Luxembourg NEWSLETTER ISSUE 13 | February 2010 JUNIOR CHAMBER INTERNATIONAL - LUXEMBOURG Time for loving hearts and caring thoughts... Valentine’s Day! Yes, it’s commercial –it’s romantic... but if you think about it – it also gives you the opportunity to show your beloved ones how much they mean to you – to remember the importance of warm-heartedness, solidarity and care...locally and globally! It’s essential. It is so important and in everyday life we tend to forget this. We live our lives, we think about ourselves and our own situation – and compared to so many other places in the world – think of the situation in Haiti now - no matter what – our situation is really good! It’s a shame that we rarely “have time” to reflect and show a difference. But on the 14th of February TIME has come! When you go shopping to find the special Valentine’s gift for your dear one – take 5 minutes extra – think big and show the world that you care. Open your heart for a better world – as a JCI Member or Friend - as the active citizen you are! Inside this issue: Happy Valentine’s Day! This was the opening of the very interesting and informative presentation on the topic Luxembourg – after (?) the crisis held by the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Mr. Helminger. It was a great honour and pleasure to his clarification of the situation of Luxembourg. Openly and friendly he explained the situation today and the improvements planned in the near future and in the long run. His presentation briefed us on various challenges Luxembourg City is facing, as a Metro pole having more than 100.000 people commuting – crossing the border to come to work here every day. This special situation has an impact on topics such as the housing situation, where he pointed out the plan to build new urban areas and renovating other areas like at Centre Hamilius, Bld. Royal. Moreover, it was made clear that the mobility was another important issue, where Luxembourg City is focusing on reducing the individual use, improving the public transport system by renewing ‘Gare’, building new railway lines in areas like Esch and Kirchberg. Further the plan of a tram in Luxembourg City by 2016 was introduced to us. Additionally, the mobility also included the making of a lift from Pfaffenthal to the City Centre. search. The message that was clearly given to us at the end of his presentation was the importance of active citizens being the future and the need to getting Luxembourgish people integrated in JCI Luxembourg, which at the moment only has members of foreign nationality living in Luxembourg. (by Lene Pedersen) Further, integration is a highly important topic because of the 65% of nonLuxembourgers living in Luxembourg City. At this point the modernisation and the hotcity project were introduced as essential ways to improve the networking and living-together in the Centre. Last but not least, Mr. Helminger commented on the difficult situation in the financial sector today, why Luxembourg is now among other areas concentrating on Re- Next Monthly Meeting March, 10th @ 19h30 “Brasserie Abbaye Neumünster” 28, rue Münster - Luxembourg Special guest : Mr. Erich Francois Page 2 ING Marathon More events on page 12 >>> JCI E UROPE What is JCI Europe about? As you may know, during the last JCI World Congress in November 2009 in Tunisia, I had the chance to be elected as a member of JCI EUROPE. Many of you have already asked: What is JCI Europe standing for and what is your task there? Therefore I decided to write shortly about it to give you an overview and answer all your questions. JCI is present now in more then 105 countries in the world - from those 41 are in Europe. Around 35 JCI countries in Europe are really active and we have in total 32.000 members, which represent around 25% of the worldwide membership. In Europe, we are in the lucky situation that the number of JCI countries is constantly growing as well as the number of members. JCI EUROPE was founded in February 2004 and during the World congress in Fukuoka/Japan in November 2004 all JCI-NOMs from Europe became member of JCI Europe. Just one year later the 1st Board of JCI Europe was elected according to the new constitution. There are today 6 members in the Board: 1. The President, who is always the current Executive Vice President for Europe, elected for one year 2. General Secretary, who is always the current JCI Director for Europe, who can stay in the board for many years, depending on his contract 3. Four members, who are always elected during a World congress for the next 3 years, but each of them can be re-elected by the National Presidents in Europe for another 3 years. There is no time and age limit The four main goals of JCI Europe are: I. VISIBILITY / LOBBYING WITHIN THE EUROPEAN UNION • To have a legal body • To be recognized as the leading organization of young leaders and entrepreneurs in Europe • To be in permanent contact to European entities and deputies • To support NOMs and LOMs with contacts to European political Institutions II. Yours, Artur Immediate Past President JCI Luxembourg 2010 Executive Board of JCI Europe O UR P ROJECTS CYEL 2010 100% of the Young Entrepreneur winners have tried their chance! Soirée de Gala 2010 : 15 juin 2010 CYEL even if it is not a surprise, since we opened registration much more early than the previous years, we all have haste to welcome our first young entrepreneur. Experience taught us - the whole Jury – Candidate team, the whole CYEL team, all members of the JCI