The Annual Burgundy Tasting Vintage 2006
The Annual Burgundy Tasting Vintage 2006 in association with Les Domaines Familiaux de Tradition 9th March 2009 Vintners’ Hall London The 2006 vintage Following the 'near perfect' 2005 vintage, 2006 presented major challenges in both vineyard and cellar. After a long, harsh winter with abundant snow and rain, the month of June brought dry and sunny weather, and flowering took place under ideal conditions. July was very hot and dry, with the threat of drought. Hail hit vineyards in Chambolle and Gevrey on the 27th of July. Damage was worst in Griottes and Chapelle-Chambertin. The weather throughout August and the first half of September was cool and wet, with slightly heavier rainfall in the Côte de Beaune than in the Côte de Nuits. Ripening slowed, and drought threatened. The return of sunshine, warm weather, and a drying north wind from midSeptember saved the harvest, but even so careful timing and strict selection were imperative. Yet the wines have proved much better than originally thought. At first, critics deemed the whites generally more successful than the reds. Those harvested early combine ripe fruit with fresh acidity, while later-picked examples are softer and more opulent. Although initially the reds were judged to be of lesser quality, many have gained weight and depth during maturation. The best are charming wines with elegance and expressiveness, to be enjoyed in the mediumterm. This is truly a burgundy-lover's vintage with many wines that will delight and surprise. WHITES 1.
