women and girls in our community.
We would like to congratulate all
the nominees of this year’s awards. The
City of Greater Sudbury is filled with
accomplished women who help make
our community a better place to live,
work, and raise a family.
We would like to thank our sponsors
and Gala guests for helping us honour
the Women of Distinction. Proceeds
from the Women of Distinction Awards
Gala help support the programs offered
by YWCA Sudbury.
Funds raised
at last year’s Gala went toward the
Power of Being a Girl Conference, an
educational and fun event reaching just
over 400 young girls.
This year’s Women of Distinction
recipients are trail blazers, care givers,
mentors, health promoters, and leaders
of system change. Their backgrounds
are varied, but what unites all of these
women is their dedication, leadership,
talent and innovation that contribute
toward improving the lives of all women
and girls in our community.

de filles de notre communauté. Nous
félicitons les candidates de cette année.
Le Grand Sudbury compte énormément
de femmes accomplies qui aident à
faire de notre communauté un meilleur
endroit où vivre, travailler et élever une
famille.
Nous
remercions
nos
commanditaires ainsi que les invitées et
invités au Gala qui rendent hommage
aux femmes de mérite. Les fonds
recueillis dans le cadre du Gala femmes
de mérite servent aux programmes
du YWCA Sudbury. Ceux amassés
l’an dernier ont permis d’appuyer la
conférence Place aux filles, une activité
éducative et amusante s’adressant à un
peu plus de 400 jeunes filles.
Cette année, les lauréates des prix
Femmes de mérite sont des pionnières,
des fournisseuses de soins, des
promotrices de la santé et des chefs
de file en matière de changement.
Elles proviennent de divers horizons,
mais leur dévouement, leur leadership,
leur talent et leur esprit d’innovation
les unissent pour un même objectif :
améliorer la vie de toutes les femmes et
filles de notre communauté.

La YWCA Sudbury est fière de présenter une activité
communautaire intitulée Place aux filles. Lancé à l’automne
2006, cet évènement de marque de la YWCA national a
connu un grand succès et suscité un grand enthousiasme.
Cette activité met l’accent sur les besoins de développement
des filles et des jeunes femmes. Pour la plupart des jeunes
femmes, l’adolescence est une période difficile et pleine de
défis. La conférence Place aux filles aide les participantes à
prendre conscience de leurs défis communs, à se conscientiser
et à viser des solutions personnelles et de groupe. Dans le
cadre de ce forum sur la sécurité et l’inclusion, on discute
de sujets touchant les filles et les jeunes femmes de notre
communauté, notamment les relations saines, et l’estime de
soi et l’image corporelle.
La conférence Place aux filles s’adresse aux filles des
septième et huitième années. Elle a lieu par l’entremise de
mentorat par les pairs, c’est-à-dire que de jeunes femmes
des écoles secondaires de la région appuient le processus en
parlant de leurs expériences. Ce format donne une pertinence
à toutes les discussions puisque les plus jeunes tirent profit de
l’expérience des filles plus âgées.
Nous avons réalisé qu’afin que la conférence ait encore
lieu à Sudbury, l’an prochain, et afin de susciter une fois de
plus ce niveau d’intérêt incroyable, il faudra mettre sur pied
une initiative de financement. Quelle meilleure façon que de
souligner la contribution de femmes de notre communauté à
l’avancement de femmes et de jeunes filles! Le Gala femmes
de mérite sera donc un outil de financement pour appuyer
la poursuite d’une conférence qui aidera à former de futurs
leaders.

MAUREEN Lacroix
Maureen Lacroix is a 2010
recipient of YWCA Sudbury’s Woman
of Distinction Award. She was the first
woman on the Board of the Sudbury
Regional Hospital and the first woman
to chair the Laurentian University
Board. Maureen established Sudbury’s
first social housing projects for women,
the Northern Regional Recovery Home
for Women (an addiction treatment
facility) and Genevra House (a shelter
for abused women). Maureen is a
strong advocate for the arts and was
instrumental in the establishment of
the Sudbury Theatre Centre. Maureen’s
extensive community involvement
includes numerous health related
committees.

En 2010, Maureen Lacroix a obtenu
le prix Femmes de mérite de la YWCA
de Sudbury. Elle a été la première
femme à siéger au Conseil de l’Hôpital
régional de Sudbury et à celui de
l’Université Laurentienne. Elle a mis
sur pied les premiers ensembles de
logements sociaux pour les femmes de
la ville, la Northern Regional Recovery
Home for Women (un centre de
désintoxication) et la maison Genevra
(une
maison
d’hébergement).
Elle
appuie ardemment les arts et a joué
un rôle déterminant dans la création
du Sudbury Theatre Centre. Dans
le cadre de sa vaste participation
communautaire, elle a siégé à de
nombreux comités et conseils de santé.
Elle est actuellement présidente du
Conseil de la Fondation du Nord pour
la recherche en cancérologie.

