The total international visitors in April 2013 showed an increase of 44% over the corresponding
month of 2012 and the previous month of March 2013.
•
Figures in April recorded an increase of 10% in visitor arrivals by air, rising from 7,860 to 8,662
over the same month of 2012. Figures also recorded an increase of 24% over the previous
month, increasing from 6,977 in March 2013. This increase was due to the high number of visitors
who arrived into the country for holiday, and also noting the sporting event of U17 Oceania
Football Championship in Santo therefore the increase in visitors to Luganville.
•
Cruise ship figures also recorded an increase of 61% over the corresponding month of 2012. This
increase was attributed by the increase in number of cruise ship visits over the same month of
2012 rising from 9 to 14 vessels. Nevertheless day visitors continue to make up the highest
proportion of visitors, accounting for 74% of international visitors.

March figures showed that 79% of visitor arrived for holiday, 11% arrived for business, meetings
and conferences, 6% arrived to visit friends and families and 3% for other purposes, education
and sports. Vanuatu hosted the Oceania football championship in April, therefore the rise in
visitors for sports.

Australia continues to be the number one source of visitor arrivals to Vanuatu, accounting for 57%
of visitors, followed by New Caledonia at 13%, New Zealand at 11%, Europe and other Pacific
countries at 6% each, other countries and North America at 3% each and Japan at 1% (Figure 2).
•
Tourism in Vanuatu is seasonal, and it is difficult to analyse changes in international arrivals and
country of residence by looking at the monthly number of arrivals. Figure 3 below, shows the total
number of visitor arrivals and arrivals from Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia and all other
countries combined to show trends in arrivals, with the number of visitors based on an index value
of 100 in January 2005. This index allows analysis over time of the real increases and decreases in
international air arrivals.

Figure 3 shows overall trend for increasing visitor arrivals in April 2013 compared with April 2012
with a 10% increase in index value as visitors increase approaching the high season in July to
August.

The index values for the major tourism markets of New Zealand and New Caledonia showed higher
numbers of visitors in April 2013 increasing at 19% and 14% respectively, with a slight decline in the
Australian market by 2% when compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY FOR VISITORS ARRIVING BY AIR
•
April figures recorded that the average intended length of stay for visitors remained unchanged at
10 days over the same month of 2012. Figures also remained unchanged at 10 days when
compared to the previous month of March 2013.
AVERAGE AGE OF VISITORS ARRIVING BY AIR
•
In April 2013, figures showed a decline in visitors’ average age, dropping by 4.2 years from 40.5
years to 36.2 years in April 2013. April figures also showed a decline in visitors’ age when
compared to the previous month, dropping by 3 years from 39.2 years to 36.2 years.
CONCEPTS AND DEFINITIONS
Visitors are non-resident persons spending at least one night in Vanuatu.
Residents are persons who declare themselves to be residents or an intending resident on
immigration arrival cards.
