Introduction
The opening of the National Museum of European and Mediterranean
Civilizations (MCEM) in Marseille, planned for 2008, offers an opportunity
for rethinking the relationship between ethnological research and the museum
as an institution which communicates that research to a general public. Since
2001, a series of seminars, organized in conjunction with the Institute of
Mediterranean and Comparative Ethnology (IDEMEC) in Aix-en-Provence,
has stimulated an ambitious work-in-progress of reflection on comparative
research on a European and Mediterranean scale.
In this perspective, the two principle associations of ethnologists working on
this geographic area, the Société Internationale d’Ethnologie et de Folklore
(SIEF) and the Association d’Anthropologie Méditerranéenne (ADAM),
decided for the first time to hold a common symposium in Marseille. In a
Europe and a Mediterranean undergoing radical change, the various national
ethnological traditions have the opportunity to examine new problematics.
In the 21st century, we all live " among Others ". Society is experienced as
culturally heterogeneous, be this in metropolitan centers attracting labor
migrants from around the world, or in isolated mountain hamlets visited by
tourists and embraced in the global reach of mass media and virtuality. Places,
objects, and the cultural practices we devise to experience their ownership are
all engulfed in reflection and negotiation vis-à-vis historic and present cultural
Others. The congress seeks to make this experience graspable, laying open sites
of conflict as well as processes of encounter. A series of subthemes have been
generated, whereby an effort has been made to bring together traditional topics
from within the canon of ethnological research and areas of research that
interdisciplinary collaborations have brought forth.

Introduction
L'installation prévue en 2008 à Marseille du musée national des Civilisations de
l'Europe et de la Méditerranée (MCEM) est l'occasion de repenser les relations entre la
recherche ethnologique et le musée comme institution de communication de la
recherche vers le grand public. Dés 2001, une série de séminaires, organisés
conjointement avec l'Institut d'Ethnologie méditerranéenne et comparative (IDEMEC)
à Aix-en-Provence, a permis de mettre en place un vaste chantier de réflexion de
recherches comparatives à l'échelle de l'Europe et de la Méditerranée.
C’est dans cette perspective que les deux principales associations d’ethnologues
travaillant sur cette aire géographique, la Société Internationale d’Ethnologie et de
Folklore (SIEF), et l’Association d’Anthropologie Méditerranéenne (ADAM), ont décidé
de tenir pour la première fois un colloque commun à Marseille.
Dans une Europe et une Méditerranée en radicale mutation, l'occasion est donnée aux
différentes traditions ethnologiques nationales d'interroger de nouvelles
problématiques.
Au XXIe siècle nous vivons tous “entre autres”. La société est ressentie comme
culturellement hétérogène, depuis les grands centres métropolitains attirant les
travailleurs migrants du monde entier aux villages de montagne isolés mais néanmoins
visités par les touristes et touchés par l'impact des mass média et de la réalité virtuelle.
Les lieux, les objets et les pratiques culturelles que nous étudions pour identifier leurs
propriétés sont tous impliqués dans une profonde remise en cause de l'histoire et du
présent des cultures autres.
Ce colloque vise à rendre cette expérience tangible en mettant en évidence aussi bien les
conflits que les processus de rencontre. Une série de sous-thèmes a été choisie, pour
rassembler à la fois des sujets classiques de la recherche ethnologique et ceux des
nouveaux champs de prospection que les collaborations interdisciplinaires ont fait
naître.
