ZOULIKHA BOUABDELLAH Born in 1977 in Moscow, Zoulikha Bouabdellah grew up in Algiers until the age of 16 before moving to France in 1993 due to the civil war. From this plural identity, the artist draws the foundation of her work that is built around transgression, humor and subversion. In the form of installations, videos and photographs, her work questions authoritative representations, be they political, social, moral, religious and formal. Her work strives to articulate notions of feminism and sexuality at once as political intervention and as an emancipatory gesture, and the imperialist tensions at play in their aesthetic strategies. Her work was featured in Experiments in the Arab Avant-garde at the French Cinémathèque (Paris); Africa Remix at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, 2005), and Paradise Now! Essential Avant-Guarde French Cinema 1890-2008 at the Tate Modern (London, 2008). Recently, Bouabdellah’s work was namely presented at Wiels in Body Talk (Brussels, 2015), Centre Pompidou in its presentation of its modern collection Modernites Plurielles 1905 – 1970 (Paris, 2014) in The Divine Comedy at MMK (Museum für Moderne Kunst) (Frankfurt, 2014), Music Palace, the Power of Music seen by Visual Artists at Boghossian Foundation (Brussels, 2014), The Progress of Love at The Menil Foundation (Houston, 2012) She has also exhibited at the Venice Biennial (2007), Aichi Triennial (2010), Bamako Biennial (2003), the Mori Art Museum (Tokyo, 2006), the Brooklyn Museum (New York, 2007), Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation (Vienna, 2006), the Museum Kunst Palast (2004, Düsseldorf), the Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (New York, 2009), the Mathaf Arab Museum of Modern Art (Doha, 2013) and the Moderna Museet (Stockholm, 2012). She was one of the three winners of the inaugural Abraaj Capital Prize, Dubai, UAE in 2009 with her installation Walking on the Sky, Pisces and Villa Medicis Hors les Murs (AFAA – Cape Town, South Africa) in 2005.
