Anne, Léa, Flavie, Alice et Julia font partie de la première vague
d’enfants chinoises adoptées au Québec dans les années 1990. On
me prend pour une Chinoise ! nous convie dans l’univers intime de
ces adolescentes que la réalisatrice Nicole Giguère a suivies durant
trois ans. Elle a aussi accompagné quelques-unes d’entre elles dans
un voyage intense au pays qui les a vues naître.
Anne, Léa, Flavie, Alice and Julia were part of the first wave of Chinese
children adopted in Quebec in the 1990s. They Think I’m Chinese!
takes us into the inner world of these young girls. Director Nicole
Giguère filmed them over a three-year period and accompanied some
of them on an emotional journey to the country where they were born.
This film is first and foremost a story of trust and collaboration
between the director and the five adolescents, one of whom is her own
daughter. Our encounter with girls we assume to be Chinese is both
touching and inspiring.

ABOUT THE FILMMAKER
Née à Québec, Nicole Giguère commence sa carrière de
réalisatrice en 1975 avec le collectif VIDÉO FEMMES, dont
elle est une des fondatrices. À Montréal depuis 1986, elle
travaille comme scénariste et réalisatrice indépendante sur
des documentaires d’auteurs et des séries télévisuelles. Ses
intérêts principaux concernent les phénomènes sociaux, le
domaine culturel et musical.
Nicole Giguère was born in Quebec City and began her
directing career in 1975 at the VIDÉO FEMMES collective,
which she helped found. Based in Montreal since 1986,
she works as a scriptwriter and independent filmmaker of
point-of-view documentaries and television series. Her main
interests are social issues, culture and music.
En 2003, elle présente Alice au pays des gros nez, une œuvre personnelle tournée sur plusieurs années, traitant des fillettes chinoises
adoptées au Québec. Retrouvant quelques-unes de ces jeunes filles
devenues adolescentes, elle suit leur parcours pendant trois ans dans
le film On me prend pour une Chinoise !
In 2003 she completed Alice au pays des gros nez / Alice in Big
Noses’ Land, a personal film shot over several years and dealing with
young Chinese girls adopted in Quebec. She later made contact with
some of the girls, who had since become adolescents, and filmed their
experiences over a three-year period for They Think I’m Chinese!

Ce film est avant tout une histoire de confiance et de complicité entre
la réalisatrice et les cinq adolescentes, dont l’une est sa propre fille.
Notre rencontre avec celles qu’on prend pour des Chinoises est aussi
touchante qu’inspirante.
How do these young Quebeckers experience their differences?
Through the ups and downs of daily life, by way of their concerns and
discoveries, the girls reveal their innermost feelings with sincerity and
courage. Their thoughts are perceptive and mature.

les hauts et les bas de la vie quotidienne, au fil de leurs préoccupations et de leurs découvertes, les filles se livrent avec sincérité et
