A travers le Monaco Solar Boat
Challenge, la volonté du Yacht Club de
Monaco, présidé par S.A.S. le Prince
Souverain Albert II, est de mettre
en lumière une tradition maritime
d’innovation, bien ancrée en Principauté.
Rappelons que le Prince Albert Ier,
navigateur émérite, que l’on appelait
« le Prince des Mers », a été le pionnier
de l’océanographie moderne. Il avait
accueilli avec enthousiasme l’initiative
de Camille Blanc, président de la SBM,
de créer un Meeting International de
Canots Automobiles. Dès 1904, on vit
affluer les industriels du monde entier
venus présenter, aux côtés des yachts
royaux en escale pour la saison d’hiver,
leurs dernières innovations dans le
domaine du moteur à explosion à une
clientèle internationale.
Un siècle plus tard, c’est exactement ce
même esprit que l’on retrouve dans cette
compétition, seule la source d’énergie a
changé.
En collaboration avec l’Union
Internationale Motonautique (UIM), notre
objectif aujourd’hui est d’encourager,
les universités et écoles d’ingénieurs,
à imaginer et construire le Yachting de
demain, avec cette nouvelle génération
de bateaux révolutionnaires, plus
respectueux de l’environnement marin.

Welcome to Monaco!
With the Monaco Solar Boat Challenge,
the Yacht Club de Monaco and its
President HSH the Sovereign Prince
Albert II wish to shine the spotlight
on a tradition of maritime innovation
engrained in the Principality.
We should remember that Prince
Albert 1st, an eminent navigator
nicknamed ‘Prince of the Seas’, was a
pioneer of modern oceanography. He
welcomed with enthusiasm an initiative
by Camille Blanc, President of the SBM
(Société des Bains de Mer) to hold an
International Powerboat Meeting every
spring. From 1904, industrialists from all
over the world descended on Monaco,
alongside royal yachts spending the
winter in Monte-Carlo, to present their
latest developments in combustion
engine technology to an international
clientele.
A century later and the same spirit is to
be found in this competition; only the
energy source has changed.
In collaboration with the UIM (Union
Internationale Motonautique) our aim
today is to encourage universities and
engineering students to conceive and
build the future of yachting with this new
generation of revolutionary boats, more
respectful of the marine environment.

Pour la troisième année consécutive,
le Yacht Club de Monaco accueille le
Monaco Solar Boat Challenge : une
course de racers propulsés par l’énergie
solaire, la seule en Méditerranée.
15 embarcations, de jeunes étudiants
venus de toute l’Europe, un objectif :
montrer l’extraordinaire potentiel de
cette source d’énergie inépuisable.
For the third year in a row the Yacht
Club de Monaco is hosting the
Monaco Solar Boat Challenge, the
only meeting in the Mediterranean for
solar-powered boats.
The 15 boats competing have been
designed by engineering students
from six countries across Europe,
all committed to promoting this
inexhaustible energy source.
