between!fiction!and!non7fiction!is!straight7forward!and!easily!conveyed!to!child!readers,!
even!storytellers!may!not!have!given!much!thought!to!the!need!for!truth!in!fiction.!This!
workshop!addresses!the!ways!in!which,!even!in!an!imagined!story,!authors!have!the!option!
of!telling!the!truth!or!deceiving!children!about!the!world!they!live!in.!Three!ways!in!
particular!will!be!discussed:!(1)!clarifying!whether!the!story!is!factual!or!fictionalized;!(2)!
incorporating!things!that!actually!happened!into!an!otherwise!fictional!story;!and!(3)!

children!can!gain!power!and!reduce!their!vulnerability?!Participants!will!be!asked!to!

adults.!Of!course!a!story!can!be!single7purpose—say,!purely!for!entertainment.!But!we!do!
not!call!such!stories!literature!and!certainly!don’t!want!our!children!to!make!them!a!major!
part!of!their!diet,!any!more!than!we!want!them!to!make!candy!a!major!part!of!their!diet.!
After!taking!note!of!the!levels,!layers,!and!diversity!inherent!in!real!works!of!literature,!this!
presentation!zeros!in!on!one!sometimes7present!but!often7overlooked!quality:!the!
importance!of!literature!in!addressing!the!principal!problem!of!children!in!all!times!and!all!
places—that!of!their!essential!powerlessness.!With!examples!drawn!from!Rudyard!Kipling,!
J.K.!Rawlings,!and!Canadian!Governor!General!award!winner!Debra!Ellis,!I’ll!try!to!show!

the!present.!Long!before!the!written!word,!tales!existed!to!be!performed,!often!through!
ensemble!storytelling!and!performance.!They!continue!to!be!performed.!Mollel!shares!a!few!
examples!of!ensemble!storytelling!and!performance!of!tales,!historically!and!currently.!He!
also!shows!that!traditional!tales,!which!have!much!to!offer,!can!be!adapted!as!they!have!
