des penseurs et des bâtisseurs de la métropole qui
partageront leurs points de vue sur des thèmes urbains,
concrets et actuels, des sujets qui touchent les Montréalais.
Les conférences seront présentées par Suzanne Sauvage,
présidente et chef de la direction du Musée McCord,
et animées par Dinu Bumbaru, directeur des politiques
à Héritage Montréal.
For its 4th edition, City Talks will bring together city thinkers
and builders to share their views on current practical urban
issues affecting Montrealers. Each lecture is introduced
by Suzanne Sauvage, President and Chief Executive Officer
of the McCord Museum, and moderated by Dinu Bumbaru,
Policy Director of Heritage Montreal.

L’AFFICHAGE DANS LE PAYSAGE URBAIN :
DÉFI CRÉATIF OU TOLÉRANCE ZÉRO ?
Issus de tracés remontant aux 17e et 18e siècles, les grands axes charpentent
le territoire montréalais, son aménagement et son transport. Notre-Dame,
Sherbrooke, Saint-Laurent, Sainte-Catherine : ces chemins, qui reliaient
autrefois des villages, sont aujourd’hui traités par segments. Ces grands
axes profitent-ils d’une vue d’ensemble ? Comment les intervenants
et les décideurs peuvent-ils se concerter autour d’une vision cohérente ?
Au 19e siècle, l’affichage devient emblématique de la vitalité des métropoles.
À présent, la sensibilité collective pour le patrimoine bâti et le paysage urbain
soulève de nouveaux enjeux. Si plusieurs enseignes font partie intégrante du
paysage identitaire montréalais, certaines pratiques publicitaires engendrent
sans conteste de la pollution visuelle. Paysage et affichage sont-ils réconciliables ?

In the 19th century, billboards gradually became symbols of a city’s dynamism.
Today, our collective awareness of built heritage and the urban landscape is
giving rise to new issues. While some outdoor advertising icons are integral
to the Montreal identity, certain practices are clear contributors to visual
pollution. Can billboard and landscape truly coexist in harmony?
Emerging from the pathways and trails of the 17th and 18th centuries,
the major roads that criss-cross Greater Montreal have defined the city’s
development and transport. Notre-Dame, Sherbrooke, Saint-Laurent,
Sainte-Catherine: the thoroughfares that once linked villages have today
become segmented. Are these main streets approached from a big picture
perspective? Is there a way for the region’s decision-makers to rally around
a common vision?

L’AGRICULTURE URBAINE : INNOVATION
NÉCESSAIRE OU PHÉNOMÈNE DE MODE ?
Riches de leur diversité sociale, certains quartiers montréalais ont
connu un embourgeoisement récent favorisant la revitalisation du bâti
et des espaces civiques, qui s’accompagne parfois de tensions entre
la population initiale et les nouveaux résidents. La transformation du tissu
social d’un quartier dans le respect de ses résidents est-elle possible,
et à quelles conditions ?
La culture des fruits et des légumes en ville n’est pas un phénomène récent.
Toutefois, la multiplication d’initiatives citoyennes et de projets d’un nouvel
entrepreneuriat a redonné son droit de cité à l’agriculture urbaine. Quelle
place occupe cette transformation dans l’identité et l’urbanité actuelles
et futures des quartiers et de la région métropolitaine ?
MONTREAL NEIGHBOURHOODS:
AN OPPORTUNITY FOR SOCIAL DIVERSITY?
Rich in social diversity, certain Montreal neighbourhoods have recently
undergone a gentrification that aims to revitalize buildings and public spaces
but that has also created tension among long-standing and new residents.
Is it possible to change the social fabric of a district in a way that respects
all of its residents, and if so, under what conditions?
