or any other web site you can find. Please note: ISBN numbers are provided for each book. Be sure you order the correct version of the text. Check the ISBN
before you order. Once you reach the web page, try a “full search” or “recherche détaillée” directly for the ISBN (when searching with the ISBN, do not include
the hyphens). Books now have a 10-digit and 13-digit ISBN, and you can search for either.
Please note that in order to allow sufficient time for shipping, students should make decisions about courses, complete registrations, and o rd e r b o o ks no
later than July 21. While students are still free to make later changes in registration, they should recognize that it is their responsibility to obtain the appropriate

The Classical Theater

Dans ce séminaire, nous redécouvrirons le théâtre de Racine et nous verrons que cet auteur dit classique fait en réalité preuve d’une très grande
originalité dramaturgique. Au cœur de toutes ses pièces se trouve le silence. Or ce dernier n’est pas univoque : il est trouble, polysémique ou
impénétrable. Il troue les dialogues et exacerbe la tension dramatique. Le silence est d’autant plus puissant qu’il est couplé à des énoncés performatifs
dramatiques. Les étudiants seront invités à se familiariser avec les traités de civilité, les traités rhétoriques et les pratiques théâtrales de l’époque
classique pour mesurer l’innovation de Racine. Cependant, la théorie des actes de langage et les apports de la socio-linguistique seront un contrepoint
intéressant pour apprécier l’actualité du théâtre racinien. Nous étudierons les pièces de Racine à la lumière des sources antiques (Eschyle, Euripide,
Sophocle et Sénèque) et des pièces contemporaines (Rotrou, Corneille, Tristan L’Hermite, Quinault) dont Racine se nourrit tout en s’en distanciant.
Cette approche comparative permettra aux étudiants de voir comment Racine s’approprie les mythes anciens pour les transposer en une lutte contre
l’indicible. Dans chaque pièce, il s’agit de révéler quelque chose d’inacceptable et d’impossible à dire. Comment dire ce qu’on ne peut pas dire ? Et
surtout, comment interpréter le silence ? L’étude de la mise en scène permettra aux étudiants de répondre à de telles questions. Le cours s’accompagnera
d’exercices pratiques : le jeu théâtral complètera ainsi l’approche théorique.
De nombreuses ressources seront mises sur le site SAKAI, les mises en scène filmées seront disponibles en réserve à la bibliothèque. L’édition de référence (qui se trouve également
à la bibliothèque) est celle de la Pléiade due à Georges Forestier en 1999 [ISBN 978-2-07-011561-7], mais une autre édition est ici suggérée en raison de son faible coût.

La littérature est un laboratoire incomparable pour réfléchir sur les questions éthiques. Il suffit pour cela d’entrer dans les livres, de se substituer aux
personnages et de se confronter aux dilemmes auxquels ils sont soumis ("La fin justifie-t-elle les moyens ?», « Est-il permis de mentir ?», «Peut-on
sacrifier une personne pour en sauver plusieurs ?»…), qui peuvent se réduire à la question : «Qu’est-il juste de faire ?».

History of the French Cinema

The course will provide an overview of French cinema from its beginnings to 1968, then will concentrate on the three periods that most historians
find to be the richest and most interesting: mature silent cinema (1915-29), the decade of the 1930s (most critics find this to be the high point of all
French filmmaking), and (paradoxically, given the context) the years of the German Occupation. Students may make their presentations and write
their papers on a film or a set of films from one of these periods, or from the postwar "Tradition of Quality"--which is in some ways a continuation
of the cinema of the Occupation.

Methodology of Teaching and Research is a practical and theoretical introduction to Second Language Acquisition (SLA). It will provide students
with the theoretical background of the most recent approaches and trends in Foreign Language teaching methodologies. The critical reflection
of pedagogical practices and language pedagogy is emphasized. The course offers an overview of multiple factors that influence language
teaching and learning in traditional and non-traditional classroom settings. It prepares students to evaluate teaching methodologies and to
stimulate them to reflect on their own attitudes and approaches to language teaching. Taught in English.
