Commemorative Cross Replaced
REGIONAL COMMUNITY BULLETIN August / août 2011 BULLETIN COMMUNAUTAIRE RÉGIONAL Box 328 St. Malo, MB R0A 1T0 www.jadorestmalo.ca Commemorative Cross Replaced St. Malo now has a new cross at the corner of Highway 218 and St. Malo Avenue. Thank you to the following volunteers for their resources, skills and time on this project: Hervé Marion, Jean Payette, Dave & Aggie Gosselin, Marc Maynard, Gerald Maynard, Emile & Lorraine Racine, and Maurice Comeault. History: On March 20, 1889 Dave Gosselin’s great grandparents, Rémi & Éléonore (née Vertefeuille) Gosselin arrived in St. Malo from Sainte-Rosalie, Quebec. Here on this corner piece of land, they farmed and raised 14 children: Aimé, Amanda, Alida, Rosilda, Robertine, Laura, Octave, Henri, Rosa-Delphine, Anna, Anne-Marie, Bertha, Lucien, and Georges. This family erected a 24’ white cross approximately 60 years ago and then the stone monument with plaque in 1989 (centennial anniversary of arrival). The white cross was blessed and put up by the parishioners of the St. Malo Catholic Church as shown in the old photograph below, courtesy of Denis Hébert. Some residents of our community were in attendance and remember that day. This white cross had been repaired and repainted a few times over the years and the St. Malo Chamber of Commerce was planning on doing the same this past June. However, the cross had deteriorated to the point of needing replacement. As always the volunteers in St. Malo stepped up to the plate and within weeks our community had a brand new cross, the bushes were trimmed, the grass cut and flowers planted. It is a wonderful historical site to remember the forefathers that came and established this great community of St. Malo. Take a moment to stop there and have a look. —Lorraine Jones-Racine Regional Community Bulletin, August, 2011 Condolences DAVE GOSSELIN OWNER Condolences are extended to the Robert family regarding the loss of Roger Robert. President’s Report It sure has been a warm few weeks in southern Manitoba. The crops are maturing, tourists are visiting our beaches and businesses in town and local folks are managing a few days of relaxation. The Chamber Directors & Members have worked on: Coordinating the replacement of the cross on HWY 218 & St. Malo Avenue Trimming the bushes around the deer monument by the Chalet Malouin Curb painting on St. Malo Avenue & Avenue de la Grotte Attending summer events on behalf of the Chamber Working on the Regional Bulletin articles The Chamber had a big setback with the loss of our bulletin’s agricultural feature writer Roger Robert. It will be very difficult to replace Roger as he was a unique individual but we would like to keep this feature running, and are looking for a volunteer to take this over. Call me if you are interested. New Projects the Chamber is working on New Year’s Eve Dinner & Dance – this will be a ―dress-up‖ social evening at the church hall so keep this in mind for your December 31st celebrations. St. Malo Brochure – this is a proposed folding, larger size brochure with a map of the town and nearby surrounding area. It would have a Legend identifying the location of businesses, school, arena, Provincial Park, Museum etc. Advertising opportunities will be available. In closing here is something to think about: Life gives us MOMENTS when a lesson can be learned. What have you LEARNED lately? Regional Community Bulletin, August, 2011 8 In Memory of Roger Gilles Patrick Robert On July 9, the community lost a truly remarkable man. Roger Robert was the author of all of the St. Malo Regional Bulletin ―Spotlight on Agriculture‖ articles. He was much more than an author. Roger was a man who was loved and respected by his fiancée, Marlene, his siblings, Chuck and Renée, his many family members and friends, the farming community and all of those who knew or came to know this smiling cheerful man. Roger loved farming! He dedicated himself to serving the farmers of this region to make their lives better. Whether it was knowledgeable advice to a farming friend, work through his job as a Farm Production Advisor or writing an article for our local bulletin, he cared about the struggles all farmers encountered and did his very best to help them. His last bulletin article in the July issue was a great example of how Roger passed on his knowledge to help farmers improve their techniques and production. Roger gave. Even when he was sick, tired and stressed to the max he still gave…. of himself, his time and his knowledge. Roger was President of the St. Pierre Agricultural Society, Vice-President of the DeSalaberry Wind Energy Co-op, Captain of the St. Pierre Volunteer Fire Department and author to many newspaper articles. He will be greatly missed by all of these organizations. From the St. Malo & District Chamber of Commerce we send our sincere condolences to Rogers’ family and friends. Our prayers are with you all. July brought us the St. Pierre-Jolys Frog Follies and Agricultural Fair. The St. Malo & District Chamber of Commerce was invited to participate in the VIP Frog Jumping contest. I participated on behalf of the St. Malo & District Chamber of Commerce. My frog, somewhat hesitant at first to move off of the starting block, did end up (with encouragement) to take 3 big leaps for a respectable 102‖. This was not enough to win the VIP contest but was a very respectable distance for a first time frog jumper. Thank you St. Pierre Chamber of Commerce for inviting us to participate in your event. It was a very nice afternoon of sunshine and fun. The St. Malo & District Chamber of Commerce sends congratulations to both St. Pierre Chamber of Commerce and Agricultural Society for another successful summer festival in the RM of DeSalaberry.
