Cadet Comeau died suddenly on Tuesday, August 4 after falling ill while attending the Greenwood Cadet Training Centre at 14 Wing Greenwood: “I was deeply saddened to hear of the death of 13-year-old Saint John Air Cadet Gabriel Comeau who was attending a three week course at the Greenwood Cadet Training Centre. I have been told by those close to him that Gabriel loved being a part of Air Cadets and he was so happy when he finally reached the age of 12 that he could sign up and be with his two older brothers to share the experience of Air Cadets together. “Our summer training program involves thousands of Canadian youth ages 12 - 18 who are offered a very wide range of experiences and opportunities and we take the responsibility to protect the young people in our care very seriously. As is our practice in the event of any serious incident an investigation is underway. “The Cadet organization is a national network and this tragic loss is being felt across our entire institution. We can only imagine the tremendous sadness of his family and close friends and our focus is on supporting and caring for Cadet Comeau’s family, fellow cadets and instructors at this time. “On behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces, I offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Cadet Comeau as well as his extended cadet family that includes the cadets and staff of the Greenwood Cadet Training Centre and 161 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Saint John.” Submitted Both Branches of the Cold Lake Public Library have French Materials available. Jeff Gaye “Never be first, never be last, and never volunteer for anything.” You might have heard this early in your career. It used to be sound advice for surviving basic training. The less you were noticed the easier your course would be, and goodness knows you’ll be given enough work to do without asking for more. Ironically though, pitching in to get things done is a big part of military culture. On the job, it’s teamwork. In the community, it’s volunteerism. The Military Police motorcycle relay (see page 3) brought that home last week. The MPs operate a fund for blind children, through which parents can get financial help with educational tools and materials, and aids for daily living. It’s run on a volunteer basis and last year the ride raised $129,000 nationally ($25,000 of that was raised in Cold Lake). The Grand Centre Lions Club kicked in $1,000 and 784 Wing of the Air Force Association of Canada (AFAC) contributed $2,000. These funds were raised by volunteer effort as well. If you are looking for an opportunity to volunteer in Cold Lake, you can approach agencies directly and offer your time – hospitals, seniors’ centres, libraries, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, the Dr Margaret Savage Crisis Centre and many other agencies will be happy to speak with you. Or you can help out through churches, youth clubs and sports or cultural organizations. If you have time to give but no specific idea of where you want to help, a service club or other association might be a good fit. Groups like the Lions, the AFAC, the Legion and others support all kinds of community activity through fundraising and through active participation. And they have a great time doing it. These associations thrive on camaraderie and sharing a common interest. By joining a local branch of a national organization, you’ll find you have instant friends if ever you move someplace else. Every small contribution makes Cold Lake a better place, which is reward in itself. And the good feeling you get – actually documented as a “helper’s high” – has ongoing benefits for your mental and physical health. Lower blood pressure, lower stress levels, less depression and increased selfesteem are among the benefits of helping out. One study has shown that your prospects for a longer life are improved more by volunteering than by exercising four times a week. Most of us want to do our part, but sometimes getting started is the only obstacle. Once you decide how you’d like to contribute, all the benefits of giving are a phone call away. From the Editor’s Desk News Tuesday, August 11, 2015 The Courier News & Publishing Page 3 Cold Lake a Hot Stop for MP Relay Jeff Gaye Cold Lake is getting a reputation with the biker crowd. Specif ically, riders in the annual National Military Police Motorcycle Relay Ride (NMPMRR) have come to see Cold Lake as a welcoming stop on the ride. The relay raises money for the MP Blind Children’s Fund, a charity that supports blind and visuallyimpaired young people. Any family, military or civilian, may apply for funding. Bob Edwards, national chair of the NMPMRR committee, said Cold Lake is the largest fundraiser across Canada. Last year the ride raised $129,000 for the fund, with $25,000 of that coming from Cold Lake. Cpl Terrence MacDonald and Cpl Angie Duffield of 11 MP Flight co-chaired the local committee this year. Over the weekend relay riders and local participants enjoyed a poker run, raffles, a silent auction and a barbecue and dance with live