As President of the New Brunswick
Police Association, I am very proud to
introduce the NB Police Association’s
25th Annual Crime Prevention Guide.This
publication is made possible by the
contributions and support of many
individuals, businesses and organizations
throughout the province, and we are very
grateful for their donations.
This year’s guide focuses on the very
serious topic of Children’s Internet Safety.
The Internet is one of the greatest
technologies, but it can also be a very
dangerous place, and many children don’t
understand the dangers. It can harm
children
mentally
(by
seeing
pornographic photos) and physically (by
chatting with someone who could find
them and do them harm). Parents should
be aware of what their children are doing
on the computer. Making rules for the
Internet is also a good way of protecting
your children.
Remind your children to never give out
any type of personal information!
On behalf of the New Brunswick Police
Association, I encourage you to read
through this year’s book and educate
yourself on this ongoing concern, and to
help the community grow in the
prevention of abuse and protect the
children we love. If you have concerns
about any child’s safety on the internet,
please do not hesitate to contact the
police.

Le guide de cette année met l'accent sur
le sujet très grave de la sécurité des
enfants vis-à-vis l’Internet. L'Internet est
l'une des plus grandes technologies, mais
il peut aussi être un endroit très
dangereux et beaucoup d'enfants ne
comprennent pas les dangers. Il peut
nuire aux enfants mentalement (en
voyant des photos pornographiques) et
physiquement (en discutant avec
quelqu'un qui pourrait les trouver et leur
faire du mal). Les parents doivent être
conscients de ce que leurs enfants font
sur l'ordinateur. L'élaboration de règles
pour l'Internet est aussi un bon moyen de
protéger vos enfants.
Rappelez à vos enfants de ne donner
aucun type d'information personnelle!

vous renseigner sur cette préoccupation
constante, et d'aider la communauté à

Each year, the New Brunswick Police
Association publishes these Community
Awareness Guides as a result of financial
contributions from residents of the
province and business representatives.
With their generous support for our
annual campaign, our New Brunswick
Police Association is able to give back to
their communities through donations to
various local charities and youth-oriented
programs, in an effort to keep our
younger generation from experiencing
the negative effects of many of the topics
discussed in these annual guides.
This 25th Annual NBPA Crime Prevention
Guide focuses on the topic of
Children’s Internet Safety. Our goal
is to educate children, youth and adults
on the potential hazards and risks related
to the use of the Internet, and to provide
information, tools and strategies for
children so they can better protect
themselves online.

The Canadian Centre for Child Protection is a
charitable organization dedicated to the personal
safety of all children. Their goal is to reduce child
victimization by providing national programs and
services to the Canadian public. The Canadian
Centre for Child Protection operates Cybertip.ca,
Canada's tipline for reporting the online sexual
exploitation of children. The tipline has been in
operation since September 26, 2002 and was
adopted under the Government of Canada’s
National Strategy for the Protection of Children from
Sexual Exploitation on the Internet in May 2004.
Le Centre canadien de protection de l’enfance
est un organisme caritatif voué à la sécurité
personnelle des enfants. Notre but est de réduire la
violence faite aux enfants par l'entremise de
programmes et de services nationaux destinés à la
population canadienne. Le Centre canadien de
protection de l’enfance gère Cyberaide.ca, la
centrale canadienne de signalement des cas
d’exploitation sexuelle d’enfants sur Internet. En
service depuis le 26 septembre 2002, Cyberaide.ca
a été intégrée en mai 2004 à la Stratégie nationale
du gouvernement du Canada pour la protection des
enfants contre l’exploitation sexuelle sur Internet.
On average, Cybertip.ca receives over 1,000
reports and 75,000 page views per month. All
reports that pertain to incidents that appear to be in
contravention of the Criminal Code (Canada) are
sent to law enforcement for possible investigation.
Any information regarding a child potentially in need
of protection is forwarded to the appropriate child
welfare agency.
Cyberaide.ca reçoit 1 000 signalements et cumule
75 000 pages vues en moyenne par mois. Tout
signalement concernant un incident jugé contraire
au Code criminel du Canada est renvoyé à la police
en vue d’une enquête éventuelle. Toute information
concernant un enfant qui pourrait avoir besoin de

The New Brunswick Police Association hosted their
Annual Benefit Hockey Game, featuring the Maritime
All-Stars, in Moncton on December 20, 2012.
The game was a tremendous success once again
this year, with over $12,500 in proceeds raised for
the community activities of the NB Police
Association, including a generous game-night
donation of $5,000 to Food Depot Alimentaire,
Southeastern New Brunswick’s Food Distribution.

désormais de notre vie à bien des égards,
il devient très important d’éduquer et de
bien guider nos jeunes aux dangers
possibles qui s’y rattachent. Je vous

As parents, we ask ourselves how do we keep
our children safe online, why does Internet
safety matter or what tools, strategies and safe
practices can we instill in our children to ensure
that they can protect themselves from online
predators?
En tant que parents, nous nous demandons
comment garder nos enfants en sécurité en
ligne, pourquoi la sécurité Internet est
importante, ou quels outils, stratégies et
pratiques sécuritaires nous pouvons inculquer à
nos enfants pour s'assurer qu'ils peuvent se

