Statement Regarding
the Death of
Cadet Gabriel Comeau
DND
RAdm
Jennifer
Bennett, Chief Reserves
and Cadets, issued the
following statement on
behalf of the Canadian
Armed Forces regarding
the death of Cadet
Gabriel Comeau. Cadet
Comeau died suddenly
on Tuesday, August 4
after falling ill while
attending the Greenwood
Cadet Training Centre at
14 Wing Greenwood:
“I
was
deeply
saddened to hear of the
death of 13-year-old
Saint John Air Cadet
Gabriel Comeau who was
attending a three week
course at the Greenwood
Cadet Training Centre. I
have been told by those
close to him that Gabriel
loved being a part of Air
Cadets and he was so
happy when he finally
reached the age of 12
that he could sign up
and be with his two older
brothers to share the
experience of Air Cadets
together.
“Our summer training
program
involves
thousands of Canadian
youth ages 12 - 18 who
are offered a very wide
range of experiences
and opportunities and
we take the responsibility
to protect the young
people in our care
very seriously. As is our
practice in the event
of any serious incident
an
investigation
is
underway.
“The
Cadet
organization
is
a
national network and
this tragic loss is being
felt across our entire
institution. We can only
imagine the tremendous
sadness of his family and
close friends and our
focus is on supporting
and caring for Cadet
Comeau’s family, fellow
cadets and instructors at
this time.
“On behalf of the
Canadian Armed Forces,
I offer my deepest
sympathies
to
the
family and friends of
Cadet Comeau as well
as his extended cadet
family
that
includes
the cadets and staff of
the Greenwood Cadet
Training Centre and
161 Royal Canadian Air
Cadet Squadron in Saint
John.”

“Never be first,
never be last, and never
volunteer for anything.”
You might have
heard this early in
your career. It used to
be sound advice for
surviving basic training.
The less you were
noticed the easier your
course would be, and
goodness knows you’ll
be given enough work
to do without asking for
more.
Ironically though,
pitching in to get things
done is a big part of
military culture. On
the job, it’s teamwork.
In the community, it’s
volunteerism.
The Military Police
motorcycle relay (see
page 3) brought that
home last week. The
MPs operate a fund for
blind children, through
which parents can get
financial help with
educational tools and
materials, and aids for
daily living. It’s run on
a volunteer basis and
last year the ride raised
$129,000
nationally
($25,000 of that was
raised in Cold Lake).
The Grand Centre
Lions
Club
kicked
in $1,000 and 784
Wing of the Air Force
Association of Canada
(AFAC)
contributed
$2,000. These funds
were raised by volunteer
effort as well.
If you are looking
for an opportunity to
volunteer in Cold Lake,
you can approach
agencies
directly
and offer your time
– hospitals, seniors’
centres,
libraries,
Big
Brothers
and
Big Sisters, the Dr
Margaret Savage Crisis
Centre and many other
agencies will be happy
to speak with you.
Or you can help
out through churches,
youth
clubs
and
sports
or
cultural
organizations.
If you have time to
give but no specific idea
of where you want to
help, a service club or
other association might
be a good fit. Groups
like the Lions, the
AFAC, the Legion and
others support all kinds
of community activity
through
fundraising
and through active
participation.
And they have a
great time doing it.
These
associations
thrive on camaraderie
and sharing a common
interest. By joining
a local branch of a
national organization,
you’ll find you have
instant friends if ever
you move someplace
else.
Every
small
contribution
makes
Cold Lake a better
place, which is reward
in itself. And the
good feeling you get –
actually documented as
a “helper’s high” – has
ongoing benefits for
your mental and physical
health. Lower blood
pressure, lower stress
levels, less depression
and increased selfesteem are among the
benefits of helping out.
One study has shown
that your prospects
for a longer life are
improved more by
volunteering than by
exercising four times a
week.
Most of us want
to do our part, but
sometimes
getting
started is the only
obstacle. Once you
decide how you’d like
to contribute, all the
benefits of giving are a
phone call away.

Cold Lake a Hot Stop for MP Relay

Cold
Lake
is
getting a reputation with
the biker crowd.
Specif ically,
riders in the annual
National Military Police
Motorcycle Relay Ride
(NMPMRR) have come
to see Cold Lake as a
welcoming stop on the
ride.
The
relay
raises
money for the MP
Blind Children’s Fund,
a charity that supports
blind
and
visuallyimpaired young people.
Any family, military or
civilian, may apply for
funding.
Bob
Edwards,
national chair of the
NMPMRR
committee,
said Cold Lake is the
largest fundraiser across
Canada. Last year the
ride raised $129,000 for
the fund, with $25,000
of that coming from
Cold Lake.
Cpl
Terrence
MacDonald and Cpl
Angie

of

the
local
committee
this year. Over the
weekend relay riders
and local participants
enjoyed a poker run,
raffles, a silent auction
and a barbecue and

with
live
entertainment by Sound

Local
service
organizations, including
the Grand Centre Lions
Club and 784 Wing of
the Air Force Association
of Canada, supported
the campaign with large
donations.

