The collection includes travel accounts relating to Africa, the Caribbean, and the English colonies in North America, some never before printed, others translated into French from the English or the Portuguese. In his preface Justel explains that he had the accounts printed in the order in which copy arrived from the translators - hence the peculiar order of the book, often readjusted by later binders. This copy, still in its first binding, retains the original order. The Ligon is illustrated with plates of Caribbean plants and fruits, scenes of native life, and pottery ; maps of Barbados, Jamaica, Abyssinia and a map of Maryland, Virginia, and the east coast of North America, engraved by R. [PANAMA CANAL]. -LE CANAL INTEROCÉANIQUE D’APRÈS LES DOCUMENTS OFFICIELS. Paris, Ch. Delagrave, Editeur, Collection Muret, [1885]. Coloured plaster cast model (148 x 410 mm.), lithographed. 1 engraved map (457 x 360 mm.), handcolored. Scarce and striking plaster cast representation of the Panama Canal: one of the largest and most difficult engineering projects ever undertaken, that made it possible for ships to travel between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans in half the time previously required. This Cast relief is one of the first representation of this key conduit for international maritime trade and the shorter, faster, safer route to the U.S. West Coast and to nations in and along the Pacific Ocean allowed those places to become more integrated with the global economy. For the present plan, its author, the French mathematician and surveyor Charles Muret, won a goldmedal from the World Exhibition in Antwerp in 1885. World Cat locates only one copy in libraries around the world, one in France. In 2010, this copy was on exhibit to at the BnF (National French Library) as part of the exhibition: « Des trésors pour l’été, enrichissements remarquables de la Bibliothèque nationale de France ». [PREVOST (ANTOINE-FRANÇOIS)]. -VOYAGES DU CAPITAINE ROBERT LADE EN DIFFÉRENTES PARTIES DE L'AFRIQUE, DE L'ASIE ET DE L'AMÉRIQUE. A Paris, chez Didot, 1744. 2 vols. 12mo. 2 folding maps. Contemporary calf. First edition of this charming literary forgery attributed to Abbé Prévost, who pretend to give the translation of the account of the travels of Captain Robert Lade, who never exists. The accuracy of some information regarding the new colony of Georgia, founded ten years earlier, drawn from English sources, gave credit to the theory of a translation of an English text. But there is no sign of a Captain Lade, and it is more likely a fancy of Prévost, who translate numerous important English text during his exile in London, and among them major travel relation as Henry Neville's Isle of Pines (1668), and authored a compilation of voyages. The work is illustrated with two folding maps, one of them being: “Carte d’une partie de l’Amérique septentrionale”, engraved by Bellin. Fine copy. $ 2 100 24. Among them, are German scientists from the Hamburg Tropen Institute (BNI for tropical medicine) who worked at the Tongshi University and at Peking Union Medical College (including Dr Nauck, and Kessler). Several pictures are portraits of Hu Shih, famous Chinese philosopher, essayist and diplomat. Hu is widely recognized today as a key contributor to Chinese liberalism and language reform in his advocacy for the use of written vernacular Chinese. He was influential in the May Fourth Movement, one of the leaders of China's New Culture Movement, was a president of Peking University. This log, very readable, is more than an account of daily navigation. Each event is related in great details, most of the official acts from French and local authorities are transcribed. The Uranie, her captain and her crew were the main actors of the events leading to the restoration of the French protectorate on the island. The wealth of the information in the log and the annexed pieces make of this amazing document a great first hand historical source, shining a new light on the history of Tahiti and the French presence in the archipelago. $ 55 700 67. CORVETTE DESCURBIERTA - ORIGINAL MAPS FROM SPANISH SCIENTIFIC EXPLORATIONS. [GONZALES (ANTONIO)]. MANUSCRIPT. -[A COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL SEA CHARTS AND VIEWS. INDONESIA, CHILI, PERU, MEXICO, CALIFORNIA, INDONESIA, SINGAPORE, CHINA SEA, PATAGONIA.]. [Dessiné à bord de la corvette. Drawn aboard the ship] 1815-1816. 1 1 vol. folio. 