Also a big thank you to all our members, for believing in this board to create the first Historical and Genealogical Society for Scott. It has been an exciting 6 months for all of us. What started as a few people getting together to say “yes, we want a Scott Historical and Genealogical Society” to having over 40 members has been amazing. We set up a Scott Historic District committee which provided Fenstermaker with over 35 buildings that we felt should be included in an historic district. We were able to receive Non-Profit 501 (C) (3) status from the IRS, which makes the society eligible to apply for grants. A big thank you goes out to Dennis Carr for establishing our own website and creating our monthly newsletter, the Scott Crier. Merci beaucoup to Becca Begnaud, we have started monthly musical fundraisers. Through the fundraisers we have been able to purchase some video equipment to record not only the musical S O C I E T Y O r g a n i z a t i o n n o t e s events but other events. We have been fortunate to have a few monetary donations to help with the purchase of supplies. There is a French Café every Wednesday at The Coffee Depot for not only members but others to be able to enjoy an afternoon with French conversation. There are many members who have helped in many ways. June Broussard is always there to lend a hand. These are just a couple of the outstanding members that we have in our society. The Society voted to publish a book through Arcadia Publishing about the city of Scott as a major fundraiser. It was decided the time frame for the book would be from 1860s to 1960s. We have a deadline of May 2012 to have the book completed and sent to the publisher. On a personal note, it has been a privilege to serve as your president this year. I believe Scott has a great future and I am looking forward to see what the society can accomplish in the next 12 months! Thank you again, Pam Carr, President, SHGS V o l u m e 1 , I ss u e 7 CAFÉ FRANCAIS’ This little group has been continually active since its start. Ms Becca Begnaud started the group back in June of this year, and has met religiously every Wednesday since. The group is never the same in terms of who shows up. However, one thing remains constant, interested people show because they are interested in preserving the Cajun language. The group’s objective every week is to talk every day Cajun French. This writer has attended several of the sessions, and they are very committed to uphold this great gift and most willing to pass it on to those to wish to learn. They interpret: menus, books, newspapers, articles in French, and letters. They even discuss what you would find in each room of a house, and the French name of each item. What is happening Thank you again, Jeff and Sarah Laughlin. GUEST SPEAKER AT THE NOVEMBER MEETING Jean Kiesel, author of the “Lafayette” Images of America book published by Arcadia Publishing will be our guest speaker for the November meeting. This is the same type of book that the SHGS will publish for Scott. Jean Kiesel has been the Louisiana room librarian for more than 20 years at the Edith Garland Dupre’ Library at ULL. She will have a slide presentation and talk about how she put together the “Lafayette” book. SHGS BOARD MEETING 12 Jan 2010 P a g e 2 absence of the position of treasurer for the year 2012.
