festivals that will be over by the time you receive this. I want to say a huge thank you for all the work that has gone on across this country from rural, city and provincial festivals to help keep the festival movement alive in Canada! We now have the culmination of the Federation’s Festivals – the “National Music Festival” taking place August 14th – 16th in Edmonton. We are also excited to help Edmonton and the Alberta Music Festival Association celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the 1st Festival in Canada! What a milestone! Think not only of the hundreds of musicians that started in a local festival and have gone on to careers in music, but also of the thousands who formed a love for music because they had been given the opportunity to perform! A special thank you to Larry Johnson, Chair of the Hosting Committee, and his committee as they continue to work hard preparing for this National Festival. The final touches are being put on these preparations. I would also like to thank our sponsors and donors who truly do help to keep this festival alive!! We sincerely appreciate all the support you have given us! Thank you to Cindy Rublee and the rest of the executive who work throughout the year to produce a first class National event. I know the next couple of months will be very busy preparing for our AGM and for our National Competitors’ arrival in Edmonton. On a personal note, I would like to share with you something that has consumed much of my time this year. Our first grandson was born 11 years ago during our Provincial Festival, the second was born 9 years ago, a couple of days after our Provincial Festival and the third was born the night I came home from Provincials. My kids like to joke and call them my festival grandsons! Our daughter surprised us at Christmas with news she was expecting twins May 22nd…yes, right during Provincials! On March 14th, as the last session was ending at our local festival and adjudications were winding up, my husband came and said our daughter had gone into labour and we headed for Edmonton. She gave birth to two beautiful boys ten weeks early! They are home now and doing fantastic but we can now call them my local festival babies! Our middle daughter is getting married July 5th so life is very rich and busy till Nationals! Here is a picture of the proud Gramma! I hope you will be able to join us in Edmonton August 14th – 16th for the National Music Festival and the 100th Celebration! Salutations respectueuses, Dianne Johnstone NOTICE OF MEETING The 59th Annual General Meeting of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals will be held August 10-13th, 2008 at Grant MacEwan College, Edmonton, Alberta. Executive Director’s Message Cindy Rublee Well, it’s June already and I haven’t had a single mosquito bite here in Winnipeg, so I will take that as a sign that this is going to be a great summer! There are, of course, other signs – rumours coming out of Edmonton suggest that this 100th anniversary year is going to be spectacular. The host committee has some outstanding events planned for those attending the 2008 National Music Festival and I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all of them for their hard work, especially Larry Johnson who is chairing the committee. What an amazing team! Once again, it’s time to remind our provincial administrators of a few housekeeping details. Please remember that designates must have criminal record checks completed prior to arrival in Edmonton – these should be sent on to the office by mid-July. This year we are trying a new system for competitor entry forms. I have received the first entry forms in and I am very pleased with the results! Thanks very much to Jerry Lonsbury who introduced me to the program, as it is one they use in Alberta with great success. If you have any difficulties with the process, please contact me and I will assist you. Registration forms for delegates, designates, accompanists and guests must be in to the office by July 1st to ensure accommodations and meals at the University. Dianne, thank you for your fundraising efforts. I tried to think of a new way of saying that Dianne again has done a fantastic job of fundraising, but there really isn’t another way to say it. You keep us on a solid base and we could not do it without you. I just want to say a special thanks to everyone involved in the festival movement, from the local to the provincial to the national level. Often I find myself in awe of the commitment you demonstrate – through family illness, births, deaths, marriages, raising children, full-time jobs, part-time jobs, other volunteer work – you still manage to find the time to keep the festival movement alive and well. That is an accomplishment! This is a very special year for Edmonton as it is the 100th anniversary of their music festival, which, as you know by now, was the first competitive music festival in Canada in 1908. I hope many of you can be there in August to celebrate with us. Have