18 manuscript ll., (ink drawings, 3 hand-coloured, 1 recto-verso, some folding). Bound in a contemporary album. A large set of manuscript maps and coast views drawn by Antonio Gonzales aboard the famous Spanish exploration ship “Descurbierta” (Discovery) during exploration journeys from 1810 to 1816. The corvette Descurbierta is famous for being one of the two ships (with the Atrevida) of the Malaspina's expedition (1786-1788, and 1789-1794), the most important voyage of discovery dispatched by Spain in the 18th century. Alessandro Malaspina (1754-1810), under a Spanish royal commission, undertook his voyage around the world to increase geographic and scientific knowledge in general: inspired by Cook’s and La Perouse’s voyages, Malaspina’s expedition counted numerous scientists aboard, and was conducted in a highly scientific manner. The second purpose of the expedition was to check on the status of Spain's vast empire, especially along the west coast of North America, where the Russians and the British were expanding their influence. After this great expedition, the Descurbierta stayed in service as a scientific ship up to 1828. The 22 guns corvette was stationed in Monte Video from 1804 to 1806 and Callao (Lima) from 1810 to 1816. In 1816, she went back to Cadiz in 1816 for repairing. From 1816 to 1819, she was again based in South America to help General Morillo and Laborde expeditions against insurgents in Colombia and Venezuela. Back to Cadiz in 1821, the Corvette was dropped out of service in 1828. The present collection of 18 original drawings was made by Officer Antonio Gonzales aboard of the Descubierta from 1810 to 1816, during different campaigns. The first plate is dated from 1810, and is one of the most striking leaves of the set. It is dedicated to Patagonia (recto-verso), with many views and coastal profiles and an amazing representation of an Iceberg observed by lat. 57° and 69 west, in the South of Patagonia. A large series, dated from 1816, is dedicated to Asia (China Sea, Philippines, Indonesia, and Malaysia). Then they cross the Pacific to arrive in Gulf of California, and going north, we find important maps of Chili and Peru (including a beautiful map of Conception: “Plano de la Bahia de Concepcion de Chile”). The last chart depicts Saint Helena. The quality of the charts is very nice, they are both accurate, richly captioned, and aesthetically realized. Gonzales was stationed at the corvette for at least 6 years. His personal file is at the Spanish navy central archives. Those maps and views are totally unknown and there is no recorded publication for the details of these campaigns, a continuation of Malaspina expedition round the world. It proves that the Spanish continued their scientific and cartographic exploration with the Descurbierta. $ 36 000 68. Contemporary full sheep with coat of arms of the King of France. Exceptional onboard document of this rare and fabulous maritime atlas, a masterpiece by the greatest French hydrographer of the 18th century, with maps of all the coastlines known at the time. Bound with the coat of arms of the King of France, the atlas was taken by the English aboard the frigate la Nymphe, off the coasts of Ushant August 10, 1780, during one of the naval battles of the American War of Independence which took place on European waters. In the context of the war at the end of the 18th century, and of the rivalry between the French and British Navy, maritime atlases, were strategic tools, and this “Hydrographie Françoise” more so than any other, because its purpose was to provide the best maritime charts for the French ships that were fighting on the American side against the British. (The handwritten captions throughout most of the atlas are prices for individual maps and all include the same mention: “for sailors”). These atlases were not the kind to be kept in a library, but precious tools, based on the observations of the travelers and continuously improved upon, as reflect in the present copy. It was bound with the engraved title page of the edition of 1737-1765, but the index includes maps printed after 1765 (until 1772), and the copy was augmented by six maps that do not appear in the index (until 1776), as well as 14 pages of text from the Versailles edition of 1773. The later maps are signed by Verdun de la Crenne and were done during the campaigns of the Flore (1771-1772) and of the Isis led by Fleurieu in 1768-1769. The captions explain that the maps were created using the latest technology of the day that could measure longitude (maritime clocks). As such, the atlas was aboard the Nymphe, until then a French frigate, that cruised the English Chanel under the command of Chevalier du Rumain (1743-1780) who had come back from the Caribbean Sea, where he took part in the Battle of Martinique (1780) under La Motte Piquet’s command (cf. La France Maritime, vol. 2, p. 345). Monsieur de Kerneis, in his article of the “Bulletin de la société Académique de Brest” (1891-92), wrote that the Comte d’Estaing called Charles Marie de Trolong, chevalier du Rumain, the “Duguay-Trouin of his time” for his bravery. Du Rumain received the rank of Captain April 4, 1780 and commanded the Nymphe from May 8, 1780. He was killed when the English attacked his ship. Kerguelen gives a gripping narration of this battle in his work “Relation des combats et des évènements de la Guerre Maritime de 1778 entre la France et l'Angleterre”. With the famous battle of the frigate la Surveillante against HMS Québec, six months earlier, this battle (Ushant, 10 August 1780), is the other major event of