PRESS BOOK / DOSSIER DE PRESSE NEW ALBUM - BLOW UP MY WORLD Fanny Bériaux “As soon as the first notes arise, one is blown away, “Mmmm, doo-i-doo-do-i-a.” The voice, its tone, its pose, its quality and color, the sound quality, the way the guitar blends in. Here is a vocal jazz album which is bound to please. One is not disappointed after listening to the 15 pieces. Blow Up My World is brilliantly put together. And one can't get enough. An unmistakable sign of quality.” Jean -Claude Vantroyen , Le Soir “ Fanny Bériaux plays with all the chords of her voice, from the most sensual to the most delirious. With scattered references on her way, the singer takes on a very personal path.” (DS) La Libre Belgique “(…) if you just listen closely, you will discover a true personality (…) who scats pertinently, whispers softly or rips through the melody. The repertoire - entirely by the guitarist Jarek Frankowski - seems tailor-made for the singer, from languorous ballads to folk or jazzy moods. The band of jazzmen surrounding her is not without significance in this album's success”. (J.P.G) Vers l’Avenir “(…) very sensual and jazzy, like a real vamp (…) She chose musicians with class who combine pop and jazz with perfection. Blow Up My World is a jazz record of a kind you would expect from Dani Klein. Bériaux is at least as successful in the genre” (GTB) Brussel Deze Week EN-FR » FR Le Soir / Culture EN translation: Alexandra Barreiros Music / A Belgian Discovery Fanny just wants to be able to sing “as much as possible” Fanny Bériaux, Jazz in the Blood THE ESSENSIALS: - Fanny Bériaux is an upcoming jazz singer, Belgian and full of talent - Her first album “Blow up my World” is a real success As soon as the first notes arise, one is blown away, “Mmmm, doo-t-doo-do-i-a”. The voice, its tone, its pose, its quality and color, the sound quality, the way the guitar blends in. Here is a vocal jazz album which is bound to be loved. One is not disappointed after listening to the 15 pieces. Blow Up My World is brilliantly put together. And one can't get enough. An unmistakable sign of quality. “You came all the way from nowhere“ sings Fanny Bériaux as the first song begins. Fanny who? She too seems to come out of nowhere with this first album... Twenty-nine years old, charming, determined, but still unaccustomed to interviews and thus a little vulnerable. All the more because she is alone at the interview, without her producer, sound engineer, and guitarist Jarek Frankowski, the craftsman of this album, the one behind its unique sound, shimmering, bewitching, rich in contrasting moods. “I have discovered jazz quite late”, she confesses.”I've always loved to sing, I wanted to become a music teacher and sing. But I wasn't too enthusiastic about lyrical singing, so after the Liège conservatory, I took up jazz at the Brussels conservatory, with Anca Pargel and Martha Mauss. Since then I've been singing jazz.” With two other girls in a band called Swallows, in theater plays, and now with Jarek. “I had auditioned for a musical. He was there too. He loved my voice, he called me and we made a demo. Then an album, this one, created in a studio, not on stage. It took some time: it had to mature. Our first piece was “Albinoni's Ghost”, which is also the first song on the album.” Jazz singing with pop and soul echoes In his Brussel's studio, Jarek Frankowski has come up with the album's sound, its technical perfection, but also its mood. Fanny's voice, Jarek's guitar, Sam Gerstmans double-bass, Jerôme Baudart's drums, Mathieu Van's piano and Jean Paul Estievenart's trumpet sound remarkably good. Jarek has also composed all the pieces. The lyrics are shared. Jarek, Fanny, and her brother Simon, each contributed their bit. “The songs speak of offbeat worlds,” Fanny Bériaux explains. “The stories are about a crazy cat, an aboriginal shaman, about what if I had been there 60 years ago, about the worlds of the street, hold-ups, bars... The lyrics are important because in this case it's not pure jazz: its jazz singing with pop and soul roots. We don't play long solos on stage. I want it to be accessible to all. We even tend to come close to a live performance act, it's a bit theatrical.” Fanny sings soul with a deep voice that is a bit reminiscent of Peggy Lee, the singer from “Fever”. She can be sensual or ironic. “Before, I had references,” she says. “Now it seems immodest, I strive to go back into myself. In order to give to the public one has to first let oneself be filled with vital strength. Of course that deeper being that I go in search of is inspired by all that I have listened to. Jacques Brel, Matt Elliot, Roberto da Fonseca, Phillipe Léotard, people who exude that magical special thing.” That's what she wants, to go and find deep within herself that something which transcends her own truth. “It's very physical, the deeper