The Northern, Western and Central Africa office of the Range Wide Conservation
Program for Cheetah and African Wild Dogs, in collaboration with Chadian Wildlife Authorities,
has organised a National Action Plan workshop for the conservation of both species on the
16th and 17th of March 2015 in Tinga Camp, Zakouma National Park, Chad.
Taking advantage of the workshop logistics and the expertise present [Sarah DURANT
(WCS/IoZ-ZSL, cheetah), Tim WACHER (ZSL), Roseline BEUDELS-JAMMAR (CMS - Convention
on Migratory Species), Christine BREITENMOSER (IUCN Cat Specialist Group)], a two-days
AZA funded training session was provided to delegates attending the workshop on the 18th
and 19th of March 2015; most of whom have never experienced any training at this level
before.
Presented topics including practicals in the Park were:
* Research and monitoring: spoor counts, social science, radio collaring, tourist photos,
detection
dogs,
camera
traps
(driving
transects,
identifying
carnivore
spoors,
questionnaire practice, setting up camera traps to leave overnight).
*Conflict management: social science, verification of depredation events, coexistence
strategies.
* Introduction to CMS and the IUCN Cat SG.
After each presentation, participants were invited to ask questions and to tell whether
the methodology presented could be useful to meet their objectives in their particular
environment.
A questionnaire was distributed to delegates in order to gather their opinion on this
training session and results are presented at the end of this document.
DAY 1:
Wednesday 18th March 2015
SPOOR SURVEY
Into the wild: a spoor transect started at the edge of Tinga Camp. Along the dirt road,
explanations on how to set up transect and then, on how to identify and record information
on each encountered carnivore spoor were provided. Participants then took the lead…

ending point, GPS coordinates, species ID – here a hyena spoor, etc).
Back to Tinga Camp, a presentation on spoor survey methodology was done by Sarah
DURANT and Audrey IPAVEC.
This presentation included case studies in Serengeti NP, Tanzania and in WAP complex
(Burkina Faso, Benin and Niger).

him to identify different species in his
area: a useful tool to explore wildlife
diversity within an underexplored area.

Tim WACHER insisted on the importance of a smart camera positioning.
The afternoon was dedicated to the setting up of camera traps in the Machtour area.
Sarah DURANT and Tim WACHER explained the different parameters that have to be entered
into the camera trap software and the different steps to follow. Four groups were composed,
each one in charge of one camera trap setting up.

CAMERA TRAPPING
First hour the next morning, teams were carried out near the Machtour river to
pick up the camera traps and a debriefing on the results and discussion on encountered
difficulties were proposed back at the Camp.

A presentation of camera trapping use to

proposed, focusing on the grid design and
the relevance of this methodology to survey
rare species.
After lunch, Audrey IPAVEC presented the other methodologies to survey and monitor
cheetah and African wild dogs, exposing criteria to take into account to choose the relevant
one.

while participants were given a set of some photo cards representing main concerned species
and a template for a rapid assessment survey to establish presence.

« Cette session de formation est un plus pour nous. Elle était très souple et claire. Mais c’est

« Cette formation [camera trap] est très bonne pour un suivi efficace des carnivores aui sont
pour la plupart très actifs la nuit. L’exercice de reconnaissance des espèces à partir des
empreintes est très important pour un gestionnaire d’une aire protégée. Si le temps le
permettait, on allait apprendre à réaliser des empreintes à partir d’un moulage au plâtre. Ce

« La principale remarque c’est de disposer d’assez de temps … pour chercher à mettre en
évidence la présence de ces deux espèces à partir de cet outils dans une zone que l’on aura
définie comme zone de répartition écologique commune a ces deux espèces. Un exercice et

« Accorder plus d’importance à la conservation du guépard et lycaon et surtout à la protection
de ces deux espèces. »
« Je sensibiliserai autour de moi car je connais maintenant les menaces qui pèsent sur le
lycaon et le guépard. Je dirai aux écogardes de veiller particulièrement à ces deux espèces. »
« Je deviens attentif à toute question relative à ces deux espèces. »