entertainment by Sound Barrier. Local service organizations, including the Grand Centre Lions Club and 784 Wing of the Air Force Association of Canada, supported the campaign with large donations. B o u n d a r y Motorsports of Lloydminster offered a 2015 Victory crosscountry touring bike if a poker run participant matched the “mystery hand.” The prize went unclaimed. The bikes rumbled out of Cold Lake with a Military Police escort en route to Wainwright on Sunday. It doesn’t give you much coverage if you’re injured or disabled.” She said, even with approval to play, “good civilian insurance should be your Plan A – military coverage is your backup plan.” Out-Service Sports also includes support for elite athletes to compete at a higher level. “We fund ten or twelve athletes a year from Cold Lake,” Yearley said. Yearley said three local members have been supported this year under the High Performance Program, which is administered nationally. The funding defrays some of the costs of participating in high-level competition in sports not otherwise offered by the CAF, or at a level beyond that of the military sports program. MCpl Giancarlo Pavone of 10 FTTS is a soccer official whose passion for the sport has led him to officiate at elite competitions, including professional matches Maj John Sullivan of 4 Air Reserve Flight received funding to attend the Senior Mens FastPitch Championships, which are combined with the International Softball Federation (ISF) certification clinic. ISF certification will qualify Maj Sullivan to umpire international games. And Cpl Adrian Locke of 409 Squadron recently qualified for the national powerlifting championship after tying a Canadian record at a local meet. “I really had a lot of great support that was initiated through PSP,” Cpl Locke said. Military Sports Coordinator Jerry Ingham told Cpl Locke that there was no local funding available to him, but that he was eligible to submit for national support. Ingham and Yearley helped prepare his funding request for national consideration. Cpl Locke’s 300kg squat lift in a local competition helped to qualify him for Nationals. While there, though, “I was a bit over-zealous on the squat.” While he was aiming for a 305kg squat lift, he ended up lifting 290 in the squat, 182.5 on the bench and 282.5 in the dead lift. The payoff for the participant and for the CAF, he says, is similar to military sports. Powerlifting enhances the athlete’s strength and fitness levels, and even though it’s an individual competition, there’s an element of teamwork. “It’s a pride thing,” Cpl Locke said. “It’s a great goal-oriented sport, it’s all about achieving personal bests. You train Military members pursuing fitness, health and recreation are not necessarily limited to activities offered by the military sports program. It’s a wide world of sports out there, and 4 Wing Fitness and Sports Manager Josey Yearley says the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is able to support members’ interests beyond what is offered in-house. While Personnel Support Programs offers a wide selection of traditional sports programs, from local recreational activity to national and international competition, it’s impossible to provide programming for every sport a member might want to play. This is where Out-Service Sports policies apply. Yearley says a military member can seek approval to participate in civilian sports, even if that same sport is offered on the base. “Members will ask approval to play sports we don’t offer, like rugby,” she said. “But it’s important to know, for your medical and pension coverage, that John Costello, Costello Newfoundland Photography you need approval even to play an approved sport Cpl Adrian Locke tied the Canadian record in the like volleyball downtown.” squat lift really hard, you work really hard. Members may seek an OT for a number of reasons – better career prospects or a better fit with their personal aptitudes are often the motivation. Physical or medical limitations can sometimes come into play, or an NCM might see an opportunity to commission from the ranks and pursue a career as an officer. Capt Wall said an OT can be beneficial for a member’s career, but it’s an important decision that shouldn’t be taken lightly. “The thorough training or re-training in a new occupation is a big personal investment of your time and effort, and there are often rank implications to starting over in a new occupation,” he said. “You “Is their intended new want to have a clear occupation really a good understanding of what fit? It is in living and interacting that we learn to deal with anger, to forgive, to build selfesteem. The ability to work together and to love one another is only possible when persons engage in dialogue with one another. Dialogue is the successful verbal exchange of thoughts and feelings between two people. That exchange can be pleasant or the cause of conflict. It is always a two-way process in which people discuss issues that are important to them. Dialogue entails verbal exchanges of sentiments, opinions, ideas and observations.