Here are a few basic guidelines and tips for
parents when educating your children about the
importance of Internet safety.
Help your kids understand that they should:
• Never share their name, school, age, phone
number, or address;
• Never send pictures to strangers;
• Keep passwords private (except to parents);
• Never open email from strangers – it may
contain viruses that can harm a computer;
• Immediately tell an adult if something mean
or creepy happens;
• Be a good cyber citizen;
• Keep the computer central.
Establish expectations and limits. Most
importantly, be involved and have fun with
your children while online.
Keeping these basic Internet safety tips in mind
and following best practices within your home
will assist you in educating your children and
provide them with a better sense of security and
understanding as they venture through the ever
changing and very dangerous realm of World
Wide Web.

Four Fredericton Police officers received Commanding
Officer Commendations for the daring cold water
rescue of a senior whose car plunged into the icy Saint
John River in January 2012. Shirley Foster, 73, called
911 and told the operator that her car had skidded off
the highway, down an embankment, onto the ice of
the Saint John River in Maugerville, and she was

was born at RCMP Training Depot in Regina, SK and started her career with the
Fredericton Police Force in November 2009. Cst. Scott Dixon is Astra’s PSD

jouent un grand rôle dans la vie de nos
enfants. Nous avons tous entendu comment
l'Internet est un outil formidable, mais s'il est
mal utilisé, il peut y avoir de grandes
répercussions.
Les parents doivent s'assurer que leurs
enfants suivent les règles de sécurité. Il existe
de nombreux sites Web inappropriés que les
enfants peuvent facilement accéder. Un
moyen de prévention est de vérifier et de
s'assurer que les enfants visitent des sites
Web approuvés par les parents. Les enfants
sont naturellement curieux. Qu'il s'agisse
d'un site porno, un site de chat vidéo ou un
jeu violent, les parents doivent être
conscients de ce que leurs enfants font et
comment ils se comportent, de sorte qu'ils
puissent inculquer leurs valeurs personnelles
et enseigner un comportement approprié et
sécuritaire en ligne. Le Web est un endroit
vraiment merveilleux, et bien qu'il y existe
« des personnes méchantes », les parents
peuvent prendre des mesures pour s'assurer
que leurs enfants sont en sécurité.
Nous sommes tous conscient que nos jeunes
font partie de la nouvelle génération où les

opportunity to thank the citizens of the
Greater Regions of Grand Falls, Drummond
and Saint André for their support of the
NBPA‘s 25th Annual Community Guide.
This year’s edition touches on Children’s
Internet Safety. Our members receive
complaints of cyber bullying, identity theft,
internet fraud, and other misuses of social
networking sites that can affect children of all
ages, especially for middle and high school
students.
Our members have to stay up-to-date with
Internet Technology. Social Media plays a big
part in our children’s lives. We all hear how
the Internet is a great tool, but when misused,
it can have great repercussions.
Parents need to make sure their kids are
following safety rules. There are many
inappropriate websites that kids can easily
access. Checking to make sure kids are
visiting parent-approved websites is another
means of prevention. Kids are naturally
curious. Whether it’s a porn site, a video chat
site, or a violent game, parents need to be
aware of what their kids are doing and how
they are behaving so that they can instill their
own personal values and teach safe,
appropriate online behavior. The Web is a
truly wonderful place, and while there are
"bad guys" out there, parents can take steps
to ensure their children are safe.
We are all aware that our youth are part of
the new generation where the technologies
of the Internet and social media play an
important role in their daily lives.
Parents must ensure that safety rules are
followed to avoid abuse.
This year’s Guide will surely open people’s
eyes.

Safety on the Internet is not the same as safety on a
playground but it can be just as important or even more
so; it can’t always be as obvious. Who is responsible
for Internet Safety? We all are! As adults, we must
learn Internet Safety and ensure that everyone in our
families is protected and also learn internet safety.
Millions of us use and enjoy the Internet every day,
whether it be through learning, shopping, music,
games, and yes, even meeting people. With so many
legitimate people using the Internet each day and
utilizing its benefits and conveniences, so too are the
criminals, who are more commonly referred to as
cybercriminals.
Cybercriminals try to take advantage of those using the
Internet every day; we always must be on guard. Use
trusted security software from a known company to
defend your family against hackers, identity thieves,
email con artists, and predators.
You need an Internet Safety plan for your family. As
soon as a family member becomes active online, we
must take the time to educate them. Even if you do not
have a computer at home, PCs are available almost
everywhere; at schools, libraries, friends’ homes, and
even in church basements. It’s important for everyone
to know the basics about protecting themselves in
cyberspace.
The first rule of smart surfing is to remain as
anonymous as possible. That means keeping all private
information private. Here are some examples of private
information that you should never give out on the
Internet:
• full name and age
• home address
• phone number
• Social Insurance Number
• passwords
• names of family members
• credit card numbers
Most credible people and companies will never ask for
this type of information online. So if someone does, it's
a red flag that they may be up to no good. For more
information on this subject and many more, refer to the
Internet; it’s just a Google search away. One Canadian
site which has really good information is
www.healthycanadians.gc.ca, Dangers on the Internet.