you go into yourself, the more you get in touch with other people's roots.” Is it likeYoga, Transcendental meditation? “It may be similar but it's very physical. Before going on stage, I look for the “chi”, the universal energy, down here at the center of the body, with the voice of course.” Here's the album, here's the tour, and what about tomorrow? “A second album, yes, a bit more gutsy, more spontaneous, less polished. Otherwise my ambitions are simple. I don't dream about becoming a huge star. I would just like to be surrounded by a good team who can take on a series of tasks so that I'm free to give myself entirely to my work. If I am allowed to sing and live from it in a decent and comfortable manner, I'm fine with it. My sole ambition is to sing as much as possible.” Jean-Claude Vantroyen, Le Soir La Libre Belgique FR-EN translation: Alexandra Barreiros Jazz, etc... Blow up My World Fanny Bériaux *** Fanny, what a lovely name, slightly out of fashion for such a modern young artist. Fanny Bériaux releases a thoroughly original first album, written by the guitarist Jarek Jankowski, the journalist Simon Bériaux, and herself. In this open minded jazz, we rediscover the influence of David Lynx who treats the voice as an instrument, and that of Marc Moulin with Bert Joris, for the coupling of a Fender Rhodes Piano and a muted trumpet with a very brassy sound. Supported still by a very solid bass, Fanny Bériaux plays with all the chords of her voice, from the most sensual to the most delirious. With scattered references on her way, the singer takes on a very personal path. The young woman's mellow voice gives it this enveloping warmth, whether she pays tribute to Cézanne, accompanies the piano (“Behind Your Smile”) or the bass (“I'll Rob a Bank”). Though it remains rather languorous throughout, a track like “Chaotic” grants itself more upbeat popstyle rhythms. Fifteen fine and original precious pieces. Fanny Bériaux has concerts scheduled until March 2010. See information at: www.fannyberiaux.com. Get to know Fanny Bériaux... With “Blow Up My World” Fanny Bériaux creates a colorful and refreshing first album with clear pop and jazz notes. The young artist from Brussels has been working on it for the last three years. Fanny comes from a classical background, and after winning a first prize in Music Theory at the Liège Royal Conservatory, she received the first prize in Jazz at the Brussels Royal Conservatory. But rest assured, her world is rich: among her influences one can quote Alice Russell, Madeleine Peyroux, Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, Rita Hayworth, Melody Gardot, etc... Her meeting with Jarek Frankowski, producer and sound engineer, was to open new doors. He had already participated in the production of several studio recordings (Jean-Louis Rassinfosse, Philip Catherine, Zoé, Stéphanie Blanchoud) and various film music projects (Jaco Van Dormael, Arnaud Demunynck, Marian Handwerker) as well as in projects connected with the world of dancing (Fréderic Flamand, Michèle Noiret). Together they decided to venture into the creation of this new opus. Sung in English, “Blow Up My World” exhibits 15 original tracks which open up a warm and pleasant, slightly off-beat world, filled with young and languorous lovers, crazy cats and aboriginal shamans. In the wake of Melody Gardot or Madeleine Peyroux, Fanny Bériaux, the young artist from Brussels, warms up and touches one’s heart with this first album filled with tender atmospheres. It has a softness which at times takes on a more challenging and edgy tone, which is a pleasant addition. And you don’t have to be a purist in order to be moved. FR translation: Alexandra Barreiros Le Soir / La Culture / Thursday December 24, 2009 Music. VANTROYEN, JEAN-CLAUDE The singer had a concert at the Music Village. Ah! The voice of Fanny Bériaux! EN Review Have female jazz singers ever been more popular than today? Mélody Gardot, Madeleine Peyroux, Diana Krall, Dee Dee Bridgewater... In Belgium as well, genuine talent is emerging: Mélanie de Biasio, Chrystel Wautier, Barbara Wiernick, Lena Ayal, Tutu Puoane, Judy Niemack (Indonesian, South-African and American, respectively, but living in Belgium)... And now, a new singer springs out of this fertile ground: Fanny Bériaux. We said (Le Soir of November 12) how much we liked her first album, Blow Up My World. Fifteen jazz tracks that one can listen to over and over again, enraptured by the versatility of the talent and voice of Fanny Bériaux. But even that pales in comparison to her performance on stage. We had the pleasure of seeing her perform on Tuesday evening, at the Music Village, in Brussels. The flame in the packed jazz club refused to die out, and at the end of the show the waves of enthusiastic applause shook the old walls as the endless cheering and repeated demands for “one more