Luxembourg and all sponsors, partners and friends - that without hard work of searching and explaining we will not get any applicants… One of us know the next winner, we just need to persuade him to register to the 2010 edition of CREATIVE YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR 2010! And for that he should not hesitate to send a n e m a i l a t cyel.candidate@jcluxembour g.com or visit our website www.cyel.lu. Another good news on the side of the CYEL team since ATOZ confirmed us beginning of February an evolution of their sponsorship to the GOLD category. Isabelle Project Manager Just like BGL BNP Paribas had made it some months ago, ATOZ rewards in this way all the work of the different CYEL teams fulfilled in the past and prove us, by action, to what extent they believe in this competition and in our capacity to carry it always higher. CYEL 2010 Gala evening: 15 June 2010 After a budget-driven end of year, our main priority of the first quarter is the search for candidates. Today we are still waiting for the first registration and CYEL 2010 coordination meetings: 02 March, 16 March, 06 April, 20 April, 04 May, 18 May, 01 June. ATOZ, a high-end independent advisory firm offering a comprehensive and integrated range of tax and corporate finance services becomes Gold Sponsor of CYEL Award. Keith O’Donnell, Managing Partner, commented: “We are delighted to be associated with this prestigious yearly event “Creative Young Entrepreneur Luxembourg”. Since our creation, ATOZ has been recognized as a leader in its field, notably being awarded “Luxembourg Tax firm of the Year” for the last four years. Our growth and success in 5 years arose from a clear strategy, the commitment of our team, and the support of our people and clients around the world. The founders of our firm had an entrepreneurial mindset and were ready to pursue a market changing strategy that of a high-end specialist tax advisory firm. Our firm in turn is delighted to encourage creative entrepreneurs. Internally we promote Innovation, one of our core values. We have developed a program “Creating Together” to help our clients take advantage of Luxembourg’s unique framework for encouraging the development of intellectual property. Luxembourg is an attractive place that stimulates and creates research, is able to offer a lot of opportunities for Creative Young Entrepreneur. We wish to support young entrepreneurs in this adventure and share our experience with them”. Not long ago, the community project NothingButNets was introduced to JCI Members and Friends at a monthly meeting. Under the event of the Summer party the project was shortly introduced - but let’s look a bit deeper into the project, its partners and aims. In March 2008 JCI World-wide entered a partnership with the United Nation Foundations in order to support the Nothing But Nets Campaign dedicated to save lives by preventing malaria in Africa. The cooperation between JCI and UNF focuses on purchasing and distributing Long Lasting Insecticide Treated Nets (LLiNs), as well as educating children under five years and their families on their proper use. The target of JCI World-wide is to donate 1 million LLiNs by 2015. In Luxembourg JCI is only now starting up the community project, and needs volunteers and interested people to help making the project a great success. As mentioned the JCI ABBA Summer Party was the first event in order to collect money and make publicity for the project in our community. Now further campaigns and charity-events are needed to keep the project going. Among others, some ideas could be: - Contribute as an individual by buying a bed net online on http://www.jci.cc/nothingbutnet s - one bed net only costs $10,00. - Sign up as an individual fundraiser. - Sign up as a team captain, raising money for the project. These are only a few ideas, given by the official campaign. Surely, JCI Luxembourg Members and Friends can come up with more! The first meeting has already taken place, but as we are building up a specific team for this project - you can still get involved from the beginning Make a difference! Save lives! (by Lene Pedersen) Contact the Project Manager: Thomas Stackler: [email protected] So, think about how you and JCI Luxembourg could contribute to this important project and say your opinion out loud! - Creating ongoing local bed net awareness campaigns. Multi-twinning between small JCI countries in Europe (MILC-Summit) 1. Trainings 2. Local Community / Business 3. International visibility The aim of this cooperation is to create the best practice platform to learn from each other how to run projects (TOYP, CYEL), how to develop partnerships/ sponsorships with governments, institutions and companies and how to get international visibility during European Conferences and World Congresses. The first “MILC SUMMIT” will take place between the 3rd and the 5th of September 2010 in Malta. During this time we are going to visit this beautiful island. We will have one day for an official JCI training and also a workshop about sponsorship in small countries where we will exchange experiences and future ideas. Every year we will meet according to a rotation principle. Maybe next year JCI Luxembourg will welcome Malta, Island and Cyprus. I strongly encourage you to be a part of Luxembourgish delegation. For further information, details or if you want to run a MILC-Working-Group in Luxembourg, please contact the Director (by Luiza Sosna) Luiza Sosna: [email protected] GSM 691 410 371 Page 7 During