sécurité sur un terrain de jeu, mais elle peut être tout
aussi importante, voire plus ; il n'est pas toujours aussi
évident. Qui est responsable de la sécurité sur Internet?
Nous le sommes tous! En tant qu'adultes, nous devons
apprendre la sécurité sur Internet et s'assurer que
chacun dans nos familles est protégé et qu’ils
apprennent eux aussi la sécurité sur Internet.
Des millions d'entre nous utilisent et profitent de
l'Internet tous les jours, que ce soit pour
l'apprentissage, le shopping, la musique, les jeux, et
oui, même rencontrer les autres. Beaucoup de
personnes légitimes utilisent l'Internet chaque jour et
profitent de ses avantages et commodités, tout comme
le font les criminels, communément appelé
cybercriminels.
Les cybercriminels tentent de profiter de ceux qui
utilisent l'internet tous les jours, alors nous devons
toujours être sur notre garde. Utilisez un logiciel de
sécurité de confiance d'une société connue pour
défendre votre famille contre les pirates, les voleurs
d'identité, les escrocs e-mail, et les prédateurs.
Vous avez besoin d'un plan de sécurité Internet pour
votre famille, et dès qu'un membre de la famille
devient actif en ligne, nous devons prendre le temps de
les éduquer. Même si vous ne possédez pas
d'ordinateur à la maison, les ordinateurs sont
disponibles presque partout; dans les écoles, les
bibliothèques, les maisons des amis, et même dans les
sous-sols d'église. Il est important pour chacun de
connaître les rudiments de se protéger dans le
cyberespace.
La première règle quand on fait du surfing sur l’Internet
est de rester le plus anonyme possible. Cela signifie

peuvent être mal intentionnés. Pour plus
d'informations sur ce sujet et bien d'autres encore, se
référer à l'Internet – c'est aussi simple qu’une
recherche Google. Un site canadien qui détient des
bonnes informations est www.healthycanadians.gc.ca,
Dangers sur Internet.

DRUG AWARENESS PROGRAMS GROWING
Youth Police-led initiative encourages healthy choices by building self-esteem

The growing program has made several
improvements over the past few months, he said.
SAINT JOHN - When Const. Cory Jamieson speaks to
elementary school students across the city, he tries to
help them understand how making the right choices
will help them reach their biggest dreams.
One of the most noticeable changes is the addition of
two vehicles donated from Loch Lomond Mitsubishi
and King Mazda. The vehicles - complete with decals
- mean that the DARE program will no longer have to
pay for the use of police cruisers.
"I tell them how the world can be a negative place, but
don't let anyone tell you that you can't achieve your
dreams," said Jamieson, the co-ordinator for Fundy
DARE Inc., a non-profit organization that offers drug
and alcohol resistance education in Saint John and
the Kennebecasis Valley.
He tells them that if they choose to use drugs, alcohol
or even tobacco, it could impede their education,
involvement in sports and any other activities. They
may become more isolated and veer off track from
pursuing post-secondary education and finding a
good job.
But one of the first things those children need,
Jamieson says, is a little encouragement from a good
role model.
From the very first day of the 10-week, once-a-week
Jamieson has helped double the number of corporate
sponsors to fund the program, which is also funded by
individuals, the school district and court fines.
"It's really a community program," he said. Police

purchase of a lion mascot, involvement in the Saint
John Sea Dogs' recent teddy bear toss and increased
advertising with new signs on transit buses and
shelters.
For National Police Week in May, Jamieson is
organizing a special presentation for high schools
from Sussex to St. Stephen.
"I felt we needed to do more for that age group," he
said.
And looking ahead to 2020, Jamieson is working on a
bid to host an international DARE conference in Saint
John - an event that would draw police officers from
47 countries, he said.
"It's huge,"he said."There's nothing our wonderful city
couldn't offer." To Jamieson, growing the program and
awareness is important.

program for Grade 5 and 7 students, Jamieson tells
the children that they're cared about, and he's proud
of them.
"Some of these kids need to hear words like that,"he
said.
Jamieson is one of several DARE officers from both
the Saint John Police Force and Rothesay Regional
Police Force who teach elementary school children.
DARE stands for Drug Abuse Resistance Education.
"All of it sends a strong message that our youth
matter," he said."It's all about building relationships
with young people." It comes down to giving youth the
facts about drugs, alcohol, tobacco, violence and how
making choices impacts your life. Officers debunk
myths about the "coolness"of engaging in such
activities.
"What's cool now is healthy choices,"he said.
He tells students that classes such as math and
science are important to building their lives and career
options. But there are no other classes like the DARE
program.
"The stuff you learn in DARE could very well keep you,
or someone you know, alive,"he said.