a wonderful summer! Cindy Rublee Correction Please note that in the Digest Report 2007, page 66, an error was made. But for this musician it wasn’t about the competition, it was all about the piano. Win Mayor, 98, performs in her first Kiwanis Festival, wowing the crowd and earning a grade to match her age—98% -Photo by Leigh Blenkhorn “To think I got myself into this just by saying to one of the Kiwanis Club members that I wanted to get my hands on that grand piano,” she said. Mavor started her performance by leading the audience in O Canada before performing a number of folk songs. Her performance earned her a standing ovation from the crowd and kind words from festival adjudicator Brian Finley. “It’s an absolute joy to be honoured by listening to you play,” he told Mavor. “When I sit there I think about what to say to performers, the only thing I can think to say is, thank you. You’re a real inspiration.” Mavor said she was just glad she had the chance to perform in the festival and finally get her hands on the piano. “It was very strange to be up there. It has been a long time since I have done anything like that,” she said after the performance. “The piano was different. It’s great for someone younger because they use more force than I do. It’s a tricky thing. Everybody’s piano is different.” Mavor, who lives at Heritage Place in Barrie, said she has access to a piano and enjoys playing from time to time. “I can play it anytime I feel like it, but I am very lazy,” she joked. Mavor has been playing piano since 1918, when she was only eight years old. “Lessons cost 50 cents. But I didn’t like to practice,” she said. “I used to be told that I would have to wash the dishes if I didn’t practice, so I would practice.” An Update from the Olds and District Music Festival The Olds and District Kiwanis Music Festival celebrated its Twenty-fifth Anniversary this year. This festival has grown to be one of the most successful Festivals in Alberta. It started out as a competitive Festival, but it wasn't long before the Board saw the need to give adjudicators more time to share their knowledge with participants. Because of this, organizers decided to focus on the teaching/learning aspect and it has worked extremely well. One adjudicator, when he went back to Calgary reported to his colleagues that he thought he had died and gone to heaven, because he was given plenty of time to Workshop with the participants. In January, a call went out to former participants, teachers and volunteers to write their memories of the Festival, in order to compile them into booklet form. Thirty-five responded and the booklet has been printed which is now for sale. Each person who entered an article received a copy. An Anniversary Celebration dinner was held on February 28 at the Olds Evergreen Centre with over 100 former participants, volunteers and teachers attending the dinner and Concert which followed. This year, because of the Twenty-fifth Anniversary, adjudicators who had proven to be "special" were invited back and two adjudicators who grew up in the Olds Festival, Marliss Weber in Speech Arts and Melissa Mostert (nee Woodruff) in Piano, also joined the adjudication team. At the Grand Concert held on April 15th seventy-four awards were given to successful participants, with twenty-two recommendations to the Provincial Music Festival. There were also seven alternate recommendations. Each participant at the Grand Concert put an item into a Time Capsule, which will be opened in 2018. Mavor’s son, Les, who came with his wife to see the performance, said he was proud of his mom. “I was glad to see her up there,” he said. “She has never been afraid to perform. She has always played for large groups over the years.” The Anniversary Committee was headed by Linda Weber with assistance from Arlene Wilde and June Chittick. Les said his mother was never one to shy away from performing, remembering one time when she began playing a piano in a music store and gathering quite the crowd. “She just kept playing and the people from the store were trying to get her to stop.” Submitted by June Chittick Secretary, Olds and District Kiwanis Music Festival Though Mavor doesn’t know whether she’ll perform in next year’s Kiwanis Music Festival, she feels she accomplished her goal. “I really enjoyed the beautiful piano. That was the reason that I did it,” she said. “I wanted to play that particular piano. It’s a tremendous acquisition for the city.” Notice of Motion Gail Carleton/Brenda Sleightholme, “that the History Committee recommends that the Bylaws be changed to delete the appointment of a historian for the FMCF (Article III, #3 )” The following notice(s) of motions were received in the FCMF office 90 days in advance of the 2008 Annual General Meeting: Notice of Motion Submitted by The Alberta Music Festival Association and Associated Manitoba Arts Festivals Motion: Effective immediately, all changes made to the National Syllabus regulations shall become effective on July 1 