Research
New European Emigration in Times of Crisis
The project « New European Emigration in Times of Crisis » submitted
by Jean-Michel LAFLEUR was selected by the University of Liège for
funding in the framework of the “Fonds Spéciaux de la Rercherche”. The
project will look into the effect of new Southern European migration to
Belgium.
Immigrant Incorporation and Popular Music: a transatlantic and
trans-local comparison
The project « Immigrant Incorporation and Popular Music: a
transatlantic and trans-local comparison » submitted by Marco
MARTINIELLO was selected by the University of Liège for funding in the
framework of the “Fonds Spéciaux de la Rercherche”. The
project examines the relevance of popular music in the theoretical and
policy debates about immigrant incorporation and diversity in migration
and post-migration cities.

Ulg and UPF Master in Immigration Studies
The University of Liège and Pompeu Fabra University of Barcelona start
a new joint degree in Immigration Studies in September 2014. Read

IMISCOE Conference
CEDEM will be well represented at the next IMISCOE Conference in
Madrid as our researchers organize 3 workshops: 1) « South-North
migration of EU citizens in times of crisis » (JM Lafleur), « Immobile and
Trapped Populations in Areas Affected by Environmental Changes »
(François Gemenne) and « The direct and indirect consequences of the
economic crisis on immigrant and ethnic minorities’ arts and culture »

CEDEM field visit: On the occasion of the annual field visit, the entire
group visited the former coalmine of Blegny (Liège) for a fascinating
visit to this important place for Belgium’s industrial development and its
migration history.

context of the 7FP Training Network “Integration and international
migration: pathways and integration policies”, the Centre for Ethnic and

La nouvelle émigration européenne en temps de crise
Le projet de Jean-Michel LAFLEUR intitulé « La nouvelle émigration
européenne en temps de crise » a été sélectionné par le Conseil de le
Recherche de l’ULg dans le cadre des fonds spéciaux de recherche. Ce
projet examine les impacts de la nouvelle immigration du Sud de
l’Europe vers la Belgique sur les sociétés d’accueil et d’origine de ces
nouveaux migrants.
Incorporation des immigrés et musique populaire: Une
comparaison transatlantique and trans-locale
Le projet a été sélectionné par le Conseil de le Recherche de l'ULg dans
le cadre des fonds spéciaux de recherche. Le projet examine la
pertinence de la musique populaire dans les débats théoriques et
politiques sur l'incorporation des immigrés et sur la diversité dans les
villes en situation migratoire et post-migratoire.

Séminaire scientifique thématique INTEGRIM Work Package 2:
Dans le cadre du 7ème programme cadre, le réseau de formation
Intégration et Migrations internationales : trajectoires et politiques
d’intégration , le centre d’études de l’ethnicité et des migrations
(CEDEM) de l’Université de Liège a organisé le deuxième séminaire
scientifique thématique (WP 2 sur la citoyenneté et la participation
politique). Ce séminaire s’intitulait « Les politiques multiculturelles dans
les entités fédérées ». Plus d'info.
LAFLEUR Jean-Michel and SANCHEZDOMINGUEZ Maria - The political choices
of emigrants voting in home country
elections: A socio-political analysis of the
electoral behaviour of Bolivian external
voters
What variables influence the electoral behaviour of citizens voting in
home country elections from abroad? Despite the growing interest of
migration scholars for the topic of external voting, this question remains
largely unanswered. Basing ourselves on the existing political science
literature on electoral behaviour and on the migration literature on
immigrants' participation in host country politics, we isolate different
hypotheses that explain emigrants' preferences in home country politics.
We then build four models of voters based on these hypotheses: the
social group voter, the ideological voter, the interest-driven voter, and
the transnational voter. In the second part of the paper, we verify the
validity of these models using the results of a survey carried out with
Bolivian emigrants who took part in the 2009 Bolivian presidential
election from abroad. Overall, this article identifies the drivers of
immigrant transnational political participation and contributes to current
debates on social remittances. Full text (PDF).

catholiques en Wallonie. Sont inclus dans cette analyse les
développements récemment introduit par le nouveau décret relatif à la
tutelle sur la gestion du temporel des cultes reconnus modifiant le Code
de la démocratie locale et de la décentralisation adopté par le Parlement
wallon ce 12 mars 2014, entrant en vigueur le 1er janvier 2015.