Harpist
Harpiste
Jane Best was born in Kingston,
Ontario and began learning piano
there as a child. Her music studies
continued in Toronto. Twenty years
ago she moved to Manitoulin Island,
to raise her family in the beautiful
fresh air surrounded by lakes and
trees.
Jane has directed children’s
choirs and church choirs in Gore
Bay, and presently she directs the
jana Best
Manitoulin Community Choir, a choir
of approximately 30 voices of many
ages, and a vocal quartet called In A
Chore which visits churches to sing
both a cappella and accompanied
music. She also teaches private music
lessons. A few years ago Jane began
to play harp, fulfilling a childhood
dream.
Together with her family
and friends she has recorded 2 CD’s
of her spiritual songs, and several of
her other choral pieces have been
published. Jane has a set of 4 small
harps and is available for small group
2009-10
beginner workshops.
C’est à Kingston (Ontario), son
lieu de naissance, que Jane Best a
commencé son apprentissage du
piano dès son enfance. Ses études
musicales se sont poursuivies
à Toronto. Il y a 20 ans, elle
déménageait sur l’île Manitoulin
pour y élever sa famille dans l’air
frais et un superbe paysage, entourée
de lacs et d’arbres. Elle a dirigé des
chorales d’enfants et d’église à Gore
Bay; elle est présentement à la tête
de la Manitoulin Community Choir
qui compte environ 30 membres
de tout âge, et s’occupe du quartet
vocal In a Chord, qui se produit
souvent dans les églises, de façon a
cappella et avec accompagnement
musical. Elle a donné également
des leçons particulières de musique.
Quelques années passées, Jane s’est
mise à l’apprentissage de la harpe, un
rêve d’enfance. En compagnie de sa
famille et d’amies, elle a enregistré
deux CD de chansons spirituelles et
plusieurs de ses partitions chorales
ont été publiées. Elle possède quatre
petites harpes et offre des ateliers en
petits groupes pour débutants.

folk songstress
La chanteuse folk
Jennifer Holub first came onto the
folk music scene when she performed
at the Northern Lights Festival Boreal
in July 2010 as the NLFB Meltdown
Winner. She released her debut
album “Names” at the festival and
is available at Records on Wheels in
Sudbury. Her music takes influence
from her years living all over Northern
Ontario - Blind River, Moosonee,

As Mayor of the City of Greater Sudbury,
I am pleased to welcome you to the Fifth
Annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards
Gala taking place in Greater Sudbury on
Saturday, May 14, 2011.
The Fifth Annual Women of Distinction
Awards celebrate exceptional women
within the community, their ongoing efforts,
dedication and leadership of strong, talented
and selfless women who help shape our city.
These awards couldn’t be possible
without the dedication of YWCA Sudbury.
This organization is a registered charity and
volunteer women’s organization, and is part
of a world-wide YWCA movement. It works
to empower all individuals to reach their full
potential in body, mind, and spirit.
On behalf of City Council, I would
like to thank all the volunteers for all their
exceptional hard work for making this
organization a place for women to come
together in their community.
À titre de mairesse de la Ville du Grand
Sudbury, je suis heureuse de vous accueillir
à la cinquième édition du gala Femmes de
mérite de la YWCA de Sudbury, qui aura lieu
au Grand Sudbury, le samedi 14 mai 2011.
On mettra alors en valeur des femmes
exceptionnelles et fortes de notre collectivité,
leurs efforts soutenus, leur dévouement
ainsi que leur leadership, leur talent et leur
altruisme à façonner notre ville.
Ces prix n’existeraient pas sans le
dévouement de la YWCA de Sudbury. Cet
organisme de bienfaisance enregistré, une
organisation féminine bénévole, est membre
du réseau mondial des YWCA. Il cherche

Distinction

crystal Larose
giving back, inspiring and living on her own terms
Crystal Larose, a special young
woman determined to give back to
her community and make a difference
in the life of women and girls,
attributes much of the person she
has become to overcoming many life
challenges. Despite being orphaned
at a young age, Crystal persevered
and completed a College program in
graphic design and advertising. She is
currently the art director for Sudbury
Living magazine.
She not only coaches a soccer
team for young girls and participates
in women’s roller derby team but
Crystal involved both groups in
fundraising for the Breast Cancer
Coalition where she now serves as
the Marketing and Fundraising Chair.
Actively involved since 2006, Crystal
played a leadership role in the Think
Pink fundraiser and was instrumental
in getting the Coalition involved in
the Dragon Boat Races.
From her participation in the
Women of the Future Conference
in 2010, Crystal agreed to mentor a
student at her work site, inspiring this
young student to enter the graphic
design field.
Crystal exemplifies
the spirit of the Young Women of
Distinction Award and we applaud
all her efforts and actions.