The 65th Old Home Week Festival in
Woodstock was held from July 27th to August
4th, 2012. Cst. Shaun Kimball acted as a
pageant escort for the Miss New Brunswick
contestants.

Murray's Irving which raised $2,700 for the
Law Enforcement Torch Run and NB Special
Olympics. Cst. Carr was pumping gas with
Chris and Calvin on this sunny day in August
2012.

THE FACTS
Canadian Youth and Internet Use
Canadian children and youth are major users of the
Internet. In fact, Canadian households are a world leader
in Internet usage. Youth are using the Internet for social
interaction, entertainment, education, information and
other activities.
• 99% of Canadian youth report they have used the
Internet at some point. Almost 8 in 10 say they have
Internet access at home.
• Almost half say they use the Internet from home at
least an hour every day.
Kids say their parents know nothing about the sites
they visit; parents say they do
• When asked how much their parents know about
web sites they visit almost 4 in 10 young people say
their parents know very little or nothing.
• When parents were asked about how much they
knew about the sites their children visit, 71% said
they knew a great deal or a fair bit.
• More than one third of young people say they erase
the history that shows the web sites they’ve visited.
• 8 in 10 young people say their parents don’t talk to
them at all or very little about what they do online.
• While 78% of parents say they talk to their kids about
their online habits a great deal or fair bit.
• 50% of young people think their parents know less
about the Internet than they do.
Kids are on their own when using the Internet
• A large percentage of young people are alone when
they go online. 50% say they are alone most of the
time. 33% say they are alone some of the time.
• 15% of young people say they have met in person at
least one friend they’ve made online.
Chat Rooms
• 30% of 9-10 year olds go into chat rooms. For 11-12
years, the rate is 58%; 13-14 year olds is at 70%; 1517 years is 72%.
• Of those who visit chat rooms, 26% of 9-10 year olds
visit adult chat rooms; 37% for 11-12 years; and 66%
for 15-17 year olds.
• The majority of youth who visit private and adult-only
chat rooms are at home but unsupervised (85%) and
they have no household rule relating to this practice
(82%).
Exposure to Pornography/Sexual solicitation
• More than half of young Internet users have received
pornographic junk mail. Most did not tell their parents
(78%).
• Almost one-half of youth in secondary school say
someone has made unwanted sexual comments to
them on the Internet.
• 21% of young Internet users indicated they would
give out both their name and address online in order
to win a prize.
• About one-quarter of youth have their own personal
web site. 57% of these provide their email address;
26% provide their full name and 22% provide a
photograph of themselves.
• Of all young Internet users, 60% have household
rules about not giving out personal information about
themselves or their family.
• Most youth have their own email accounts, but many
parents are unaware they do.

Les enfants et les jeunes Canadiens sont de grands
utilisateurs de l'Internet. En fait, les ménages canadiens
sont un leader mondial dans l’usage Internet. Les jeunes
utilisent l'Internet pour l'interaction sociale, le
divertissement, l'éducation, l'information et d'autres
activités.
• 99 % des jeunes Canadiens rapportent qu'ils ont
utilisé l’Internet à un moment donné. Près de 8
personnes sur 10 disent avoir accès à l’Internet à la
maison.
• Près de la moitié disent utiliser l’Internet à la maison
au moins une heure chaque jour.
Les enfants disent que leurs parents ne savent rien
sur les sites qu'ils visitent, les parents disent qu'ils
savent...
• Lorsqu'on leur a demandé combien leurs parents
connaissent sur les sites Web qu'ils visitent, près de
4 sur 10 jeunes disent que leurs parents connaissent
très peu ou rien.
• Lorsque les parents ont été interrogés sur ce qu'ils
savaient sur les sites que leurs enfants visitent, 71 %
ont dit qu'ils en connaissaient beaucoup ou assez
bien.
• Plus d'un tiers des jeunes disent effacer l'histoire
montrant les sites Web qu'ils ont visités.
• 8 sur 10 jeunes disent que leurs parents ne leur

WHAT IS CYBERBULLYING?

CYBERBULLYING IS THE USE OF ANY KIND OF TECHNOLOGY TO INTIMIDATE, HURT, OR HUMILIATE OTHERS.

It’s so common that you or someone you know have
probably already been involved in it—whether as target,
bystander, or as the person cyberbullying others.
Here are some examples of cyberbullying:
• Sending cruel or threatening emails, texts, or instant
messages to someone
• Posting photos that you know will embarrass
someone
• Creating a website to make fun of someone
• Posting insults on someone’s timeline on Facebook
• Making up fake accounts on social networking sites
(like Facebook, Twitter, or Tumblr) to ridicule others
• Rating people in online polls
• Spreading secrets or rumours about people online
• Harassing other players in online video games
(flaming)
So?
All forms of bullying are hurtful, but there are some
things about cyberbullying that can make it especially
devastating. For example:
• It’s easier to be cruel when you can’t see or be seen
by your target. When someone doesn’t witness the
hurt they are causing, it’s easier to imagine that it’s
just a joke’ or that what they’re doing is ‘no big deal.’
• Cyberbullying has a much larger audience than
face-to-face bullying. If someone posts something
that your entire friend-circle can see, it’s going to hurt
more than if they’d said the same thing to your face.
• The perpetrator is anonymous in some types of
cyberbullying, which can make the abuse very
difficult to stop.
• Because teens are always wired, cyberbullying can
follow them everywhere—even into ‘safe’ places like
their homes.

