Marie-Joëlle Zahar is professor of political science and research director of the Research Network on Peace
Operations at the Université de Montréal. A Middle-East expert with solid academic and field experience of
conflicts in the Balkans and Africa as well, she researches and works in the areas of conflict-resolution and
post-conflict peace-building. She has developed particular expertise on power-sharing as well as the dynamics
of violence in peace processes. She is fully trilingual (French, Arabic and English) and a citizen of Lebanon
and Canada. She is the author or co-author of over 40 articles and book chapters and has co-edited four books.
Because of her policy-grounded research, Professor Zahar is often sought after for her expertise. She has
conducted missions and/or research assignments for, among others, Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs
and International Trade (DFAIT) as well as the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)
at the United Nations. She has served as consultant for the programs “Peace and Democratic Governance in
Iraq” and “Peace and Democratic Governance in the Sudan” financed by DFAIT and conducted by the Forum
of Federations, one of the world’s leading think-tanks in the design of federal institutions, as well as for the
United States Institute of Peace. More recently, she was the senior expert responsible for developing the Forum
of Federations’ program in support of the Popular Consultations process in South Kordofan and Blue Nile
states in the Sudan. She has also conducted field missions for the Forum in Jordan and has worked and
conducted independent research in Lebanon, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Angola, Mozambique and South Africa.
