STEP FORWARD It has been a busy, tumultuous year for the 2016 graduating class of Graphic Design, including a winter that seems not to want to give way to spring. But spring will step forward, as she always does, leading us into sunnier weather and new challenges. And so too will this graduating class step forward, first into vernissage, marking the culmination of your time at Dawson, and then to many adventures beyond. To the students who have worked so diligently, I offer my congratulations; you have earned the accolades that come your way. As you stop to think about what you have done and the work you have put in, I hope that you will consider taking time for a well-deserved break. To the teachers, I say thank you; your hard work and care have paved the way for the students’ success. These wonderful moments at the end of each academic year bring with them much energy and inspiration. I wish you all the best of luck as you step forward into the future, knowing that you have been exceptionally well-prepared for whatever awaits you. If I could offer one piece of advice, it would be to take seriously the theme you have chosen for this vernissage. Step forward can mean so many things…to move to a new phase of your life, or to take a new path. To step forward can also bring with it the very worthy idea of leadership and service: step forward, while thinking always of what your actions can do for others. As Alan Alda reminds us, “You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your intuition. You can’t get there by bus, only by hard work and risk and by not quite knowing what you’re doing, but what you’ll discover will be wonderful. What you discover will be yourself.” Step forward. You are about to meet your bright and wonderful self on the path to your future. Adrea C. Cole Dean, Creative and Applied Arts Three important steps in three years... “It’s a long way to the top (if you wanna rock ’n’ roll)” as the AC/DC song says. Our graduates rock ’n’ roll, and the market is now their new place to do it. They applied effort, engagement, determination, passion and energy in a step-by-step process, learning how to move up and ahead. This exhibition shows their achievement: a collection of work that represents their talent and their skills. On behalf of all the Graphic Design faculty, I wish them all the best in their future professional careers.