Et puis?
Toutes les formes d’intimidation sont blessantes,
mais il y a certaines choses à propos de la
cyberintimidation qui font en sorte que ça peut être
encore plus dévastateur. Par exemple :
• C’est plus facile d’être cruel quand tu ne peux pas
voir ou être vu par ta victime. Quand quelqu’un n’est
pas témoin de la douleur qu’il cause, c’est plus facile
d’imaginer que ‘’c’est seulement une blague’’ ou que
ce que tu fais n’est pas grave.
• La cyberintimidation a un plus grand public que
l’intimidation en face à face. Si quelqu’un affiche
quelque chose que tout ton cercle d’amis peut voir,
cela sera plus blessant que s’il t’avait dit la même
chose en personne.
• La personne qui commet la cyberintimidation est
anonyme dans certains types de cyberintimidation,
ce qui peut rendre l’abus très difficile à arrêter.
• Puisque les jeunes sont souvent branchés, la
cyberintimidation peut les suivre partout - même
dans les places "sécuritaires" comme leur maison.

Cyberbullying hurts.
How do I tell?
It can leave you feeling isolated, humiliated, confused, and
scared. It can follow you into your home, making it feel like you
can’t escape it. But don’t lose hope. There are things you can
do that will make a difference, even if it takes some time for the
situation to resolve completely. You have the strength to get
through this. We can help.
The best way to get through the awful feelings that
cyberbullying can cause is to talk to someone about what you
are going through. Talking is also the first step in getting the
help you need to solve this problem. Here are some tips to
help you figure out what kind of support you need and how to
ask for it.
What’s different about cyberbullying?
•
It can be harder to avoid cyberbullying than other types
of bullying because it occurs through technology.
Cyberbullying can occur at any time and can spread
quickly.
•
Cyberbullying has a much larger reach than face-to-face
bullying. It uses technology, which extends beyond the
school, playground and other contexts, and can follow
the person into their home.
•
Photos and videos can be used in cyberbullying, which
can be humiliating.
•
Some forms of cyberbullying involve impersonation,
which can harm your reputation.
•
When the person doing the bullying is anonymous it can
be much harder to put a stop to it.
•
Think about how you are feeling right now, and what
would be most helpful. Do you need emotional support?
Someone to help you figure out what to do next?
Someone to talk to school administration or the police
with you? Once you know what would be most helpful
right now, it’ll be easier to pick who to talk to first.
•
Tell the person you talk to what it is you need from them.
If you really just need someone to listen, tell them that. If
you are not ready to report the cyberbullying yet, you
can tell them that, too.
•
If you are ready to report the abuse and need help
doing so, be very clear that it’s what you want. Ask the
person what they think the first step should be. If they
don’t seem to know much about cyberbullying, show
them this page and ask them to do some research.
Learning about your school’s anti-bullying policies is a
good place to start.
•
If the first person you talk to isn’t helpful, tell someone
else. Don’t give up! It sometimes takes a few tries before
you find someone who knows how to help.
•
Contact the police if you are being physically threatened
or feel that your safety is in danger.
What can I do?
Protect yourself on Facebook
1• It might be tempting to respond to the text, post, or
email but it’s better not to. Take a breath and count to
ten.
2• If it’s a text or email, don’t delete it. If it’s a post on
Facebook or another social networking site, take a
screen shot. Having a record can help you prove what
happened.
3•
Block the sender from your inbox. Move the message to
your Junk folder. If you don’t know how to block a sender
from your phone, contact the service provider (your cell
phone company).
4• It’s important to tell someone you trust about what’s
happening, especially if it continues. If you are being
threatened, you should contact the police.
Staying safe
•
Keep your passwords private, even from your friends.
•
Learn about privacy settings and reporting features on
any social networking sites you use.
•
Be careful about which photos you share online.
Remember, no one deserves to be cyberbullied, and no
one should have to go through it alone. If you’re really upset
and don’t know what to do, you can always call a counsellor at
Kids Help Phone: 1-800-668-6868.

