1|Page CFUW Charitable Trust / La Fondation de la FCFDU WHO WE ARE / QUI NOUS SOMMES The CFUW Charitable Trust received a registered charity number in Ontario in 1967 to allow it to receive and administer the funds supporting the CFUW Fellowships and Awards Program. In 1976, with rule changes governing charities, the Trust began to build a reserve fund to provide for future awards. The Trust operates at arms length from CFUW, as mandated by the CRA. Our main goal is to raise funds to support the CFUW Fellowships and Awards Program, while CFUW is responsible for administration and adjudication of the Program. WHAT WE DO / CE QUE NOUS FAISONS The CFUW Charitable Trust assists women university graduate to further their postsecondary education and to enhance their contribution to the future of Canada. The Charitable Trust receives funds from individual members, Clubs, Regional Councils, and corporate donors. It administers an investment portfolio of over 1.4 million dollars, which is managed professionally on our behalf. This year, 16 students have received awards for their studies, and the Creative Arts Award has also been granted. The CFUW Charitable Trust is also very pleased to announce the inaugural CFUW Aboriginal Women's Award. A major donation to the Trust by the Education Council-Wolfville was announced at the 2015 CFUW AGM and this award is funded through that generosity. THE FUTURE / LE FUTUR In 2019, CFUW will celebrate its 100th Anniversary. The 100th Anniversary Scholarship Project has a goal of raising $100,000 for national and local awards, the project in gaining momentum and is well on its way to success with a wide variety of fundraising ideas and plans En 2019, la FCFDU fêtera son 100e anniversaire. 2|Page Message from the Acting Chair Message de la présidente par intérim Susan Murphy CFUW Charitable Trust 2015-2016 La Fondation de la FCFDU This year marks the 40th anniversary of the Trust, providing funding for women in post secondary education, advanced study and research, and helping them to play a strong role in public life and the Canadian economy. We are very grateful to CFUW Regional Councils, Clubs and members for your continuing generosity to the Trust and your enthusiasm for the 100th Anniversary Scholarship Project. Key Trust activities include the first competition for the CFUW Aboriginal Women's Award, funded by a major donation to the Trust by the Education Council-Wolfville; the launch of the Trust's new logo and public website,www.cfuwcharitabletrust.ca; and publication of our new brochure outlining the many ways you can help the Trust - through tribute and legacy gifts, fundraising activities and events, donations directly to the Trust or CanadaHelps.org, and now also by converting Air Miles into donations through www.airmiles.ca. I extend my thanks for their ongoing commitment to the Trustees; bookkeeper Lynn Franklin; CFUW Fellowships Committee; Investment Advisor Andrew Posthumous; CFUW Fellowships Manager, Betty Dunlop and Executive Director, Robin Jackson; and to CFUW member Beverley Boudreau who generously donated her time and expertise to our new logo and brochure. 3|Page Winners for 2016-2017 Les boursières pour l’année the Academic universitaire Year CFUW Aboriginal Women’s Award (AWA) $13,500 Inaugural Recipient Brittany Chubbs Brittany Chubbs is currently completing a Masters of Health Ethics and is enrolled in the first year of Medical School at the Memorial University of Newfoundland. “Let me reassure you that you have Her research to date has focused largely made a wise investment in me. The minor decline of the investment account was a result of the poor performance of the Canadian equity markets as well as the Canadian preferred share market. As the Charitable Trust investment policy prevents us from having a sizable portion in non-Canadian entities, we were not able to avoid the downturn. Over all our investments are doing well thanks to the guidance of Andrew Posthumus of HollisWealth. The portfolio is well positioned regarding debt instruments (preferred shares, money markets and cash) and we own high quality, dividendproducing equities. We welcome inquiries regarding the details of our holdings Clubs have continued to remember the Trust with generous donations and many individuals have done so as well. Clubs and individuals continue to support the École Polytechnique award with events around December 6 th. Clubs and Councils use various methods to raise funds for the Trust including, dinners, raffles, book sales, silent auctions, card parties. We are grateful for the time and effort that is represented by these events. Particular kudos to those responsible for the very successful boutique held at the Quebec City AGM. Last year at the AGM the Charitable Trust Breakfast became the Charitable Trust Lunch and this will be continued. We are looking forward to meeting our long-time supporters and some new comers this year. A summary Report of our financial situation is found on page 7 and the complete financial Statements can be found on the new Charitable Trust website www.cfuwcharitabletrust.ca Our much appreciated donors are listed on page 10. If your Club is not there, perhaps it could be next year! Votre club pourrait en faire partie l’an prochain! 6|Page SUMMARY OF FINANCIAL RESULTS 2015 – 2016 Trustees of the CFUW Charitable Trust Revenue Donations and fundraising Realized gain (loss) Unrealized gain (loss) Investment income Gain on foreign exchange $79,019 <8,078> <121,359> 61,130 11,098 Susan Murphy, Acting Chair CFUW Nanaimo, Past President CFUW Ann McElhinney, Treasurer 21,810 Expenses Administered awards CFUW awards CFUW fellowships Grant - creative arts Event costs Investment management fees Office and general Professional fees CFUW Etobicoke 5,500 48,000 31,000 4,000 4,168 13,589 11,266 4,838 Joanne Jamieson, Assistant Treasurer CFUW Etobicoke Carol Hare CFUW Mississauga, Promotions Kathryn Wilkinson CFUW Mississauga, VP Education CFUW Excess of Revenue over Expenses Unrestricted Net Assets beginning of year Internally Restricted Net Assets Unrestricted Net Assets, end of year 122,361 <100,551> Doris Mae Oulton UWC Winnipeg, President CFUW 1,636,656 <4,000> $1,532,105 * Fiorenza Albert-Howard Chair UWC Vancouver; to September 2015 * Full financial report available on website www.cfuwcharitabletrust.ca CFUW Creative Arts Award Winner 2015-2016 $4,000 The Community Music School of Waterloo Region This award is given on a biannual basis with the CFUW Library Award given in the second year. The organization offers opportunities to youth in their community who face socioeconomic barriers to making music. Their programs provide access to music, instruction, and performance opportunities for children as young as five up to high school students. Except for one paid staff, it is entirely volunteer run. Since the start in 2012, the program has expanded every year. 7|Page PHOTO left to right: Caroline Hissa (CMSWR); Helen Sami, CFUW Library and Creative Arts Committee; and Kari Kokko (CMSWR) 2015-2016 Events Highlights UWC Vancouver 12th Annual Commemorative and Fund Raising event at Hycroft, Dec 2, 2015, raised nearly $1,000 in donations for the Trust. This exciting campaign will be introduced at the AGM in St. Catharines and will run until the 2017 AGM in Richmond.