Jeune femme de
mérite
Crystal Larose est une jeune femme bien spéciale, qui est
déterminée à redonner à sa communauté, à faire la différence
pour les femmes et les filles, et qui attribue une bonne part de ce
qu’elle est devenue au fait d’avoir surmonté bien des obstacles.
Orpheline très jeune, elle a persévéré et terminé des études
collégiales en conception graphique et en publicité. Elle est
présentement directrice artistique du magazine Sudbury Living.
Entraîneuse d’une équipe de soccer de jeunes filles, elle
est également membre d’une équipe féminine de roller derby.
Elle a incité ces deux équipes à participer aux activités de
financement de la Coalition d’action du sein-Sudbury, dont
elle est actuellement présidente du Comité de marketing et de
financement. Elle participe activement au projet de financement
Think Pink depuis 2006 et a joué un rôle déterminant pour
inciter la Coalition à participer aux courses de canots-dragons.
Après avoir participé à la conférence Femmes de l’avenir en
2010, Crystal a accepté d’être mentore d’une élève au travail;
elle est ainsi une source d’inspiration pour cette dernière, qui
s’oriente vers la conception graphique. Crystal est un exemple
de l’esprit du prix Jeune femme de mérite. Félicitations!

sharon Baiden
blazing the trail for women in police services
As Director of Corporate Services for Greater
Sudbury Police Service, Sharon Baiden, has helped
change the landscape of police management, holding
a senior management position reporting directly to the
Chief of Police.
Recognized by the Ontario Association of Chiefs
of Police for her role as Chair of the annual conference
in Sudbury in 2009, Sharon is past chair of the Ontario
Police-Technology Information Cooperative. She now
serves on the training committee for OACP
and is the current Chair of the Finance
Committee.
In addition to her professional
responsibilities,
Sharon
also
volunteers for the Northern
Cancer Research Foundation,
having chaired the “Luncheon of Hope”
for three terms. She sits on the Board of
Directors for the Sudbury Theatre Centre
and Cambrian College Foundation.
In her commitment to women’s issues,
Sharon is a member of the Canadian
Federation of University Women and
is actively involved with the Women
of the Future organization. Sharon sits
on the advisory council of the Ontario
Women in Law Enforcement Association
which identifies, mentors and promotes
outstanding women in law enforcement.
A role model and example for all
women and girls, Sharon is a true Woman
of Distinction.

À titre de directrice des Services administratifs du Service de police
du Grand Sudbury, Sharon Baiden a participé à la transformation de la
direction puisqu’elle occupe un poste de cadre relevant directement
du chef de police.
L’Association des chefs de police de l’Ontario a reconnu sa
contribution dans son rôle de présidente du congrès annuel qui a eu
lieu à Sudbury en 2009. Sharon est également ancienne présidente
de la Coopérative de technologie et d’information des services
policiers l’Ontario. Elle siège présentement au Comité de formation
de l’Association des chefs de police de l’Ontario et préside le Comité
des finances.
Par ailleurs, Sharon est bénévole au sein de la Fondation du Nord
pour la recherche en cancérologie et a été présidente du Déjeuner de
l’espoir durant trois mandats. Elle siège au Conseil d’administration du
Sudbury Theatre Centre et à la Fondation du Collège Cambrian.
Dans le cadre de son attachement à la condition féminine, elle
est membre de la Fédération canadienne des femmes diplômées des
universités et œuvre activement au sein des Femmes de l’avenir. En
outre, elle siège au Conseil consultatif de l’Ontario Women in Law
Enforcement qui trouve des femmes exceptionnelles au sein des
organismes d’exécution de la loi, les encadre et les met en valeur.
Sharon est un modèle pour toutes les femmes et les filles; c’est
véritablement une femme de mérite.

vicky McIvor
working selflessly to better the lives
of individuals in need
An outstanding example of selfempowerment and service to others,
Vicky is living proof that one person
and many small acts of selfless
kindness can make a significant
difference in the lives of individuals
and our community.
During last year’s Xstrata
layoff, in addition to picketing
tenaciously for injured
workers, Vicki established
the Voices of Sisters of
Laid Off Workers. This
support group, bringing
together women of laid
off workers, provided
the support, strength
and comfort needed
to get their families
through a very difficult time and
demonstrated to women that they
have a voice.
Whether fundraising for a family
with a sick baby or victims of a
fire, providing Christmas gifts for a
family of four, or bringing groceries
and food from her own garden to
financially struggling individuals and
parishioners on fixed incomes, Vicky
takes it upon herself to step up and
help when people are in need.
Overcoming
her
own
life
challenges, Vicky is active in her
church ministry and has shown
incredible tenacity and courage in
her efforts to help others.
Vicky personifies the best of
community and social activism.

