Hemel likes to play around with men,

situation soon gets out of control.

considerable financial difficulties when its rent was increased. The
authorities got involved and the Star’s viewers contributed towards
saving their cinema, underlining how important it is for a city and
its inhabitants to have a cinema close at hand. Apart from previews,
festivals and cycles of heritage films, Stéphane Libs has organized
evening meetings between the cinema’s team and the public to discuss
programming as well as questions regarding the management of an
independent cinema in the heart of town.
Established in 1984 and member of the Europa Cinemas network
since 1995, the Star had over 150,000 admissions in 2011 in its five
theatres, which have recently been equipped with digital projectors.
This year the team receives the Best Programming Award for the
diversity of films screened: over 40 nationalities were represented,
while three quarters of screenings were dedicated to European films.
As Stéphane Libs, director of the Star and the Star Saint-Exupéry
explains: “The Star’s vocation is to promote auteur films, innovative
works and European films, and to help discover what foreign film
traditions have to offer.”
This commitment is reflected by the cinema’s many activities, notably
for Young Audiences, with events like Animastar, a festival of animated
films, and the Festival VO Cultures Originales which aims to give
secondary school pupils a taste for films in the original version.
2012 has seen no shortage of emotion. This spring the cinema faced

de promouvoir les films d’auteur, les œuvres novatrices, les cinématographies
européennes et la découverte des cinémas étrangers. »
Ces engagements se retrouvent dans l’active politique d’animation de
la salle, notamment en direction du jeune public avec des événements
comme Animastar, festival de cinéma d’animation, ou Festival VO
Cultures Originales destiné à faire découvrir le plaisir de la version
originale aux élèves du secondaire.
2012 est une année riche en émotions. En effet, au printemps
dernier, le cinéma a dû affronter de lourds problèmes financiers suite
à l’augmentation de son loyer. Les pouvoirs publics se sont mobilisés
et les spectateurs du Star cotisés pour sauver leur cinéma démontrant
l’importance pour une ville et ses habitants d’une salle de proximité.
Outre les avant-premières, les festivals et les cycles patrimoniaux,
Stéphane Libs a mis en place des soirées rencontres de l’équipe du
cinéma avec le public pour discuter de la programmation mais aussi
des questions relatives à la gestion d’un cinéma indépendant de
centre-ville.

education and openness to other cultures. But Kitanov’s desire to share
films with ever larger audiences soon took him beyond Sofia. In the
same year he launched the Sofia Film Fest at the Coast – screening
the best of the SIFF in the coastal cities of Burgas and Varna – and
the Sofia Film Fest on the Road. Also going by the name “Operation
Kino”, this project is supported by MEDIA Mundus. The fruit of a
cooperation between the Sofia, Sarajevo, Cluj and Istanbul festivals,
the project seeks to widen the dissemination of European films across
Southeast Europe via the Europa Cinemas network.

Stefan Kitanov, Dom na Kinoto – Sofia (Bulgaria)
The award for Best Entrepreneur of 2012 pays tribute to the
commitment of Stefan Kitanov, who for the past 20 years has tirelessly
championed the dissemination of European cinema in Bulgaria.
Programmer at Dom na Kinoto starting in 1992, he became its
director and brought the cinema into the network in 1995. In 2001
he established the company Art Fest, focussing on distribution,
production and festival organisation, before returning to head the
cinema in 2003. Today Art Fest’s catalogue boasts internationally
renowned European films, and the cinema has seen its audiences
double in less than ten years.
Foreign acclaim came to Dom na Kinoto with the launch in 2001 of
the Sofia International Film Festival. Recognised by the FIAPF, this
festival presents first and second films. In 2009, to ensure that these
films are seen by the greatest number of viewers, the SIFF expanded
to form the Sofia Film Fest for Students, giving younger ones free and

ce festival présente des premiers ou deuxièmes films. En 2009, pour
que ces films soient vus par le plus grand nombre, le SIFF se décline
en Sofia Film Fest for Students proposant aux jeunes un accès libre et
illimité aux films. C’est un engagement fort d’éducation à l’image et
d’ouverture aux autres cultures. Mais la volonté de partage de Kitanov
ne pouvait se limiter aux murs de Sofia : il lance donc la même année
le Sofia Film Fest at the Coast – réédition du meilleur du SIFF dans
les villes côtières de Burgas et Varna – et le Sofia Film Fest on the
Road. Répondant également au nom « Operation Kino », ce projet
soutenu par MEDIA Mundus est le fruit d’une coopération entre les
festivals de Sofia, Sarajevo, Cluj et Istanbul pour la circulation des
films européens en Europe du Sud-Est via le réseau Europa Cinemas.

Finally, Iris Präfke underlines her commitment to showing children
films in the original version by providing a selection of works in
English, French and Spanish. Last year, the initiative Classroom at
the cinema was launched: the films are presented by an Anglophone
moderator who discusses them with the children. In 2011, only half
of the films programmed at Moviemento were in German. A tour de
force in bringing cinema to Young Audiences.
Wulf Sörgel and Iris Präfke, the exhibitors at Moviemento – a historic
cinema in Berlin’s Kreuzberg district – took over management of the
cinema in 2007 and focussed their programming in one direction:
Young Audiences. Over the years their activities became increasingly
diverse and the policy bore fruit: admissions for screenings dedicated
to Young Audiences continue to rise (+30% in 2011). Another sign of
their success: the special programmes that have been set up – whether
school screenings or activities for the youngest viewers – now reach all
of Berlin via two partner cinemas, Kant Kino and Central Kino.
Destined for schools, Schulkino Berlin is a catalogue of 70 films put
together each year by the exhibitors at Moviemento. The films are
classed by age category, and each screening is accompanied by specific
pedagogical material. For children aged 3 to 5, Spatzenkino proposes
programmes of short films with regular breaks, led by a specialised
educator. And with Kinderkino Berlin, screenings take place several

Destiné aux écoles, Schulkino Berlin est un catalogue de 70 films, conçu
chaque année par les exploitants du Moviemento. Les films sont classés
par catégorie d’âge et ont un accompagnement pédagogique spécifique
pour chaque séance. Pour les enfants de 3 à 5 ans, Spatzenkino propose
des programmes de films courts, avec des pauses régulières, encadrés par
un éducateur spécialisé. Dans le cadre de Kinderkino Berlin, des séances
ont lieu plusieurs fois par semaine et le week-end pour les enfants avec
leurs parents, selon un calendrier distribué dans toute la ville.
Enfin, Iris Präfke souligne son attachement à montrer aux enfants des
films en langue étrangère et dispose d’une sélection en anglais, en
français et en espagnol. L’année dernière, l’initiative Classroom at the
cinema a été lancée : les films sont présentés puis débattus par une
personne anglophone. En 2011, seule la moitié des films programmés
au Moviemento étaient allemands. Un tour de force dans le domaine
du jeune public.