the American conflict which took place on European waters. In the Bulletin de la Société Académique de Brest, Monsieur de Kerneis dedicated a long article to the two battles in which the two captains were killed. The battle of the Nymphe against the Flora was deadly. The Flora, a new 36-gun frigate, carrying 18 pounders on her main deck, and an experimental addition of six 18 poundre carronades, felt in with the Nymph that could carry 40 guns but was only mounted with 32. In the ensuing action the better-armed Flora overpowered the larger French ship. The officers were hit the hardest, several died, and others were severely injured. Kerguelen states that out of a crew of 291 men, 55 were killed and 70 wounded (other sources indicate 81 wounded). The Flora, with a crew of 259 men only lost 9 men and 17 were wounded. Captain William Peere (1742-1832), commander of the Flora, annotated the copy of the present atlas three times: at the beginning of each volume and the map of the English Channel and Ushant, showing the exact place of the battle. This officer who also return from North American did not play an important role in the Revolutionary War, unlike the frigate Nymph. If these battles, far from the main scene of the events, might seem of minor importance, the story of the Nymph shows they had direct repercussions on America. Indeed, the frigate Nymph, now under the British flag, was sent to America under the command of Captain John Ford. The Nymph took part in several battles: serving as a repeating ship (relaying signals to other ships) during the Battle of the Chesapeake (5 September 1781). She captured three privateers in October 1781. In 1782, she was present at the Battle of the Saints on 12 April. She kept serving during the Napoleonic War, but was wrecked in 1810. Beside the frigate, the English took what is certainly considered Bellin’s masterpiece. First hydrographer of the French Royal Navy, Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772), spent 50 years of his life in the “Dépôt des Cartes et Plans”. His three major works are his version of the “Neptune François”, the “Petit Atlas Maritime”, and the present “Hydrographie Françoise”. This work is rarer than the other two, and was always being enhanced and updated. The maps, in large format print, are magnificent; the quality of the engraving exceptional. They were updated with the latest observations collected by Bellin, and show the mastery of the cartographer. Bellin indicated in the captions the history of the maps, their purpose and the routes taken by navigators that enabled their creation. The first volume is dedicated to Europe and Asia, the second to America and Africa. The copy includes three manuscript documents that relay positions and calculations of routes - two around Ushant, and the other is dated the very day of the battle). EXTRAICT DE PLUSIEURS TRAICTEZ DE MEDICINE COMME DE AVICENNE, DE RASIS, DE CONSTANTIN DE ISAAC & PLATAIRE, SELON LE COMMUN USAGE. BIEN CORRECT. Imprimé à Paris, par Pierre le Caron. [1498-1499]. 1 vol. folio. 126 ll. (double column, 52-53 lines), 308 wood engravings, printer device on title page and on recto of colophon leaf. 18th century full vellum (tinted in green). Utmost scarce incunabula Parisian edition of the famous “Grant Herbier en François”, which was used as a model for the following editions. Only referenced copy in private hands of this work by Pierre Le Caron, who was the first to illustrate it with French woodcuts. The first French edition of the book, entitled “Arbolaire”, was published in Besancon (1486-88) by Petrus Metlinger. In contradiction to the tradition which wants that the French herbarium were translations of German texts, the “Arbolaire” is a French translation of the “Antidotarium”, “Circa Instans” by Mattheus Platearius (cf. Meyer, “Geschischte der Botanik”). Matthaeus Platearius was a physician from the medical school at Salerno, he is told to be the author of a 12th century Latin manuscript regarding the use of medicinal herbs: « Circa Instans » or : « Liber Simplici Medicina ». 264 of the 474 chapters of the present “Grant Herbier en François” come from this work. The prolog of the “Grant Herbier en François” says: “En cette présente besogne est notre propos et intention de traiter des simples médecines. Et est à savoir que la médecine des simples est dite simple pour ce qu’elle est telle que nature l’a produite et formée. ” The Besancon edition by Metlinger (“Arbolaire”) is illustrated with German woodcuts (from “Gart des Gesundheit” or “Hortus Sanitatis”. For practical reasons, this kind of work was profusely illustrated. The first Parisien edition, ten years later by Le Caron, is the first to be illustrated with French woodcuts. It is scarce, but not as scarce as the following edition (the present copy): only three libraries reference this corrected and enhanced version. According to our researches, the present copy would be the only one in private hands. The corrections are important, among them: Le Caron