Lors des mises à pied chez Xstrata Nickel l’an dernier, en
plus de faire du piquetage avec ténacité au nom des travailleuses
et travailleurs blessés, elle a mis sur pied Voices of Sisters of Laid
Off Workers. Ce groupe de soutien rassemblant les femmes de
travailleurs mis à pied leur a offert un appui ainsi que la force
et le réconfort nécessaires en cette période très difficile, tout en
montrant aux femmes qu’elles pouvaient être entendues.
Vicky se fait forte d’aider les gens dans le besoin, en
recueillant des fonds pour une famille dont un bébé est malade,
pour les victimes d’un incendie, pour offrir des cadeaux de Noël
à une famille de quatre personnes, en apportant des denrées et
des aliments de son propre jardin à des gens ayant des difficultés
financières ou à des membres de sa paroisse ayant un revenu
fixe.
Vicky a surmonté ses propres défis. Elle participe activement
aux activités de son église et fait preuve d’une ténacité et d’un
courage incroyables dans le but d’aider les autres.
Elle personnifie le meilleur du militantisme communautaire
et social.

Lorsqu’elle était bénévole de la Société Elizabeth Fry,
Marian a œuvré auprès de jeunes femmes à risque. Au même
titre, au ministère de la Santé et des Soins de longue durée, elle
s’est faite porte-parole des personnes âgées tandis qu’au sein
de l’organisme The Rising Stars, elle sensibilise présentement
d’autres personnes de ce groupe d’âge à la vie active et saine.
En outre, dans son rôle d’institutrice de l’école du dimanche et
chef de file de Canadian Girls in Training (CGIT), elle a touché
bien des jeunes.
Marian pratique la méthode de danse et d’exercices Margaret
Morris depuis plus de 30 ans. Elle enseigne à des groupes de
tous les âges, surtout de façon bénévole. L’été dernier, à 82 ans,
elle a atteint le onzième et dernier niveau MMM. Marian a
consacré bien des heures à son église ainsi qu’à recueillir de
signatures pour des pétitions, et à titre de bénévole d’une école
locale, sans compter les heures innombrables à aider les autres,
à promouvoir des causes valables et à raffermir sa communauté.
La YWCA de Sudbury rend donc hommage à cette femme de
mérite remarquable.

Conference, an annual motivational
conference allowing disengaged
grade 9 and 10 girls to meet present
day women and role models and
explore a variety of potential careers.

Sharon possède une vaste expérience de l’enseignement, de la
politique et du droit. Elle est actuellement directrice générale de
la Commission de partenariats en main-d’œuvre de Sudbury et
Manitoulin (CPMSM). Elle est l’artisane de la conférence Femmes
de l’avenir, une activité de motivation annuelle permettant aux filles
démotivées de la 9e et de la 10e année de rencontrer des femmes
modernes et modèles, et d’explorer diverses possibilités de carrière.
En politique, Sharon a notamment préparé le terrain à la Loi
modifiant la Loi sur l’équité salariale (loi 102) qui précise et codifie
l’équité salariale pour les professions féminines. Au fil des ans, la
loi en question a eu un profond impact sur les femmes. En outre,
Sharon a joué un rôle important dans l’obtention de fonds pour la
construction de maisons à logements multiples, ici même à Sudbury.
Ancienne institutrice et jeannette, Sharon est maintenant
bénévole dans le cadre du Programme de développement en
leadership de Centraide de Sudbury et du district. Survivante du
cancer du sein, elle donne également de son temps à la Coalition
d’action du sein-Sudbury.
Sa force, son sens de l’humour, sa ténacité et son action

Sudbury Community Midwives “Committed to empowering
women and families during pregnancy and childbirth”
The Sudbury Community Midwives consisting of Buffy FultonBreathat, Debbie Younger, Meredith Crowder, Marie-Eve Lord,
Lynne Sullivan, Leslee Larsen, Nicole Conway, Meghann Leonard
and Joan Hutchinson are consummate professionals who provide
an important health care option for pregnant women and their
babies in our community.
Opening in November 1993, this practice was a pioneer in
the midwifery movement in Ontario, making Sudbury one of the
first communities in Ontario to offer midwifery services. Through
extensive lobbying, education campaigns and exemplary practice,
the Sudbury Community Midwives have worked hard to educate
the public, build respect and collaborative relationships within
the medical community and obtain hospital privileges to ensure a
seamless experience for pregnant women wherever they may give
birth. In addition to “catching” more than three hundred babies
a year, Sudbury Community Midwives make regular home visits
and monitor mothers and babies for six weeks after childbirth.
Sudbury Community Midwives also play a key role in education
of midwifery students through the Midwifery Education Program
at Laurentian University and the Northern Ontario School of
Medicine.

