PROJECT ACTIVITY SUMMARY
**Area of Intervention: Teaching Material and Communication and information technology
By increasing or providing new technologies in the school, the students are more motivated to be in class and to learn. This increases
the overall chance for success.
Students in this project talked for weeks about the palm pilot project and could not wait to have the chance to work with
their own. The palm pilots were incorporated wherever possible in the day to day routines of the classroom. Some examples
are as organizers for homework and long terms assignments.
From time to time. The students also used the palm pilots as word processors and a computer to type up assignments for the
class. As the palm have a calculator program, every time a calculator was needed the one in the palm would be used
For science classes, probes such as temperature and pH that are connected to the palm pilot were used to gather date on the
environment. When it was time to test the hot-air balloons and the bottle rockets, a program on the palm pilot was used to
calculate the height attained.
The palm facilitate teaching in increasing student organizational and accomplishment. An interface between the palm and a computer
projector was purchased so that the students and teachers could do computer based presentations in the class without lugging around
a huge computer..
Palm Pilots are currently in use at Makivik, KRG and the municipality. Familiarity with these tools will help students adapt to the
workplace. Knowledge of this technology may be an advantage for candidates seeking employment in these community organizations.

Computer based learning activities: Students were thrilled to use the
palm pilots The palm pilots allowed students that had finished their
work early to play more education games such as scrabble and other
word association games.
On-going still under evaluation
Students able to use excel, PowerPoint, MS Word and a calculator.
Also Teachers used Student 4.0 to help with individual organization.
This has allowed a slight opening for access to enrichment for some
students,
The students gained more access time with computers and also
increased computer literacy: range of 4-8 hours per week with
computer access up to 80% of the time.

Project Title:
MULTIMEDIA SCIENCE PROJECT
Project Leader:
Bruna Mastroianni, education consultant
Duration: Start/End:
March 2004 - March 2005
Budget Code:
160-1-45106
TARGET CLIENTELE:
Students, staff and the Nunavik population at large
PROJECT THEME
This project encourages governance/management in education, classroom
effectiveness; parental and community involvement; school to work transition.
PROJECT ACTIVITY SUMMARY
The goal of the Multimedia Science Project is twofold:
* to make accessible both Aboriginal knowledge and Western scientific knowledge to our students, teachers and education consultants
* to create an inviting, user-friendly web site that allows the users access not only to texts but also audio clips, videos and photos
which are collected together and contained on a CD/DVD rom and housed on the KSB website
The project was developed in 3 phases: design, development and implementation.
PHASE 1
- 2 video productions were completed:
A Profile of Naalaq Nappaaluk and How to Make an Avataq
- research of existing material on the seal at KSB and AVATAQ
- the interface for the webpage was completed: videos, audio clips, photos and documents have been inserted
- we designed and developed computer generated illustrations of the seal anatomy
Although the website is under construction, a rich collection of educational material, aimed at the study of science, culture, ecology, as
well as languages can be found online: http://www.kativik.net/natsiq/
PHASE 2
Production of the following additional videos:- seal dissection in the laboratory>seal anatomy, internal organs and the eye
- traditional butchering techniques >Ungava Bay and Hudson Bay
- sharing the catch
A workshop on Inuktitut Language Terminology was held on naming the seal parts with the collaboration of AVATAQ and Makivik
Research.
PHASE 3
(March 2005-March 2006)
Pilot test multimedia project
- presentation to education consultants and teachers
- workshop for education consultants and teachers on webpage creation
Revision and development
- design and develop the section ˆAreas of Studyˆ to complement curriculum both primary and secondary programs
at KSB with the education consultants and teachers
- translate selected material into alternative languages
- revisions and corrections
Implementation and distribution
PROJECT OUTPUT
Project Outcomes
Creation of a multimedia
project on the seal.
Baseline
Many documents existed
both at KSB and
AVATAQ.
End of Project
We compiled existing documents that were considered pertinent and
produced material to develop the multimedia project on the seal.
http://www.kativik.net/natsiq/
LESSONS LEARNED
A project of this scope needs a committed production team. Adding tasks to staff with a full workload slows down the process.
Challenges: Additional time was required to produce the seal dissection videos: re-writing the script according to the visuals, doing
the voice/over; overall edit took longer. This resulted in a modification of the contract with AVATAQ.
The video production on the seal dissection: Makivik Research Center biologist was not able to give a running commentary for the
camera as she performed the dissection. This resulted in additional timeline extension to include a post-production narration of the
dissection. The modifications did not affect the total budget as KRG contributed addition funding.
FUTURE DEVELOPMENT
This project is expected to continue next year (if funding is available)

Disquettes, cd-rom, ordinateurs, Internet, photocopieuse, etc. Seule l’imprimante couleur manque

PROJECT ACTIVITY SUMMARY
**Through some logistical problems our notification of the approval of our project was delayed. Through some investigation at the
school, we believe that the problem came with some mechanical errors that took place at that time. This delay in the project made it
impossible to meet our goals and objectives. Our new time frame begins in February 2005 with the ordering of the materials. Materials
arrived in March and teachers were notified that the equipment had come in and that the workshops for the working of this equipment at
the end of March. Meanwhile, teachers are getting together photographs and developing a number of music videos that were produced
by the students. This together with slide shows will be put together for parent teacher night on the 23rd. This will meet one of the goals of
this project, to have parents and community become more involved in what is going on in the school. This is a beginning and as we
learn through our workshops, we expect that this will happen more often,