removed one woodcut, added three more (308 illustrations, vs 306 in the 1498 edition), the presentation of the text is not the same (52-53 lines vs 46). The following editions of the 16th century were based on this version. The extensive index which is printed on the lastest 16 pages, lists the plants according to their medicinal use; prescriptions against nervous diseases are followed by a list of plants recommended for the eye, ear, nose, teeth, stomach, skin, etc. Then the herbs are listed in alphabetical order. The 308 woodcuts of plants and animals are printed within a line border and are here extant in brilliant impressions. Utmost rare and precious copy of this cornerstone book in history of French printed herbarium. POR 105. Autograph preparatory work of a study by Duhamel du Monceau on the air. Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782), one of the important scientists of the 18th century, in relation with the great minds of his time (Buffon, Malesherbes, Jussieu), often in conflict with the “Encyclopédistes”, was Member of the Académie des Sciences from 1728, and the author of more than 60 works in various fields. The present manuscript is a rough draught of a study on the quality on the air, undertaken to a larger work, he published in 1759 “Moyen de conserver la santé aux equipages des vaisseaux”. Duhamel du Monceau wrote in 1745 a Memoir for the Académie, of which he refers to in the present text, on the quality of the air, but in 1746, the French Navy faced a health disaster in the squadron of the Duke d’Anville, so Duhamel decided to find out how to improve the quality of the air in the ships. His researches allowed him to identify several factors that occasion the epidemics at sea, and to propose solutions, that already presented in this manuscript. Indeed, in these pages, referring to important works of scientists as Du Hales, he explains the basic rules to keep a clear air. Rare autograph manuscript. $ 5 200 110. BRUYAS & FILS. -[MANUSCRIPT AND WATERCOLOUR FRENCH TRADE CATALOGUE]. Lyon, circa 1850. Exceptional French hardware trade catalogue containing 159 fine and detailed watercolour plates, 6 plates with imprints and one sample sheet on together 91 leaves, depicting a large range of tools and everyday wares in different models. Made for Bruays & Son, a company settled in Lyon, this kind of catalog was a capital work document for those shops. The drawings were used as schemes to make the depicting wares, but the book was also an advertisement catalog for their customers who chose between the different models. The diversity of the present book shows the importance of the company that supplied people for anything they need for daily life. Are proposed: locks with keys, screws, copper candlesticks, copper decorative knobs(for beds), clocks and all the detailed pieces, kitchen accessories: knifes, coffee grinders, pots, saucepans, scissors, 112. La Chapelle. chimney hooks; but also bellows, brooms, rat-traps, lamps and headlights, fire weapons, etc. This set gives interesting sociological and historical information, because we can figure out concretely what were the daily wares used in 19th century. It also testified another relationship with those tools, characteristic of the pre-consumerism era, when objects, unique, were made to last. Indeed, a great aesthetic sense is present in each of the original watercolours depicting wares, displayed in different models, different material and different shape, and this dimension is as important as the solidity and functional qualities of the objet. Contemporary full leather in dark colors, romantic style with embossed and gilded in both planes and back, decorated with pieces of mother of pearl. A wonderful example of this kind of Mexican work using flowers and feathers, executed by a scientist: Rafael Montes de Oca. He was a naturalist, botanist, ornithologist, professor and 19th century Mexican illustrator. He worked a long time on the border between Mexico and Guatemala, where he collected and classified many plant species. Later extended his studies to almost all of Mexico, touring Chiapas, Oaxaca, Puebla and Veracruz. He devoted much of his efforts in the observation and study of Mexican hummingbirds. In 1874, he published in the journal "Nature " series of papers regarding hummingbirds in Mexico, illustrated with the pictures that drew on the advice of the painter José María Velasco. Some of these sheets would become part of the next year the first edition of his major work; "Ensayo Ornitológico de los Troquilideos ó Colibríes" (1875), which contained detailed descriptions of 48 species of Mexican hummingbirds. This beautiful herbal, made in person by Montes de Oca, was a gift from the powerful Antonio de Mendizabal to Doña Francisca Temple Ajuria, daughter of Californian landowner Jonathan Temple and wife of Gregorio Ajuria, Spanish businessman who tried to overthrow the Mexican government supporting the Mexican soldiers of Santos Degollado, funded by his wealthy father.