song” went on. When an audience has the chance to participate in such an event, it asks for more. But Fanny was exhausted. She had clearly given her very best to win us over. Why was this infatuation so tremendously overwhelming? First of all because Fanny Bériaux has a remarkable voice, a voice which sinks into the low notes and rides effortlessly over the high notes, while playfully turning joyful or mysterious, ironic or loving. But mostly, because she utterly surrenders to what she sings. She is wholly in her songs, versatile, multifaceted, eclectic, committed, tense or zen, groovy or explosive according to the piece. Equally agile is her band, with Manu Bonetti on the guitar, Martin Mereau on the drums, and Boris Schmidt on the double-bass, they become tender in the ballads, inventive in the ironic pieces, frantic in the swings, and even psychedelic in a completely offbeat fusion jazz-rock mode. From this concert we shall not forget the superb Cézanne, the self-destructive Chaotic, nor the electrifying and moving gospel sung by fanny alone, a cappella, nor, at the end of the concert, the rock adaptation of that old blues tune by B.B King and Lou Rawls, I’d Rather Drink Muddy Water - an impressive and very exciting finale by an artist from whom we expect even greater things. Jazz News: novembre 2012 Paris Capitale: septembre 2012 Orion 309: octobre 2012 Homme de Luxe: octobre 2012 La Savoie: novembre 2012 On top Audio: juillet 2012 BIO: EN The first that strikes you thing about Fanny Bériaux is her voice. Soft and sensual in the low notes, powerful and precise in the high, but also outstandingly expressive...In a generous performance, she truly lives every moment of her singing, experiencing emotions deeply, in a complete wholehearted enjoyment of her own voice from its warmest and roundest to its most delirious and heart rending expressions, while passing through a hint of nostalgia and a touch of tenderness. Born in Brussels in 1980, she comes to feel a strong attraction for singing and experiences it already in childhood not only as a genuine pleasure, but as a physical need. Music in general also interests her, and very soon she starts to study classic piano in an academy, while spontaneously fiddling with the chords of a guitar from time to time. It is, however, very clear that singing is her natural calling, the thing which makes her tick. At eighteen a world of possibilities opens up together with the need to choose a clear path. Fanny Bériaux will chose two: on one side, naturally, music, and on the other, university. She enters the Liège Music Conservatory where she is awarded a first prize the very first year. Simultaneously, she studies communication, while never ceasing to feel that singing is her true calling. Up until then, she had been following some singing classes, but in styles which fell short of touching her deeply. It is then that she meets Anca Parghel, a professor of vocal jazz at the Brussels Conservatory. The singer's vocal mastery fascinates her and she enters the Conservatory in 2002. There she is given her first award in vocal jazz, at the same time as she completes her degree at the university. Two years later, amidst the serendipity of chance auditions, she meets the composer Jarek Frankowsky, who, spellbound by such a unique artist, decides to help her to release her first album. Thus « Blow Up My World » becomes available in stores in 2009. In it the singer reveals a warm and low voice, coloured with a rich palette, in songs both jazzy and of mixed influence, traveling between jazz, pop and soul. One can find in it, among many others, the influence of Madeleine Peyroux, Erykah Badu, Fiona Apple, Melody Gardot, Anita O Day... The album is warmly received by the press, prompting a series of concerts in Belgium and in Europe (Paris, Istanbul, Sibiu, Ploiesti, Luxembourg...). The singer also performs in international festivals (Comblain Festival, Sibiu jazz festival, festival international Echternach, Gaumes jazz festival...). The public and the press continue to follow her performances with a marked and growing enthusiasm as they discovered behind the album's voice a rich and intense stage performance. Fanny Bériaux's world is vast and stretches to the horizon. She defines herself primarily as a singer and is attracted to a variety of music. In the versatile openness which characterizes her, she takes an active part in a great number of projects and attracts proposals from artists coming from very different backgrounds. Among other things, she recorded the female voices for the theater play « La princesse Turandot » directed by Dominique Serron, sang an evening as an alto solist the Stabat Mater by Pergolèse and performed a duet with David Bartholomé (singer of Sharko) on his latest album « Cosmic woo Woo » (2001). ! « Blow Up My World » sera dans les bacs en 2009. !