following their acceptance at any Federation Annual Meeting." Rationale: When motions are passed in August, many provincial and local festivals are already far into their festival year and close to printing deadlines for syllabi. To impose changes at such a late date is not appropriate. Notice of Motions Submitted by: Jerry Lonsbury, Alberta Motion: That the bylaws of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals be amended to include the elected office of Treasurer, effective at the time of the 2009 elections. Motion: That the bylaws of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals be amended to exempt the Treasurer from the limitation of two consecutive terms. Motion: That the bylaws of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals be amended to include the Treasurer as a signing officer. Specific changes would be: V.1 the addition of the word Treasurer following Vice President, V.3 the addition of the words excepting the Treasurer whose term is not subject to the two consecutive terms limit. VI. the insertion of the following: “3. The Treasurer shall have overall responsibility for the financial affairs of the Federation. Included in the responsibilities are the oversight of the procedures used for the receipt, deposit, and expenditure of Federation funds; the preparation of, the timely distribution of, and the presentation of the annual budget to the Finance Committee; the distribution of the Audited Financial Statement by June 30 preceding each Annual Meeting, to all members of the Finance Committee and all Provincial Administrators; and such other duties as may from time to time be assigned by the Executive Committee, a General Meeting, or these Bylaws.” and the renumbering of the remainder of the VI VII. 2 the insertion of The Treasurer as item c) and the relettering of the other officers listed. VIII. 1. a) insert the words “the Treasurer in consultation with Executive Director” following “To review the financial statements for the previous year and the proposed budget for the coming year as prepared by” VIII.1 following the underlined title Membership the word Vice-President be replaced with the word Treasurer XI. 4.replace the words “Executive Director” with the word “Treasurer” XIII. 2. insert after the words “ Treasurer or” immediately ahead of the words “Executive Director” XIV insert after the words “ Treasurer or” immediately ahead of the words “Executive Director” Rationale: The functions of the Treasurer are important enough to require a separate office. Many potential candidates for the office of Vice President may be reluctant to take that office if it includes the role of Treasurer as is now the case. There is a skill set required to carry out the role of Treasurer and those skills are not necessarily the forte of someone willing to fulfill the role of Vice President. Similarly, an excellent vice-president may not wish to take on the responsibilities of chairing the Finance Committee. The Federation has the good fortune of having on its Board, a number of people who can very quickly look at a budget or financial statement and grasp the information presented and the implications of that information. For many others, a much longer time of study and reflection is needed to gain useful information from financial documents. As the audit has already been done by the end of June, it would be useful to have the document in the hands of Board members in advance of the Annual Meeting. Notice of Motion Submitted by: Kathy Fuller, Nova Scotia Motion: That the vocal syllabus be amended as follows: A. Provincial Festival 3. Art Song, may be multi-movement work B. National Festival In the preamble, change “repertoire may include only one song cycle” to “repertoire must include one complete multi-movement work”. 3. Art Song recommended from performance at Provincial Level. If this selection is from a multi-movement work, additional movements or the complete work may be performed depending on time. Rationale: 1. Specifying Art Song as a requirement completes the intent of the vocal syllabus to have singers show competence in the major areas of opera, sacred, and recital performance. 2. Specifying the requirement for a complete multi-movement work brings the vocal syllabus into line with other classes, where complete works are mandatory to show not just virtuosity but also artistic maturity. 3. The current wording is imprecise, and could be interpreted at both extremes: either one complete plus 2 complete-minus-one-movement song cycles, or one complete or incomplete cycle and no other multi-movement selections. 4. The very first line of the National Festival preamble specifies that singers have the same maximum time of 60 minutes as in other classes; restricting the singers’ freedom to program a one hour recital by limiting art song performance is inconsistent with the spirit and rigour of an important national competition. 2008 EDMONTON NATIONAL FESTIVAL PRIZE DONORS This list is current as of May 31st. 2008.
