haque année, lorsque la fin du mois d‘octobre
arrive, les New Yorkais se réjouissent à l’idée
de pouvoir à nouveau s’élancer sur la glace de
la patinoire de Central Park, 5 minutes à pieds
au sud de la 59ème rue ouest et de la 6ème Avenue, un écrin au cœur de Manhattan, entouré
par les immeubles qui ont rendu ce panorama célèbre. Depuis
deux ans le Wollman Rink voit pourtant s’élancer un autre type
de compétiteurs : les chevaux de CSO et de dressage viennent,
en effet, occuper les lieux le temps d’un weekend. Le succès remporté par la première édition a conforté les organisateurs qui ont
proposé cette année un certain nombre de nouveauté. Ainsi, le 23
septembre, à 18h, des chevaux arabes foulaient pour la première
fois cette carrière improvisée. Le premier Arabian US Open pouvait commencer.
Derrière cette aventure, une femme déterminée et une association
dont les efforts conjoints ont rendu cette aventure possible : Cynthia Richardson et l’Arabian Horses Association (AHA), qui gère
toutes les manifestations de chevaux arabes en Amérique du Nord.
Elles contactent les organisateurs Mark Bellissimo et Michael
Stone de l’International Equine Group (IEG) « Je leur ai proposé
d’inclure des chevaux arabes ; comme ils souhaitaient donner de
l’ampleur à l’événement et comme les arabes sont la race dont
descendent les chevaux légers montés, la combinaison était parfaite. » raconte Cynthia, présidente de l’AHA. L’organisation d’un
show de chevaux arabes en ouverture de l’événement, le mercredi
soir, ainsi qu’un créneau pour les présenter au public lors des deux
matinées gratuites du samedi et dimanche, furent ainsi décidées.
« Cela a été un véritable travail de groupe auquel de nombreuses

Every year at the end of October, New Yorkers look forward
to the re-opening of the ice ring in Central Park, a five minute
walk from W 59th Street and 16th Avenue. This special place
in the heart of the city is surrounded by Manhattan splendid
skyline. For two years now the Wollman Rink has been seeing
a new kind of sportsmen: show jumping and dressage horses
have come to the city and settled down for a weekend. The
success of the previous show led the organisers to offer the
public novelties. So, on September 23rd, Arabian horses
walked on the sand of the ring for the first time in the history
of New York. The first Arabian US Open could start.
Behind this extraordinary adventure stand a very determined
woman and an association whose joined efforts were paramount in the making of this event: Cynthia Richardson and
the Arabian Horse Association (AHA) which governs the Arabian events in North America. They contacted the organisers,
Mark Bellissimo and Michael Stone from the International
Equine Group (IEG) « I asked if the Arabians could be part
of the show. Since they were looking to expand it and Arabians being the original breed of light riding horses, it was a
perfect fit » said Cynthia the president of the association. The
organisation of an Arabian show to open the event on Wednesday evening as well as a spot in the Saturday and Sunday
matinees to tell the story of Arabians were thus negotiated.
« This has very much been a group effort and many people
have contributed. We needed a major sponsor to start the
show for this year and Aljassimya Farm of Doha, Qatar,
Sheikh Jassim Bin Khalifa Al Thani, stepped up to help us.
We could not have had the show without his support. »

La géographie, certes exceptionnelle, des lieux ne permettait pas
cependant d’accueillir un grand nombre de chevaux. Il ne sera
jamais possible d’en présenter plus de 50, répartis dans 10 classes
de 5 participants : yearlings mâles et femelles, junior mâles et
femelles, senior mâles et femelles, pour les classes présentées en
main et Arabian Hunter Pleasure, Arabian Country English Pleasure, Arabian Western Pleasure et Arabian Native Costume pour
les classes montées. Ont répondu présent des chevaux venant de
toute l’Amérique du Nord ainsi que des chevaux étrangers (voir
les résultats à la fin du magazine).
Le Dr. Nasr Marei était l’un des cinq juges invités à New York
pour ce premier Arabian US Open, une expérience qu’il a beaucoup apprécié. « L’organisation de ce show était excellente et le
lieu éblouissant avec les gratte-ciels de New York en toile de fond.
Un décor exceptionnel, à couper le souffle. Voir ces chevaux dans
Central Park était passionnant. J’espérais en voir plus, malheureusement les propriétaires et éleveurs n’ont pas saisi cette opportunité de présenter leurs chevaux. Je pense que cela a été un très
bon show et je les encourage vraiment à y participer l’année prochaine. Et il faut louer les grands efforts fait par AHA. »
Par ailleurs au cours des deux matinées, Cynthia a pu faire découvrir à un public néophyte l’histoire de la race, ses caractéristiques

