The 2007 offering of these Contests drew an enrollment of almost 84 000, mainly from Canadian schools, but also including a growing number of international schools. The summary of results found in these pages is complied from voluntarily submitted reporting forms. These results are based on returns representing just under one third of the total of enrolled students, and so can be viewed as reasonably representative of the actual results. The average mark on the Grade 7 Gauss Contest rose from 89.87 in 2006 to 96.15 in 2007, while the average mark on the Grade 8 Contest decreased from 101.52 in 2006 to 91.17 in 2007. We are very pleased with these results from 2007. Of special note, the number of students represented in this report rose by almost 50% from roughly 26 600 in 2006 to more than 39 000 in 2007. We are very happy to see this significant increase. In 2006, we allowed schools to report their Gauss results online for the first time, a feature of which not many took advantage, most preferring to submit on paper. In 2007, we saw a significant increase in the number of schools choosing to report scores online. We are quite happy that more have chosen to use the online system. As it has always been in the past, the primary goals in setting the Contests is to provide a fun activity which also challenges students, and gives teachers an opportunity to work with their students on a mathematical activity outside the normal classroom routine. We extend our thanks to those students and teachers who participated this year, and hope that you will all continue to be active in such activities. Congratulations to all participants, and especially to those named in this report. We look forward to your names, and others, appearing in future lists of participants. Commentaires généraux Les concours Gauss de 7e et 8e année (Sec. I et II) sont les deux premiers concours d’une série de concours de mathématiques créées et administrées par le Concours canadien de mathématiques et le Centre d’éducation en mathématiques et en informatique. En 2007, ces concours ont mené à une inscription d’un peu plus de 84 000 étudiants, principalement d’écoles canadiennes mais incluant aussi un nombre croissant d’écoles internationales. Le sommaire des résultats, trouvé dans ces pages, est compilé de formulaires de rapport de résultats volontairement soumis. Ces résultats sont basés sur les retours représentant d’un tiers du total d’étudiants inscrits, et donc peut être vu comme représentant de façon raisonnable les résultats actuels. La note moyenne sur le Concours de Gauss de 7e année a monté de 89,87 en 2006 à 96,15 en 2007, pendant que la marque moyenne du Concours de 8e année a diminué de 101,52 en 2006 à 91,17 en 2007. Nous sommes heureux que beaucoup plus ont voulu utiliser le système en ligne. Comme cela a toujours été dans le passé, le but primaire du concours est de donné une activité amusante mais, qui défie aussi les étudiants et permet aux enseignants de travailler avec leurs étudiants sur une activité mathématique hors de la routine de salle de classe. Nous offrons nos remerciements aux étudiants et aux enseignants qui ont participé cette année et nous espérons que vous continuerez à être actif dans de telles activités. Félicitation à tous les participants, et surtout à ceux nommé dans ce rapport.