ES-TU UNE VICTIME?
La cyberintimidation blesse.
Comment est-ce que j’en parle?
Cela peut t’amener à te sentir isolé, humilié, confus et apeuré.
Cela peut te suivre à la maison, te faisant sentir que tu ne
peux y échapper. Ne perds pas espoir. Il y a des choses que
tu peux faire qui feront la différence, même si ça prend un
certain temps avant que la situation ne se règle
complètement. Tu as la force pour passer au travers de ça.
Nous pouvons t’aider.
La meilleure manière de passer au travers des sentiments
horribles que peut causer la cyberintimidation est de parler à
quelqu’un de ce que tu vis. En parler est aussi la première
étape afin d’obtenir de l’aide pour résoudre le problème. Voici
certains conseils pour que tu saches quel genre de support tu
as besoin et comment le demander.
•
Pense à comment tu te sens présentement et à ce qui
serait le plus aidant. As-tu besoin de support
émotionnel? Quelqu’un qui pourrait t’aider à savoir ce
que tu pourrais faire ensuite? Quelqu’un qui pourrait
venir avec toi parler à l’administration de l’école ou à la
police? Une fois que tu sauras ce qui est le plus aidant
présentement, ce sera plus facile pour toi de choisir la
personne à qui en parler en premier.
•
Dis à la personne quelle aide tu attends de sa part. Si tu
as seulement besoin de quelqu’un pour t’écouter, dis-lui.
Si tu n’es pas encore prêt à dénoncer la
cyberintimidation, tu peux lui dire aussi.
•
Si tu es prêt à dénoncer l’abus et que tu as besoin
d’aide pour le faire, sois vraiment sûr que c’est ce que
tu veux. Demande à la personne ce qu’elle pense qui
pourrait être la première étape. Si elle ne semble pas en
savoir beaucoup sur la cyberintimidation, montre-lui
cette page et demande-lui de faire quelques recherches.
En apprendre plus sur la politique de ton école en ce
qui concerne l’intimidation est un bon point de départ.
•
Si la première personne à qui tu en parles n’est pas
aidante, parles-en à quelqu’un d’autre. Ne laisse pas
tomber! Parfois, cela peut prendre quelques essais
avant de trouver quelqu’un qui sait comment t’aider.

AND “NETIQUETTE”
Kids interact online with friends, family and
sometimes strangers. While most of these
interactions are positive, sometimes the internet can
lead to negative interactions with others: sexual
exploitation and cyberbullying.
Children and online exploitation
compliments or gifts. They are sometimes patient
and willing to work at gaining your kids trust for
weeks or even months. Others may use threats or
claim that they are in an emergency to convince your
children to cooperate. Some are teenagers, and
others may pose as teenagers online and develop a
"friendship" with your child with the goal of meeting
them for sexual purposes. Some will slowly and
gradually introduce sexual content into
conversations, while others work faster, introducing
sexual content very quickly.
While children are online they could come into
contact with people who want to exploit them.
Certain people go online in an attempt to manipulate
or abuse young people. The exploiters can even be
teenagers or young adults; they are not always the
stereotypical older man.
How to stay safe
When your children are online, remind them:

Most of online activities are not harmful when you
take the right precautions, but the following could
bring your children into contact with people who want
to exploit them:
• Online chatting
• Photo sharing

• Social networking websites
The signs
Your child may begin to show signs that they are
having problems online, like withdrawal, spending
extended periods of time on the computer, or
suddenly staying away from the computer.
• Never to give out or post any personal
information, like their address, phone number,
password or photograph. It is surprisingly easy
for strangers, or other young people your
children have met online, to track down your
children even with the smallest amount of
information.
• To use impersonal nicknames that do not give
away any identifying information in chat
programs and other sites.
• To think about their online reputation -- what they
say and do online can reveal a lot about them
and can have an impact on how others view
them. Acting before they think might give others
the wrong impression or attract unwanted
attention.
• If your child is talking to people he/she doesn't
know offline (for example, someone she only
knows through an online game), use a voicemask so others don't know her age or gender.
• Not to believe everything they're told. They have
no way of knowing who is telling the truth on the
Internet.

• If something sounds too good to be true, it
probably is.
• To ask you for permission before they make an
arrangement to meet in person someone they
have met online. Make sure they meet in a public
place and are not alone.
• If they share photos or videos of themselves, the
images can never be taken back. Once it's out
there, it's there for the whole world -- including
you, the parents, and future employers -- to see.
• Unplug their webcam when they aren't using it,
and avoid webcam chats -- participants can
record live video and you can't control where the
images may end up.
• Never deceive someone for malicious purposes.
This means that you should not pretend to be
someone else, or lie to a person online, when
your intentions for doing so are not wellintended.
• Everything you write online could potentially be
viewed by anyone. Some people tend to forget
this and say things that they shouldn't say or that
they would not want others to see.
• Just like offline, you should respect someone's
right to end a conversation with you. Not
respecting the other person's wishes is a type of
harassment and is disrespectful.
• Not to let other people - including friends convince them to do something they aren't
comfortable with.
• Report abuse to the service provider in cases
where someone is misusing a service to
inappropriately communicate with a minor.
• Report online child sexual exploitation to a
reporting tip line (in Canada, these reports
should go to local police or Cybertip.ca).
Using "netiquette"
When interacting with others online, help make sure
your kids' interactions are positive by encouraging
them to abide by the common rules of "netiquette"
(online etiquette):
• Don't say anything online that you would not
repeat or say in person. Why should this be an
issue? Because the anonymity of the Internet
may lead people to say things on the Internet
that are inappropriate, rude or embarrassing.
This can have offline consequences, like losing
friends.