Inspiring Change

world-wide “YWCA” movement. We believe
that every person has the right to live in
dignity, free from exploitation. With special
emphasis on women, we work to empower
all individuals to reach their full potential in
body, mind and spirit.

YWCA Sudbury has a proud history.
In 1952 members of the medical
community and a number of concerned
citizens began to discuss the need for
an agency to provide services and
shelter
for
young women
and
soon
afterwards chose
to affiliate with
YWCA
Canada.
One of the first
activities was a Rooms
Registry which helped
277 girls and women find
suitable
accommodation
within its first two years.
From its first office
above Kresge’s on Elm St., to the
rooms and apartments at 122-4
Larch St. women and girls sought
out the support of the YWCA. The
rooms and apartments at 122-4 Larch
were home to students in teaching,
nursing and business courses, working
women, travelers, young women
needing guidance and women and
their children in emergency situations.
By 1973 the YWCA needed more space
and moved into the St. Andrew’s Place
complex where there was a shortterm residential area, kitchen, dining
and lounge facilities and access to a
gymnasium and meeting rooms.
During the 1970’s the YWCA
became increasingly known as a safe
refuge for women and their children
who were fleeing abusive situations.
As this program grew, the need for a
secure
and
independent
building
b e c a m e
evident. In 1983
YWCA
Sudbury
established Genevra
House at 224 Elm
St., named after the
first Executive Director,
Genevra Richard. In 2003
Genevra House moved to
its modern new facility on St.
Raphael St.
The YWCA Sudbury also
offers a Service Coordination
Program to both men and women
with developmental disabilities. This
centralized program assists families and
individuals who depend on the various
services available in the District of
Sudbury and Manitoulin.
In affiliation with the dynamic
tradition of YWCA Canada, the YWCA
Sudbury has been instrumental in
addressing current needs of the
community. We are proud of the
heritage of strong leadership by women
and the commitment to meeting these
needs and shaping a better future.
The blue triangle logo symbolizes the importance and interrelation of women’s spirit, mind and body. It also represents the
three stages of a woman’s life, and the three levels of YW action
– local, national and international.
The silhouette of a butterfly is a symbol of renewal and freedom,
representing the YWCA programs that offer programs and
services to women at critical points in their lives. These are
designated as Turning Point programs.

La YWCA est fière de son histoire. En
1952, les membres de la communauté
médicale ainsi que des citoyennes et
citoyens préoccupés ont commencé à
discuter de la nécessité de créer une
organisation pouvant offrir des services
et un refuge aux jeunes femmes. Peu de
temps après, cet organisme s’affiliait à la
YWCA du Canada. Parmi ses premières
activités durant ses deux premières années,
l’organisme a mis sur pied un « registre
de chambres » permettant à 277 filles et
femmes de trouver un logement adéquat.
Dans les bureaux de l’organisation, situés
à l’étage du bâtiment où se trouvait le
magasin Kresge’s, rue Elm, et dans les
chambres et les appartements du 1224, rue Larch, les femmes et les filles
cherchaient du soutien. Ses chambres et
appartements ont accueilli des étudiantes
en enseignement, en sciences infirmières
et en affaires, des femmes au travail, des
voyageuses, de jeunes femmes ayant
besoin de conseils, ainsi que des femmes
et enfants vivant des situations d’urgence.
En 1973, les locaux de l’organisme
étaient devenus trop petits, et c’est
pourquoi on les déménagea au complexe
St. Andrew’s Place, où l’on trouvait des
logements provisoires comprenant une
cuisine, une salle à manger et des aires
de détente, et où l’on avait accès à un
gymnase et à des salles de réunion. Dans
les années 1970, la YWCA est de plus en
plus devenu un refuge pour les femmes
et les enfants voulant échapper à des
situations de violence. En raison de la
croissance de l’organisme, il est devenu
évident qu’il fallait trouver un endroit
sécuritaire et autonome. En 1983, la
YWCA Sudbury a mis sur pied la maison
Genevra, au 224, rue Elm, nommée
