Full stop to intention notes
«There is no need for subject. Life doesn’t know subjects, in life everything is mixed
together, the profound and the insignificant, the sublime and the ridiculous»
A. Chekhov
Let’s be honest, having a standpoint on Chekhov’s plays is difficult and may be
even ridiculous. Chekhov obviously doesn’t develop a guideline of thoughts in his
plays.
The plays are more an observation of life and people. Each character develops his
own system of thought. We should not only stop to one single standpoint.
Although there is something that permeates through all of Ivanov‘s characters: a
conscious or unconscious desire and will to free and extirpate themselves from
their physical, geographical and social imprisonment.
Marguerite Duras said that it was the act of writing that taught her what she was
writing. One should know what he looks for when expressing it. Defining what one
is going to do is admitting that one «is not going to learn anything from what is to be
done ». It is dead art. When directing, I watch the world freed from my (our)
preconceived images of this world.
I will here try to express what I look for and which has to do with theatre and
therefore to show the beauty of life. Chekhov is a witness of life and I would like the
production to be a testimony and an ode to life.

Ivanov, I am to be created
Ivanov,
the story of a man who does no longer recognize his life, and who decides
passively and unconsciously to change it, to transform it. Ivanov is a man in a state
of mutation.
Ivanov says:
I am to be created and I am going through that experience.
Ivanov,
or the necessary violence to free oneself from an unsatisfactory life, a life where
one does no longer recognize oneself.
How is it possible to avoid becoming the ghost of our own existence when life… is
ahead?
Why doesn’t his life correspond to him anymore?
Where does the violence he turned against him come from?
Why is he not understood by other people?
How to remain in life? How to be alive?
The question that Ivanov deals with is finally fairly simple, how do you not ruin your
life? How to stay alive?
I think the theater may offer us how to develop its own time and timing inside the
general time.
I have always been obsessed with the question of freedom, in all its aspects. It
seems to me that freedom comes from the refusal of accepting to be imprisoning
and the courage of extorting oneself.
There is violence in the solemn act of acquiring freedom, that violence is not so
different from the one of the world surrounding us.
Ivanov is a man with no goal. Not having a single goal opens a lot of possibilities.

A theatrical composition
Working on Ivanov with eight actors implies a necesary adaptation as the play is
composed of fifteen characters. Thus, we have had to stage our own Ivanov.
The actors and I work on the text in order to stress out what closely touches us,
deeply moves us and speaks to us the most
A production based on the echo, what does Chekov’s text echoing on us and
feeding us back.
What appeals to me in this work is not simply the story, but the interpreters and my
own intimate response to it, the intimate journey…. The staging process of Ivanov
[What remains of life…] begins there.
A production made of the many subjectivity of the interpreters, as artists, describing
with their bodies, their voices, their minds, a sensible vision of the piece, of the
world…
In this process, the staging will be a simple gathering of plurality.
Ivanov [What remains of life...] is a theatrical composition is a visual, physical and
sound approach and track.
It is a painting, a dance, a music air, a calligraphy of the soul and the written
expression of beauty.

Going along with Extime Compagnie
Founded in 2004, Extime compagnie at the very beginning gathers former students
of the Ecole regionale d’acteur de Cannes (Actor school of the city of Cannes ERAC).
Extime compagnie combines and joins genuine theatre and energic, though and
rough choregraphy. Extime name is a shortcut for two ideas: timeless and intimacy
revealing. The genuine part of the human being (the intimacy), variations upon time
and duration, the subjectivity of the actor, the superposition and overlapping of the
bodies of the actors and texts in a determined space are one out of many of the
tracks explored by the company.
Extime Compagnie’s shows:

brûler pour briller » - Creation 2008

Press release
Ivanov [What remains of life...]
The stage director Jean Pierre Baro shows a very personal and unusual
interpretation of the drama Ivanov, this character full of disdain and bothered about
life.
He fully makes his own lecture of Tchekhov in this version of Ivanov (what
remains of life) in order to transmit & reveal to us a very strong message. His actor
direction put lights on vanity of the man, completely absorbed by his own fate: In
the middle of the world, in the middle of his own word about the world, soliloquizing
and pulsing words out ad libitum about his own person, prisoner in this position in
the centre of the world from where he sees nothing at all. (…)
Jean-Pierre Baro not only criticises the petty life of a Russian village but also the
open space & so vast landscapes which surrounds it and digs impassable trenches
out. Turbulences, vacuity, black shadows, permanently threaten them following the
rhythm of the Tchekhov writing which is made of a continuity of acts and cuts
without a main guideline. This is this space that JPB shows out by his actor and
stage direction. Few music airs, few chairs, one table, almost nothing concerning
decor and accessories, describes the unequal and uneven relationship between the
Human being and The space around him. The poverty of the human being, the
armless side of the human personality gives to every word a performing life, partly
free of all conventions.
The actress Caroline Breton as Sacha expresses her personal poetry in acting in
performances sourcing them into Magic and legends. As Ivanov, Elios Nöel is an
actor who generally does not play a character into the creation of Helene Weber or
Les Lumières d’août (August Lights). With her Swedish accent and her flamboyant
way of acting, Ruth Vega-Fernandez gives to Sarah this accurate strangeness. As
Lebedev, Philippe Nöel is really a resume of the theatre himself. At last, Simon
Bellouard, Tonin Palazzotto, Franck Gazal, Roxanne Cleyet-Merle add to this list of
actors : They more deeply dig these abysses where characters are precipitated into
and dragged in and then lost their words.

About Extime Compagnie, Press release:
… Jean-Pierre Baro claims for a theatre expression where the text is extracted out
from the bodies to reveal troubles and conflicts more than just a weak and fade
pedagogy of the meaning. The stage direction of Extime Companie takes its roots
in day to day life and then reaches the world of the mythology.
Without taking into account realism, JPB likes to combine tragedy to comedy and
irony, a way to be as much as possible into an empiric manner very near from the
ideal definition of… theatre…
Patrick Sourd. Les Inrockuptibles
… A play with a very strong and deep energy, where the body sometimes replaces
the text itself.
Theatre in action which goes out of any convention with a very large liberty and
freedom and a so personal fantasy which makes us so happy…
