French Brevet and Baccalauréat examination successes
It is with pleasure that I again announce that all of our Year 9 French Stream students passed the Brevet examinations; 80% of
whom did so with “mention”/merit. Congratulations to these students on their hard work and excellent results. You have
continued the Telopea tradition!
Likewise the French Baccalauréat results for our Year 12 lycée students are outstanding. Congratulations to these students and
their teachers. Seven of these students have received results that will put their ATARS (university entrance ranking) in the top
1% of the ACT. We are very proud of them all! A ceremony was held at the French Embassy last Monday evening to award the

Year 9 EFS parents, please keep this date free to celebrate.
Le Petit Journal de Telopea
We now have a group of Year 10 students as promising journalists in the school. This year they have interviewed several
important guests both at the school and other venues, including the Prime Minister of France at the French Embassy. Due to
their successes, they were asked to cover the celebrations at the Australian War Memorial for the 14th July, Bastille Day. This
was a huge honour for these students and for the school. Our new ACT Director General of Education, Ms Natalie Howsan, noted
this in a tweet after the event.
Professional Learning for teachers
The school is mindful of the need to keep at the cutting edge of best classroom practice. To this end many teachers attend
external professional learning workshops throughout the year as well as within the school. This term, Dr Emmanuel Bernet will
visit the school in week 2. He will deliver workshops to both French and Australian teachers on contemporary pedagogy and the
best use of IT in the classroom.
School uniform
Thank you for ensuring that your children are dressed according to the school’s dress code.
At this time of year, as the cold weather continues, I ask that all accessories (hats, tights, scarves, etc) are in the colours of the
school – navy and red.
Contributions from French Stream families – update
French Stream families will again receive a letter requesting French Curriculum contributions. If you are a family who has already
contributed, we thank you for this. Other families will have the opportunity to contribute now. It is certainly not too late as we
are sourcing an additional French teacher for the primary sector to support teacher absences and provide additional early French
literacy during semester 2.
Library upgrade during the holidays
The Primary Library has had a facelift! New carpet has been laid during the holidays with bright new chairs. Of course we are
constantly updating the books as well.
For your information also, the Primary Librarian will be absent for the first seven weeks of term. She is having a well-earnt break
on long service leave. We wish her happy holidays.
Australian Business Week (ABW)
Congratulations to all year 10 students who participated in ABW in week 10 last term. The students formed companies to run a
hospitality facility from all aspects of its operation. It was a steep learning curve for them all but the final results from the
company reports, oral presentations, advertising videos to the Trade Fair on the last day of term, were exemplary. A week not to
be forgotten! Thank you to Hollie Aerts who led the week.
Personal Projects
Congratulations to students in Year 10 who show-cased their Personal Projects to the community this week as part of their IB
requirements. The journey started in Year 9 last year and continued into Term 2 this year. The quality of the projects was
excellent and a credit to the students who participated. Thank you to Ms Megan Taylor, the Personal Project Coordinator, for her
hard work throughout the year in preparing the students and the teachers for this journey. Some of these projects will now be
sent off-shore for moderation with the IB. This ensures that the school is assessing at the correct levels.
School reports
End of semester 1 reports were sent home with your children in week 10 last term. If you did not receive your child’s report,
please contact the school office for another copy.
ManageBac
At the end of last term parents of students in secondary were sent their access to ManageBac. This was emailed on 28 June to all
parents who provided their email details. This now enables parents to see how their child is progressing, what homework and
assignments have been set and to connect with teachers. This is another way we are endeavouring to improve communication in
the school. Students have had this access since last year. Please check that you received this email from ManageBac. If not,
please email your request to: [email protected]
Road Safety
As we start the new term I ask that you take care when driving, dropping off and collecting your children near the school. This is
an on-going request from me as the safety of your children is important to us all.
School Hours
There is supervision at the school for half an hour before and after classes.
School times are:
Primary - 9am to 3.15pm
Secondary - 8.45am to 3.15pm (3.09pm on Thursdays)
Please ensure that your children do not arrive before supervision starts for the day and leave the school promptly after classes
are finished.
Best wishes for a happy and rewarding term. I look forward to working with you to support your children to learn in a happy,
safe and caring environment.
Warm regards

souhaitons d’excellentes vacances.
Australian Business Week (ABW)
Bien cordialement,
Kerrie Blain

