Welcome TY MURRAY - 7 TIMES WORLD CHAMPION ALL AROUND COWBOY Our horses have carried more cowboy and cowgirls to the pay windows of America’s Rodeos than any other present day breeding program. Two world champion PRCA calf ropers were riding geldings we bred and raised the years they won: D.R. Daniels 1989, Fred Whitfield 1991. The entire production of our horse operation is selling with the exception of 4 broodmare bands and 4 herd sires. Within each band, the mares are ¾ sisters. Nothing else is being held back. We will be more than happy to be of any assistance. Thank you for coming. If a tie results, the auctioneer will open the bidding up between those two bidders only. In case of a dispute, the auctioneer shall have sole authority to settle the bid. Each bidder must have a buyer’s number to bid. The auctioneer may decline any bids, and his decision shall be final. Payment: All horses are to be paid for the day of the sale. No horse shall leave the grounds without a bill of sale. Cash, cashiers check, or bank checks will be accepted. Positive I.D. is required to receive a buyer’s number. Horses will sell in Catalog Order: Buyers who pay for their purchase by personal check will have their papers held 21 days from date of deposit in order to allow checks to properly clear their banks. At that time, registration papers will be mailed to AQHA for transfer. Risk The buyer becomes responsible for his or her purchase as soon as the horse leaves the auction ring. All horses should be removed from the site same day of the sale, September 17th, unless other arrangements have been made with Fisher Ranch. Nationwide transportation is available. Health: All horses will have a negative coggins test. Announcements: Any announcements made the day of sale shall take precedence over printed information within this sale catalog. We will call to your attention, the day of the sale, any printing errors detected, or changes that may have occurred after the printing of this catalog. Liability: All buyers an spectators attend the sale at their own risk. Fisher Ranch will not be liable for accidents to persons or property. The Brown Bert Geldings and mares went on to carry the top professional cowboy of the Southwest to the pay windows of rodeoing. These are the bloodlines we started with 65 years ago. We had five own daughters of BERT. Bud Warren at Perry, Oklahoma, who owned LEO, bred those mares for $5000 a piece to LEO. The next year, H.H. Darks who owned LEO SAN at Wetumka, Oklahoma, bred the same mares to LEO SAN for $5000 each and continued to do that until we bought BROWN BERT, who was our first herd sire here at the Ranch. This outside breeding program to LEO and LEO SAN really improved the quality in our colts at that time. After cross breeding OKLAHOMA STAR and BERT blood the next 20 years, we decided to outcross with LEO blood as we had done back in the 40’s and 50’s and the following FILLIES and STUDS are our 2011 product of that endeavor. Inside you’ll find tomorrow’s cowhorses carrying yesterday’s blood. Fisher doesn’t have to get out of the way of the stampeded to get foundation blood because he’s already there. And the reason he’s there is because he never left. Lean or flush, the Eufaula, OK, breeder has stayed the course, dancing with the ones who brought him – Bert, Oklahoma Star and Leo. More than 50 years ago Fisher got his start by breeding own daughters of Bert to Leo and today you can trace that lineage right up to this spring’s foal crop. To cross on those early cherished Bertbred mares, Fisher bought Guthrie Double Star, a double-bred Oklahoma Star and double-bred Bert stud who proved to be a cowhorse producer and the right match for the Bert Mares. “There were a lot of cowboys in the country who had already proven that BertOklahoma Star cross before I used it,” Fisher says. “It was really a good match. The Bert horses are great minded, solid, they don’t blow up. Oklahoma Star brought some gas to the cross and the result is solid, smart and athletic cow-type horses. Fisher horses became coveted cowboy mounts, both in the arena and in the pasture. In fact, two PRCA world champion calf ropers – D.R. Daniels and Fred Whitfield – rode geldings of Guthrie Double Star bred and raised by Fisher. A lifelong student of genetics, Fisher is a believer in families and that’s exactly what he has on his ranch west of Eufaula. His 70 or so mares are divided by blood into four bands. Mares within each group are ¾ sisters or more. Two bands are linebred Oklahoma Star mares, one in linebred to Bert and one is linebred to Leo. Mares in one of the Oklahoma Star bands are linebred again to an Oklahoma Star-bred stallion and the Bert mares are linebred again to a Bert-bred stallion. The Leo mares and the other Oklahoma Star mares are bred to an outcross stallion. “We line breed to produce our own breeding stock” Fisher explains. “The reason we outcross is to take advantage of hybrid vigor and produce outstanding performance horses. “The breeding program is designed to cut down on genetic variation. We try to transmit the qualities and characteristics we want them to transmit. The result is horses that are more consistent – horses that can really do the things they’re supposed to be able to do.” (Continued on Next Page) While much of the rest of the Quarter Horse world drifted away from the qualities of the of the horses the breed was built on, Fisher stuck by the Bert and Oklahoma Star blood and today his breeding has the greatest concentration of those bloodlines to be found anywhere in the country. After a period when many breeders were off trying to breed a race horse but today there’s a growing movement to get back to the breed’s foundation. Last fall, the Fisher Ranch held its first production sale and averaged $1,891 a head on a predominant offering of weanlings. Horses went home to about 20 states and more than 1,000 people attended the sale. “It felt good,” Fisher admits. “You spend your life doing something, it’s nice to see that there are people who appreciate your efforts. Fisher believes the foundation horse trend is a movement back to the middle: “Breeders began concentrating on other characteristics, especially for racing. That led us away from the using horses that made a lot of us Quarter Horse breeders in the first place. “Well now there are a lot of folks who recognize that to get that kind of horse you’ve got to get back to that kind of genetics, back to horses that give you the bone, the soundness, the disposition and the athletic ability you need.” For a lot of horsemen, it might indeed be a trend that goes back but not for Fisher. For Roy Fisher, it’s always been moving forward. “Thanks for coming.” FISHER RANCH EUFAULA, OKLAHOMA The Fisher Ranch started in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, on land settled by Jonas Fisher, M.D., in the 1889 Land Rush. His son, Roy Fisher Sr., expanded the ranch’s land and commercial cattle operation. In the late 1940s, Roy Fisher Jr. began putting together a band of American Quarter Horse mares. After graduating from Oklahoma State University in 1952 and spending two years in the U.S. Army, Roy Jr. moved the ranch to McIntosh County, Oklahoma, near Eufaula. Today, the ranch consists of 25,000 acres, on which the Fisher family runs 1,500 head of commercial cows, yearlings and a band of American Quarter Horses that trace to Bert and Oklahoma Star. The Fishers take pride in raising good using horses, especially for the rodeo arena. In fact, Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association world champions, D. R. Daniel in 1989 and Fred Whitfield in 1991, rode Fisher-bred horses. The Fishers took the popular Bert and Oklahoma Star lines through stallions like Brown Bert and Guthrie Double Star. They have linebred the two lines to produce their own breeding stock, and then outcrossed to Leo stallions to produce outstanding performance horses. Roy Jr., 80, a community and state leader, runs the ranch with help of his wife, sons and daughters. “Developing this band of horses over the past 60 years has been our greatest achievement,” Roy Jr. said. “The athletic ability, disposition and sound bone structure are stamped in these horses. Their achievements in the rodeo world, horse show arenas and success over the past 10 years of our production sales make me very grateful and proud.”
