Code diversion, creative irony and ostentatious provocation: Yvan Arpa is once again
exploring forbidden territory. After lightning, rust and dust, all classic enemies of
watchmaking, he is displaying the yellow and black colours seared into the collective
consciousness as symbolising danger and embodying a warning signal.
Nuclear technology, an explosive subject with strong negative connotations, is looking for
enthusiasts, connoisseurs or initiates prepared to make light of threats and advocating
atomic energy as epitomising the very essence of matter.
The toxic skull atomic symbol and emergency exit signs appear on a black and yellow dial
framed by a bezel with a striped pattern composed of either alternating matt or polished
black finishes or of alternating colours, according to the Crime Scene, Radioactive and
Atomic Central models.
The figurative elements on the watch, such as the warning triangle, the skull or the atomic
propeller blade serve an aesthetic role as well as conveying a cleverly diverted symbolism.
According to Yvan Arpa, “the use of irony via diverted codes is typical of contemporary art
and in certain offbeat circles, but never shows up in watchmaking.”
VOLNATOMIC appeals to natural “transgressors”, drawing them into dangerous and
forbidden zones in order to escape from a day-to-day, conventional and well-defined
universe.

collection explosive où l'horlogerie traditionnelle suisse, mouvement automatique, Grande
Date Dubois Dépraz et tourbillon Concepto, joue avec l'interdit et le danger nucléaire et
s'approprie ainsi la signalétique jaune et noire.
Attention danger, âmes sensibles s’abstenir !
Détournement des codes, ironie créative et provocation ostentatoire, Yvan Arpa explore une
fois de plus les territoires interdits. Après la foudre, la rouille et la poussière, ennemies de
l’horlogerie, il affiche les couleurs jaunes et noires fortes dans l’inconscient collectif comme
symboles du danger et synonymes d’avertissement.
Le nucléaire, sujet explosif à forte connotation négative, recherche adeptes, amateurs ou
initiés faisant fi de ces menaces et consacrant l’énergie atomique à l’essence même de la
matière.
Symbole atomique, tête de mort toxique, et signalétique des issues de secours s’affichent
sur un cadran noir et jaune habillé d’une lunette dont les rayures apparaissent, soit par
l’alternance des finitions noires, mates ou polies, soit par l’alternance des couleurs, selon les
modèles Crime Scene, Radioactive ou Atomic Central.
Les éléments figuratifs de la montre tels que, le triangle d’avertissement, la tête de mort ou
l’hélice atomique ont ici une vocation esthétique doublée d’une symbolique détournée.
Selon Yvan Arpa « l’ironie par le détournement des codes est un procédé exploité dans l’art
contemporain et dans certains milieux décalés, mais jamais en Horlogerie. »
VOLNATOMIC interpelle les transgresseurs et les attirent dans des sphères dangereuses et
interdites afin de s’extraire du monde commun, convenu et balisé.