SECONDARY NEWS
BAND NEWS
Late last term the jazz band performed to great acclaim at our favourite venue, the Alliance Francaise for the 2016 edition of
Fete de la Musique. They even received a first-ever encore! No wonder we love playing there.
We also launched our fundraising efforts by raising $90.35 for the Pozieres School which we plan on visiting next year – why are
we raising money for this school? Aha. You will have to wait until the next issue of TT, this is a long and very fascinating story
unfolding …
We also raised a colossal $2,356.20 at the election day BBQ – thanks very much to all the parents, staff and students who gave
up a lot of time on the first Saturday of school holidays!
The senior bands are now rehearsing in the secondary hall – this new venue involves the 8-10 Wind ensemble and Jazz Band.
The year 7 bands now rehearse together on Thursdays at 8am and again during enrichment in term three in the band room. At
last, the French and Australian steam bands get to work together in the same room at the same time. Vive la rehearsal!
Band uniform shirts are still being pre-ordered at the front office – the fee code for a shirt is: 8288-000-00. This shirt will have
Sydney 2016 printed on it (to complement Uluru 2015 and France/Belgium 2014 – collect the whole set!) Deadline for prepayments is Friday 24 June.

busy 10 weeks.
Welcome to New Staff
This week we welcomed eight new staff to the primary section. Early notification was provided last term to the parents of the
students impacted by a change of teacher. The early appointment of staff has made it possible for a smoother transition as well
as the sharing of information in relation to student needs and progress. An Orientation Program operated on Monday and
Tuesday before the staff had an opportunity to meet their new students on Wednesday. Our new staff are:
Gwenaelle Peyret (K3)
Toni Brammall (K4, 1.2 & 1.3-English and Early Intervention in Kindergarten)

Severine Bernard (2.2)
Severine Navaux (2.3)
Ingrid Aubert (3.3 & 4.3)
Olivia Singier (5.1 and 5.2)
Christophe Navaux (Year 6 Mathematics)
At the time of writing, Ingrid Aubert and Severine Bernard were still waiting on their visas but we hope they will be with us for
the start of week two. Teacher Librarian, Maura Dand is currently on Long Service Leave and is being replaced by Sandy Bauerle
(Monday through Wednesday) and Heather Richarson (Thursday and Friday).

ARTS News
Final payment for the year 1, 2 and 4 excursion to the Canberra Theatre to see Circa Carnival of the Animals is due by 02
August. In line with our new approach, only online payments can be accepted. Any seats not required by students in years 1, 2
and 4 will then be offered to students in year 6 not attending the excursion to Noumea.
Our focus on the visual and performing arts continues this term. The Wakakirri Dance group will perform on 03 August and are
hoping to build on last year’s success which saw the group win the Sustainability award for the ACT. Cathy Marot is busy refining
the choreography and a team of helpers are making costumes and props.
The choir, under the expert direction of Susan Cribb and Cathy Marot has received a number of invitations to perform publically.
Their first engagement will be on 23 August as a solo choir at Limelight, The ACT Education Directorate’s celebration of the
performing and visual arts. They also have been invited to perform at the National Gallery and at Lycée Condorcet in Sydney.
Sport
Last term, a number of students competed at the zone level in cross country. Maria Magdic reported on their success in an
earlier edition of Telopea Topics. Late last term, we learnt of James Mitchum’s (year 4) success in swimming. He has been
selected to represent the ACT in Darwin in August. James has qualified to compete in five events. We wish him well. At the final
assembly in term 2, the students and staff warmly acknowledged his demonstration of commitment to, and excellence in
swimming.
Congratulations to Coen Storer (year 3) who also qualified in the Under 10 age group to complete in Darwin. Being only 8 years
old however, he is not permitted to compete as part of the ACT Squad.
This term, 44 students will represent Telopea Park School at the Zone Athletics Carnival on 18 August.

please set aside 15 minutes to complete it when it hits your inbox.
Year 6 Excursion
On 13 September, 29 year 6 students and four teachers will depart for Noumea. A note was sent home late last term notifying
parents of a meeting in week 2. The students are busy learning about the natural environment of Noumea as well as completing
a unit of work to share with their Noumean peers.
Again, your assistance is appreciated in ensuring that students wear the school colour code and do not bring toys and other
valuables to school. Staff cannot be responsible for items that are broken or go missing during the school day.

Notre enseignante-bibliothécaire, Maura Dand est actuellement en Long
Service Leave.

Uniform Shop Second-Hand Items
Did you know that the TPS Uniform Shop also sells a range of second-hand uniforms for a bargain price of $5 a piece?
Parents can also donate pre-loved uniforms to be sold second-hand at the shop.
All money from the sales of these items is given back to the P&C.
Please pop in and visit the Uniform Shop front (located next to the Canteen) during the following opening hours:
The fete this year is on Saturday 5th November so, Save the Date!
Hold off on all those donations yet but get those volunteer vibes kick started.
We still have a few stalls needing co-ordinators due to some fabulously dedicated
parents who have left the school and we would LOVE some new parents to join us.
If you are able to help out in any way we would love you to come to our next fete meeting so, send us
an email at [email protected] and we will be sure to add you to the
list of friendly and enthusiastic volunteers.
Remember the fete is the major fundraiser for our school so,
let’s make 2016 a fantastic fete for all of our children.