Les enfants communiquent sur Internet avec des amis,
des membres de la famille et, parfois, des étrangers. Si
la plupart de ces communications sont positives, elles
peuvent parfois prendre une mauvaise tournure et
mener à l'exploitation sexuelle et à l'intimidation.
Exploitation des enfants en ligne
Pendant qu'ils sont en ligne, les enfants peuvent
rencontrer des personnes voulant les exploiter. En fait,
certaines personnes vont sur Internet pour tenter de
manipuler ou d'exploiter des jeunes. Les exploiteurs
peuvent même être des adolescents ou de jeunes
adultes; ce ne sont pas toujours des hommes âgés,
comme on est porté à le croire.
Les exploiteurs en ligne peuvent tenter de séduire
votre enfant en lui manifestant beaucoup d'attention et
en lui faisant des compliments et même des cadeaux.
Ils sont souvent patients et prêts à passer des
semaines, voire des mois à gagner sa confiance.
D'autres font des menaces ou prétendent être en
danger afin d'obtenir la coopération de votre enfant.
Certains sont des adolescents et d'autres se font
passer pour un adolescent en ligne; ils se lient d'«
amitié » avec votre enfant dans le but de le rencontrer
à des fins sexuelles. Certains introduiront lentement et
progressivement des propos sexuels dans les
conversations, tandis que d'autres agiront très
rapidement.
Comment se protéger

Les victimes de manipulation et d'abus en ligne
sont le plus souvent des adolescents.
Les sextos sont des messages textes à caractère
sexuel.
La plupart des activités en ligne ne présentent aucun
danger si l'on prend certaines précautions, mais les
suivantes pourraient mettre vos enfants en contact
avec des personnes voulant les exploiter :
• Clavardage
• Échange de photos
• Utilisation d'une cybercaméra
• Envoi de sextos
• Jeux en ligne
• Réseautage social en ligne
Les signes
Votre enfant peut commencer à montrer des signes
qu'il a des problèmes en ligne s'il se replie sur lui,
passe beaucoup de temps à l'ordinateur ou, au
contraire, cesse soudainement de l'utiliser.
Lorsque votre enfant utilise Internet, rappelez-lui
les conseils suivants :
• Ne jamais donner de renseignement personnel,
comme son adresse, son numéro de téléphone,
son mot de passe ou sa photo. Curieusement, il
est facile pour un étranger ou un autre jeune que
votre enfant a rencontré en ligne de le repérer
avec quelques renseignements seulement.
• Utiliser des pseudonymes qui ne permettent pas
de l'identifier, notamment dans les salles de
clavardage.
• Protéger sa réputation en ligne - ce qu'il dit et fait
en ligne peut en dire long à son sujet et influencer
l'opinion qu'on a de lui. Agir sans réfléchir peut

WHAT MAKES YOUNG PEOPLE
VULNERABLE TO EXPLOITATION?
Young people are vulnerable because they lack power –
socially and economically – and must rely on adults to
provide the necessities of life, as well as mature
guidance. If they are without strong support at home or in
their community, they are vulnerable to those who want to
exploit them.
Also, adolescents want to leave childhood behind and be
seen as adults. This can be manipulated by those wishing
to exploit them.
Adolescents are curious, and it’s normal for them to push
boundaries and to experiment; and because they are
young they don’t often make the best choices. The
Internet opens them up to contact with predators. It’s very
easy for them to get in too deep, before they realize that
they’re in danger, and then they are at risk of being
exploited because they don’t want to be caught doing
whatever it was they were doing. Parents need to be
talking about these issues with their children, and
monitoring Internet use and watching for danger signs.
Some factors make certain young individuals Whatever factors lead to sexual exploitation, once
even more vulnerable:

It’s crucial that there are supports available, and that

• lack of education or job skills
• meeting the wrong person, in person or online, and
growing to trust them
• a lack of awareness about sexual abuse/exploitation
Those who have been transported into Canada, often
from poor or unstable areas, are unable to seek support
and help for fear of being punished, either by their
captors or by the authorities. Sometimes they don’t speak
the language, so they cannot seek help; they have no
papers. They are very much at the mercy of those who
traffic them.
But even children who live in Canada and have
supportive families, schools and communities are
increasingly at risk, especially through the Internet.

FOR PARENTS & CAREGIVERS
Limiting your children's computer time is not enough to
safeguard them on the Internet. Here are tips you can
use to prepare your children for the online world:
Talk to your kids about the importance of their personal
information and stress that they should never disclose
personal details that would allow someone online to
contact them in real life. Things they should not reveal:

to break guidelines and get involved in potentially
dangerous online activities when they can surf without
caregiver involvement.
Reinforce that people online may not be who
they say they are.
Remind them that “anyone can be anybody” on the
Internet.
Consider using parental controls like Internet
filters or blocking software.
Always keep in mind that technological controls are not
substitutes for your communication and other
involvement. Remember that kids have multiple points of
access to the Internet and just because you have
protections on your computer does not mean they cannot
access it other places.