PSP Supports Non-Military Sports Options
Jeff Gaye
And for members who
want to play downtown,
civilian insurance is
critical.
“When
you
pay your league fees,
insurance is sometimes
included,” Yearley said,
“but often that’s thirdparty liability. It doesn’t
give you much coverage
if you’re injured or
disabled.”
She said, even with
approval to play, “good
civilian insurance should
be your Plan A – military
coverage is your backup
plan.”
Out-Service Sports
also includes support for
elite athletes to compete
at a higher level. “We
fund ten or twelve
athletes a year from Cold
Lake,” Yearley said.
Yearley said three
local
members
have
been supported this
year under the High
Performance
Program,
which is administered
nationally. The funding
defrays some of the
costs of participating in
high-level
competition
in sports not otherwise
offered by the CAF, or at
a level beyond that of the
military sports program.
MCpl

of 4 Air Reserve Flight
received funding to attend
the Senior Mens FastPitch

which are combined
with the International
Softball Federation (ISF)
certification clinic. ISF
certification will qualify
Maj Sullivan to umpire
international games.
And Cpl Adrian
Locke of 409 Squadron
recently qualified for
the national powerlifting
championship after tying
a Canadian record at a
local meet.
“I really had a lot of
great support that was
initiated through PSP,”
Cpl Locke said. Military
Sports Coordinator Jerry
Ingham told Cpl Locke
that there was no local
funding available to him,
but that he was eligible
to submit for national
support. Ingham and
Yearley helped prepare
his funding request for
national consideration.
Cpl Locke’s 300kg squat lift in a local
competition helped to
qualify him for Nationals.
While there, though, “I
was a bit over-zealous
on the squat.” While
he was aiming for a 305kg squat lift, he ended
up lifting 290 in the
squat, 182.5 on the bench
and 282.5 in the dead
lift.
The payoff for the
participant and for the
CAF, he says, is similar
to
military
sports.
Powerlifting
enhances
the athlete’s strength and
fitness levels, and even
though it’s an individual
competition, there’s an
element of teamwork.
“It’s a pride thing,”
Cpl Locke said. “It’s a
great goal-oriented sport,
it’s all about achieving

interests beyond what is

where Out-Service Sports

Yearley
says
a

that same sport is offered

WPSO Can Help With Occupational Transfers
Jeff Gaye
4 Wing Personnel
Selection Officer Capt
Kyle Wall says this is
his busy season for
processing Occupational
Transfer (OT) requests.
Members may seek
an OT for a number of
reasons – better career
prospects or a better
fit with their personal
aptitudes are often the
motivation. Physical or
medical limitations can
sometimes come into
play, or an NCM might
see an opportunity to
commission from the
ranks and pursue a career
as an officer.
Capt Wall said an OT
can be beneficial for a
member’s career, but it’s
an important decision
that shouldn’t be taken
lightly.
“The

relationships are not
easy, nor are they
automatic. It is in living

learn to deal with anger,
to forgive, to build selfesteem. The ability to
work together and to
love one another is only
possible when persons
engage in dialogue with
one another.
Dialogue
is
the

people. That exchange
can be pleasant or the
cause of conflict. It is
always a two-way process
in which people discuss
issues that are important
to them. Dialogue entails
verbal
exchanges
of
sentiments,
opinions,
ideas and observations.
Dialogue makes a person
vulnerable as he or she

feedback.

HOROSCOPES
Capricorn - December 22 - January 19
Brace yourself, Capricorn. A blast from the past is about to
return to your life full swing. Welcome them but be wary. They
could have ulterior motives.
Aquarius - January 20 - February 18
Aquarians can be serious, sometimes a little too serious. If
you haven’t had fun in a while, this is the week to go for it.
Responsibilities will be few.
Pisces - February 19 - March 20
You’re an eager beaver, Pisces, and that is going to serve you
well when you are given more than your fair share of the work.
You will finish on time.
Aries - March 21 - April 19
Up the ante, Aries. You’ll see little progress without some
incentives. A love triangle develops in your inner circle. Mum is
the word. Blessings multiply.
Taurus - April 20 - May 20
Oops, Taurus. You open mouth and insert foot at a meeting yet
again. Apologize and make a mental note not to let it happen
again. A prize arrives.
Gemini - May 21 - June 21
It’s a mess for sure, but it has nothing to do with you. Back off,
Gemini. A lucrative offer deserves a second look. A trip could
be in order.
Cancer - June 22 - July 22
Rush, rush, rush! You’re moving so fast these days that you’re
running yourself ragged, Cancer. Take time out to relax before
your health suffers.
Leo - July 23 - August 22
Cheer up, Leo. Trying times are coming to an end, as
expectations are finally understood and routines are developed.
A pal pushes the envelope.
Virgo - August 23 - September 22
Success could be yours, Virgo, if you allow it. You’re much too
hard on yourself. Forge ahead with confidence, and you will get
the results you seek.
Libra - September 23 - October 22
You’re right, Libra. A friend is in total denial. Try as you might
you will not get them to see the truth until they are ready.
Property plans get underway.
Scorpio - October 23 - November 21
Hush, Scorpio. It’s not your secret to tell. The pride of a loved
one serves as a major stumbling block. Be patient. They will
come around.
Sagittarius - November 22 - December 21
Hot weather inspires cool fun. Invite some buddies along. The
web of opportunity continues to build at work. Get ready to jump
on it, Sagittarius.