physiques et psychologiques, amenant ainsi les spectateurs à comprendre combien ses chevaux sont polyvalents, avec l’aide de
cinq cavaliers montant des chevaux d’origine et d’utilisation très
diverses.
Pour les New Yorkais comme pour les autres cavaliers de CSO
ou de dressage, un parterre relevé qui ne contenait pas moins de
deux championnes du monde de dressage, Charlotte Dujardin,
venue pour présenter une master class, et Isabelle Werth qui remporta cette compétition, ce fut une soirée mémorable : « Les New
Yorkais ont adoré. La majorité n’avait jamais vu de chevaux arabes
et ont été séduit par leur beauté, leur capacité athlétique, leur polyvalence et l’affection qui les lie à leur propriétaire/présentateurs.
C’était amusant de discuter avec les cavaliers habitués aux Demisang. Ils ne connaissaient pas bien les chevaux arabes ; leur déplacement aérien, la manière dont ils aiment jouer, prêts également
à travailler dès qu’on le leur demande. Cela les a fasciné », souligne Cynthia.
« Nous avons voulu démontrer que nos chevaux étaient incroyablement beaux, avec une forte conformation qui leur a permis
d’être à l’origine de toutes les races les plus importantes de chevaux montés. Mais qu’ils sont également des chevaux qui aiment
qu’on les fasse travailler et qu’on les monte. Dans la classe Country
English Pleasure, les chevaux étaient montés par des amateurs.
J’ai souvent entendu le commentaire suivant « Ces cavaliers ont
vraiment l’air de bien s’amuser ». Comment ne pas ressentir d’excitation quand l’on monte son cheval à Central Park devant une
foule internationale ? », ajoute-t-elle.

Le second Arabian US Open est déjà programmé le 21 septembre
2016. Il fera à nouveau l’ouverture du Rolex Central Park Show
et Cynthia s’attend à voir arriver de nombreux candidats, notamment de l’étranger, l’événement ayant généré beaucoup d’enthousiasme. Une belle victoire pour cette femme et pour l’association
qui ont pris à cœur de promouvoir ce cheval que nous aimons tant
et qui a vécu cette expérience intensément. « J’ai fait beaucoup
de voyages à Central Park cet été, pendant la préparation. Central
Park est le parc le plus animé du monde. C’était excitant de voir
la patinoire se transformer en une remarquable carrière, avec les
décorations et les immeubles qui se découpaient sur l’horizon.
C’était époustouflant. Puis notre premier cheval est entré sur le
ring… jamais je n’avais été aussi fière de nos chevaux arabes. Un
grand merci à tous les propriétaires et exposants qui nous ont soutenus. J’attends avec impatience l’année prochaine. » Nul doute
que ce nouveau show va s’imposer dans la galaxie de tous ceux
qui ont donné au cheval arabe ses lettres de noblesse.

The exceptional geography of the place didn’t come without
constraint, the stalling being very limited inside the park.
The most the show will ever have is fifty horses entered in
10 classes with 5 horses in each: yearlings males and females,
colts, fillies, senior males and females for the halter classes,
Arabian Hunter Pleasure, Arabian English Pleasure, Arabian Western Pleasure and Arabian Native Costumes for the
ridden classes. Horses came from all over North America
and several from abroad. (Results to be found at the end of
the magazine).
Dr. Nasr Marei was part of the panel of five judges who
came to New York, an experience he enjoyed: « The organization of the show was excellent and the venue stunning,
with New York skyscrapers serving as a backdrop. A very
unique and breathtaking setting. Seeing these horses performing in Central Park was very exciting. I was hoping to
see more, unfortunately horse owners and breeders did not
cease this great opportunity to show their horses. The show
went very well in my opinion and I do encourage them to
take part next year. A great effort was done by AHA that
should be commended for. »
Besides the show, during the two matinees, Cynthia introduced the breed to a neophyte audience, presenting the history of the Arabian horse, their physical and mental characteristics, leading the spectators to understand how versatile
these horses could be with the help of five riders and their
mounts from various origins and use.
For the New Yorkers and the other contenders in show jumping and dressage, a selected bunch who included two world
champions in dressage, Charlotte Dujardin who gave a master class and Isabelle Werth who was to win the competition, it was a night to remember : « The New Yorkers had a
great time. To many, this was their first exposure to the
Arabian horse and their beauty, athletic ability, versatility
and love for their owners/exhibitors. It was fun to talk to
the warmblood riders. They also had not spent much time
around Arabians and were quite fascinated with our horses,
how light they are on their feet and how playful they can
be, yet willing to go to work at any time. » remembered
Cynthia.
« We set out to demonstrate that our horses are incredibly
beautiful with strong conformation that has made them the
foundation of all the major riding breeds, but they are horses
that enjoy having a job and love to be ridden. In the Country
English Pleasure Class, all the horses were ridden by ama-

teurs. A comment I overheard, was «those riders are really
having a good time». How exciting can it get to ride your
own horse in Central Park in front of an international
crowd? », she added.
The second Arabian US Open is already scheduled on September 21st, 2016. It will once again be the opening night
for the Rolex Central Park Show. Cynthia expects many entries
from American and foreign horses as the show has already
generated a lot of excitement. This is a great victory for this
woman and the AHA who take to heart the promotion of that
horse we love so much and an adventure she lived intensely.
« I made several trips to Central Park this summer during the
planning of the show. Central Park is the busiest City Park
in the World. I was excited and then to watch the Ice Rink be
transformed into an outstanding riding arena that was breath
taking with all the decorations and the New York skyline.
Then, our first horse entered the ring and I could not have
been more proud of our Arabian horses. A huge thank you to
all of the owners and exhibitors that supported this new venture and looking forward to next year! » No doubt that the
show is going to become a trademark in the galaxy of all
those which made the Arabian horse famous.