Internet. Voici dix conseils qui vous permettront de les
préparer au monde d’Internet :
Parlez à vos enfants.
L’une des choses les plus importantes que vous puissiez
faire pour sensibiliser vos enfants aux questions liées à
la cyber-sécurité, c’est de leur parler. Discutez des
avantages et des risques d’Internet. Faites-leur
comprendre qu’ils peuvent vous poser des questions ou
vous parlez s’ils rencontrent des difficultés en ligne.
Tout comme vous le feriez pour d’autres
activités, élaborez des lignes directrices et
une entente familiale entourant l’utilisation
d’Internet. Vos lignes directrices devraient
comporter les points suivants :
• Vos enfants ne devraient jamais prendre de
dispositions pour rencontrer une personne qu’ils ont
connue en ligne. S’ils le font, ils devraient être
accompagnés d’un adulte et rencontrer l’autre
personne dans un lieu public.
• Ils ne devraient jamais afficher des photos d’eux
mêmes en ligne pour des gens qu’ils ne
connaissent pas.
• Ils ne devraient jamais télécharger des images
provenant d’une source inconnue parce qu’il est fort
probable qu’elles soient sexuellement explicites.
• Ils ne devraient jamais répondre à des messages
électroniques ou réagir à des messages affichés
sur des forums lorsqu’ils sont suggestifs, obscènes,
belligérants ou harcelants.
• Ils devraient immédiatement alerter un adulte si
quelqu'un leur demande pour une rencontre, ou
font quelque chose qui les rend mal à l'aise.
Soyez proactif en passant du temps avec vos
enfants et en vous informant de leurs contacts dans
Internet.
Demandez-leur de vous montrer leurs sites préférés, les
choses à faire et ce qui est « cool ». Faites des activités
en famille dans Internet.
Mettez votre ordinateur dans une pièce
accessible à tous.

tout autre endroit privé. Il est trop facile de violer les

PROTECT YOURSELF!
The Internet is an amazing tool that connects us to the
world – but unfortunately, it can be used by people who
want to steal information or do harm.
By being smart about online activities, you can protect
yourself and your friends.
Be on alert if an online contact:
• asks you a lot of personal questions like where you
live, go to school or hang out. Never give an online
contact details that will let them locate you offline!
• offers you gifts or money (saying stuff like, “I can’t
believe your parents won’t help you out, how about
I send you some bucks?”) This is a strategy to find
out where you live or to make you feel like you owe
them something.
• asks where your computer is located – they might
be trying to figure out if you are “alone”.
• talks about kissing or sexy pictures, or tries to get
you to talk about sexual stuff (cyber sex) or send
pictures. Remember – everything sent over the
Internet can be shared with a million people, and
could last forever. Never send a photo, especially
one you don’t want everyone in the world to see, to
an online contact.
If any of these things are happening to you
online or in person, tell a trusted adult.
If anyone sends you pictures of sex, or talks to you about
sex or anything else inappropriate, or tries to get
information about you:
BLOCK IT, SAVE IT and REPORT IT to
www.cybertip.ca or phone 1-866-658-9022.
You don’t even have to know who they are! They are
experts - they will investigate.
If your friend is meeting someone they met online, they
could be in danger. Tell a trusted adult – it’s not telling
when you are trying to protect them!
The Bottom Line
Listen to your gut; if someone makes you uncomfortable
online or in person, get away and get help!
If you have made a mistake, it’s never too late to tell
someone you trust. A little embarrassment and a lecture
from your parents or other adults could save you a lot of
trouble and pain!
Above all, remember: you have a right to be safe and
happy. When someone tries to hurt you, it’s not your fault!

En faisant des activités en ligne avec prudence, vous
pouvez vous protéger ainsi que vos amis.
Soyez vigilant si un contact en ligne :
• vous pose beaucoup de questions personnelles,
comme où vous vivez, où vous allez à l’école ou où
vous vous tenez. Ne donnez jamais à un contact en
ligne des détails qui lui permettront de vous
localiser en personne!
• vous offre des cadeaux ou de l’argent (en disant
des choses comme : « Je ne peux pas croire que
tes parents ne t’aident pas! Veux-tu que je t’envoie
de l’argent? »). C’est une stratégie visant à savoir
où vous vivez ou pour vous faire sentir que vous lui
devez quelque chose.
• vous demande où se trouve votre ordinateur – il
peut essayer de découvrir si vous êtes « seul ».
• vous parle de baisers ou d’images sexy, ou essaie
de vous faire parler sur des sujets liés au sexe
(cyber sexe) ou envoie des images. N’oubliez pas –
tout ce qui est envoyé par Internet peut être
communiqué à des millions de personnes, et ce
pour une durée indéfinie. N’envoyez jamais de
photos à un contact en ligne, surtout si vous ne
voulez pas que le monde entier vous voie.
Si l’une ou l’autre de ces choses vous arrive
en ligne ou en personne, dites-le à un adulte
de confiance.