the JCI World Congress in Hammamet/Tunisia in November 2009, the first Multi-Twinning agreement between small countries in Europe was singed! The initiative came from Artur Sosna, 2009 National President JCI Luxembourg and was very fast accepted by the other active members of those three countries. The idea behind this agreement is to exchange and to learn from each other. Here are the three areas of our common future collaboration: E VENTS Les coups tordus de Churchill Conférence exclusive de M. Bob Maloubier JCI Luxembourg a le plaisir d’organiser une conférence exceptionnelle à l’occasion de la sortie du livre de Robert Maloubier à Luxembourg. Beginning of January, during the winter party, 200 JCIpenguins and their friends celebrated and danced all night at the Marx Bar to raise money for the project “NothingButNets” – and to definitely say “good-bye” to their 2009 president Artur Sosna and welcoming their 2010 president Pedro Castilho. The entire benefit of 457 € was donated for the purchase of insecticide-treated bed nets to protect families in Africa from malaria spreading mosquitoes and to support the eradication of malaria, a disease which in Africa causes the death of one-fifth of all children un- der 5 years. and unforgettable happening! A dance competition and an award for the best costume, sponsored by OrientX, were the highlights of that night, during which DJ Marco managed to maintain the vibe at a peak. The bar and the lounge offered the possibility to network, make new friends and to welcome the New Year in a warm ‘arctic’ atmosphere. At this point we would like to warmly thank Bülent Sen from OrientX for the sponsoring, Marco Nobrega for the great music and work and last but not least Cameron Balnave and the staff of Marx Bar for their great commitment in making the party a fantastic Artur was deeply touched by the film with interviews with JCI members and VIP´s from Luxembourg dedicated to his presidential year. The film assembled highlights and events of last year, comments and reflexions on his personality. Pedro Castilho, the 2010 JCI National President: “Due to his outstanding personality, Artur created a supporting and innovative atmosphere. This will be a challenge and a benchmark for me.” He added: “This party was very important to me, as it resembles members and their friends and shows how vibrate JCI is. I am certain that many more occa- sions of this kind will follow...” And this is true! JCI will surely be active in many areas and come up with new ideas again and again… The next party will be organised in July, so watch out for the announcement of the date and be prepared! Until then, we would like to share some memories from the Happy Feet Party with you… (by Christina Hagehülsmann, Lene Pedersen and Luiza Sosna) P AST E VENTS Hot Stuff and Happy Feet Continued... With JCI Luxembourg growing the need for an efficient an d s u c c e s s f u l c o m munication has increased as well. Starting from a small trip around the imparting of information, it very quickly became an exciting journey full of challenges and adventures. During the last two months we have slowly but steadily been busy building up a new Communication team for JCI Luxembourg. This included identifying the needs, finding the necessary structure to support and promote JCI and defining the expected outputs. Consequently, the coordination of the communication team is intended to cover the needs and manage the outputs. In this context the communication coordinator is in charge of the interacting of four subteams. One team is responsible for the website, another group takes care of the ingoing media, a third group manages the outgoing media, and a fourth group ensures the editing of what you are reading right now - the newsletter. Every part is im-portant, and needs assist-ance… Are you talkative? Are you silent? Are you a skilled writer? Are you a designer? Are you skeptical? critical? positive? adventurous... or none of the above, but just curious? Then you are the right person. We need you... please contact: Join our journey! S PONSORS & W HO WE ARE Sponsors It’s about solid partnerships Partnering with corporate sponsors magnifies the impact of JCI projects as JCI create positive changes in Luxembourg. "Sponsorship is the key to moving forward,” says Sponsorship Consultant Jill Larson. “JCI can offer an amazing amount of value to partners. Companies want to support noble causes. And we can help to get them there.” But, what is in it for the partners? We aim at partnerships more than at sponsorships. The most important is what kind of value our organiza- tion offers to the potential partner as a network of young active citizens. The main question is: “how will the partner benefit from their partnership with us?” Therefore, we try to combine the value of JCI with the need of a company in order to create a partnership that is of mutual benefit. Some partners put their premises at our disposal at meetings or events, others provide drinks, others host our websites… Companies, that choose to become a partner of JCI, knows that they gain publicity and recognition in the community, as we include their name and logo in marketing materials and thank them publicly. Maintaining partnerships Our aim is to sustain an ongoing dialogue with our partners and make sure they know their support is Valuable to us. Therefore we keep partners informed of our project results and show how their contributions made the project possible. Their help really makes the difference.
