Depuis quelques années on constate un regain d’intérêt pour les sociétés sahéliennes. Ce regain
s’explique par le fait que lesdites sociétés sont affectées par plusieurs formes de violences internes et
externes qui ont non seulement modifié les façons dont les groupes interagissent, mais surtout
comment ils définissent leurs identités diverses. L’objectif de cet atelier est de susciter une réflexion
critique sur l’actualité des processus sociopolitiques du Sahel, plus particulièrement au Mali et au
Niger. Pour ce faire, nous voudrons relier la configuration historique et politique du Sahel à ces
processus qui ont modelé et continuent de modeler le Sahel sur les plans géographique, politique,
moral aussi bien qu’idéologique. L’atelier tentera d’explorer la nature des identités sahéliennes
encontexte, en d’autres termes les effets de l’instabilité politique et de l’autre, l’internationalisation
des politiques locales. Par conséquent, l’atelier se propose d’être une plateforme de comparaison
théorique et empirique à travers une série de débats méthodologiques sur les interactions entre les
processus de construction de l’Etat, du capitalisme, de la migration, des systèmes sécuritaires, de la
production économique et des identités en perpétuel changement. Les participants seront invités à
contribuer à cette discussion au travers d’une reflexion sur les histoires sociales, les complexités
culturelles et les traditions politiques qui ont eu cours, et continuent d’avoir cours parmi différents

groupes présents dans la region. Nous sommes particulièrement intéressés à repenser le statut
épistémologique des connaissances ‘locales’ dans le contexte des discours qui se chevauchent.
Autrement dit des projets de recherche qui se penchent sur les articulations, les pratiques, les
expressions, les élaborations, les imaginations d’une identité ‘dogon’ ou ‘touareg’ ou ‘haussa’.
L’exemple séminal de ces questions peut être tiré du travail de George Klute sur la notion du ‘travail’
ou celui d’Hélène Claudot-Hawad sur la signification culturelle et intellectuelle de la consommation
du thé chez les Touareg. L’atelier vise également à initier une enquête de terrain sur la vie des
sahéliens en temps de crise. Sur ce plan, la situation politique actuelle du Mali offre un champ
propice. Etant donné le contexte global actuel, nous sommes intéressés par les questions telles que:
que signifie être ‘Malien’ ou ‘Touareg’ en temps de guerre et de radicalisme violents? Les éléments
de réponse à cette question et à des questions similaires peuvent mieux aider à comprendre comment
la violence et la crise politique ont affecté les visions et les pratiques identitaires des individus et des
communautés, mais surtout comment elles ont conduit, de manière décisive, à la rupture ou au
renouvellement des règles socioculturelles qui structurent le présent des sociétiés sahéliennes.
Des propositions peuvent etre soumis sur les thèmes suivants mais pas exclusivement:
-Temps et espaces de l’identité ethnique au Sahel
-Etre et devenir Haoussa, Touareg, Dogon, Songhai, au 21ieme siècle: entre mythes et expériences
-Sédentarisme, nomadisme, pastoralisme and identiés Saheliennes
-Migration, déplacements et identités chez les jeunes Sahéliens
-La politisation de l’ethnicité au Sahel, entre passé et présent
-Les ressources culturelles des demandes identitaires
-Modes de vie au Sahel en temps de Crise
-Ethnies, Territorialité et frontières
-Ethnicité, interdépendence et travail,
-Interaction inter-culturelle et intégration sociale au Sahel

Sahelian Identities in Times of Crisis, Past and Present

Recent years have witnessed growing interest in Sahelian societies as they confront the effects of
various forms of violence, internal and external, that have disrupted or modified the way individuals
and groups relate to each other and conceive of self. The aim of the proposed workshop is to provoke
a critical reflection around ongoing socio-political processes in the Sahelian region, particularly in
Mali and by linking them to historical and political configurations that have given shape, and
continue to give shape and form to the Sahel as a geographical, a political, a moral as well as an
ideological field of enquiry. In particular, the workshop aims to explore the nature of Sahelian
identities in a context of political instability on one hand, and an increasing internationalization of
local politics on another. It is therefore intended as a platform for a comparative theoretical and
empirical engagement with a range of debates and methodologies on the interactions between state
building processes, capitalism, migration, security regimes, economic production and shifting
identities. Scholars will be invited to contribute to the discussion by revisiting social histories,
cultural complexities, and political traditions amongst the various Sahelian groups.We are specifically
interested in re-thinking the epistemological status of ‘local’ accounts in the context of overlapping
narratives. This means, amongst other things, an interest in research projects that investigate
articulations, practices, expressions, elaborations, imaginations of a ‘Dogon’ or ‘Tuareg’ or ‘Hausa’
identity in context; seminal examples of these are George Klute’s work on the notion of ‘work’ or
Helene Claudot-Hawad’s work on the cultural and intellectual meanings of tea-drinking amongst the
Tuareg. As the workshop seeks to initiate a close investigation on the lives of Sahelians in times of
crisis, the ongoing political situation in Mali provides an adequate field of enquiry. We are interested
in questions such as, given the current global context, “what does it mean to be ‘Malian’ and ‘Tuareg’

in the age of the War on Terror (WoT) and violent forms of activism across West Africa”? Elements of
answer to this and similar questions will help us better understand how political crisis and violence
affect individuals and communities’ understanding and ‘practice’ of identity and crucially
(dis)continued subscriptions to socio-cultural codes that seem to mark the present time.
We welcome proposals for from scholars working across a range of
fields. Potential topics for papers include:

--Being and Becoming Tuareg/Hausa/Dogon in the 21st Century: between myth and experience
--Sedentarianism, Nomadism, Pastoralism and Sahelian Identities
--Migration, Displacement and Identity amongst Sahelian Youth
--the politicization of Ethnicity in the Sahel, Past and Present
--the Cultural Resources of Ethnic Claims
--Sahelian Modes of Life in Times of Crisis
--Ethnicity, Territoriality, and Frontiers
--Ethnicity, Interdependence and Labour, Cultural Interaction and Social Integration

workshop organisers.
